I grew up in an affluent household. However, my parents cared for us but were fairly strict. Homework and chores were not negotiable. We received a small weekly allowance. None of us ended up in court. We were not offered alcohol until we were over 18 and only on special occasions. My first car was old but ran perfectly. Ethan's parents are the reason he grew up so entitled. I can't help but feel that they bought his freedom.

Ethan was a student where I taught. He wasn't my student, but I had the student who became paralyzed. My sister is very wealthy. People sometimes ask if I'm jealous of her. Not in the slightest. One of their children died from a drug overdose and my nieces are suicidal. I've known plenty of happy well-adjusted rich people, and I've known plenty of drug-addicted suicidal poor people. I don't mean to imply causation. It's just that I know money really doesn't buy happiness, so there's no reason for me to be jealous of it.
Ted Kennedy was blackout drunk at a party, as a married man, hanging out with young women, and he "accidentally" made a wrong turn to a beach, where (I think we can guess what he was going to do with her). Then he ran from the accident scene, had accomplices try to help him escape the area, and it took him 8 hours to report the accident. Can you imagine if he was a poor or middle class teenager? He would spend probably years if not a decade in prison, and would never be able to get a good job or live a normal life. Ted Kennedy, on the other hand, was a privileged man, so he gets 3 months of informal probation. He would never be able to get a good job after that.. just kidding, he spent over 30 years as a US senator. Ethan Couch is the same way. He thought he was invincible, too rich for anything to apply to him. He was never sorry for what happened. The only thing he regretted was not being able to party some more. Ted Kennedy and Ethan Couch both had affluenza. They believe they're so rich that they can never face punishment. Sadly, it's not a belief, it's reality

I think the clinician used the term like you say to give a name to this idea that he didn't understand the consequences of his actions, and I think understanding the consequences of actions is a condition for legal culpability, so if the clinician could convince the court of that it makes some sense why they thought they have to give him a sentence reflecting that mental state or capacity.

I live in Tarrant County, Texas and this case garnered much less attention here than it did around the country. (I have friends/family in other states who were asking me about it.) The press here may make a minor mention of their court dates, but other than that, nothing. I would be interested to see Dr. Grande do an analysis of Tonya Couch. While both parents appeared to contribute to this situation, hers seemed more "invested" in helping him to avoid the consequences (ie: fleeing to Mexico). The fact that she had her nursing license revoked speaks a lot. I'd be very curious as to WHY her license was revoked (being a nurse myself).

Their parents mainly have serious involvement with the current government. They are mainly children born and raised in families with enormous, sudden and easy, unhealthy wealth and a hand in politics. There was one incident that a woman from a really wealthy political family said “I couldn’t find a good high school for my son, therefore I opened one”. This comment being said on tv created a lot of anger for people. A while ago an extremist, related to Iranian politics and clergy, commented: "Our kids' access to money and expensive cars and luxury and countless trips around the world is because of “great genes” and has nothing to do with their parents being wealthy or politician. " He was aiming at people who criticized “Aghazaadeh-ha" for getting into a high political position without any education or experience.

I live in the DFW area. This was such a horrible case in all aspects and a travesty of justice. I see the young man who was paralyzed in the accident often and he and his family have to live with the consequences of Ethan’s actions everyday. Ethan really hasn’t had any consequences to speak of. The parents were too busy being rich and not taking responsibilities for their own actions to actually parent and take care of their child. He was allowed to live in a house, by himself, without any adult supervision as a young teen. In my opinion, they all should have been sent to jail.

I grew up in an affluent household. However, my parents cared for us but were fairly strict. Homework and chores were not negotiable. We received a small weekly allowance. None of us ended up in court. We were not offered alcohol until we were over 18 and only on special occasions. My first car was old but ran perfectly. Ethan's parents are the reason he grew up so entitled. I can't help but feel that they bought his freedom.

Luckily humans evolved to not like being submissive but because men didn't evolve to submissively take care of a baby, they do poorer in capitalism. Our school system is designed to separate the submissive from those who have a spirit that refuses to be dominated. If you submissively do all the pointless homework, then you are given good grades and your elevation in the pecking order of the capitalist rat race tribe is increased. If you can see the homework is stupid and refuse to do it, you are discarded like a piece of trash and driven to the bottom of society. Don't forget that the police massively crack down on homeless people because you need to experience the most extreme cortisol possible if you try to get outside of capitalism, as if being homeless wasn't enough of a consequence to force you into wage slavery.
Evil/domination/antisocial people only understand power and via cultural hegemony they have managed to give most people some level of antisocial personality disorder. Social people need to think in tribal instincts to survive, being a member of the tribe and increasing their rank in the tribe are the most important things to them.
Our world is designed like a baboon tribe with each monkey having a defined position in hierarchy 1-10 or however many, with each monkey's position being determined by wealth. I think the clinician used the term like you say to give a name to this idea that he didn't understand the consequences of his actions, and I think understanding the consequences of actions is a condition for legal culpability, so if the clinician could convince the court of that it makes some sense why they thought they have to give him a sentence reflecting that mental state or capacity.

Green money buys you the same high power attorneys and favor. O.J. Simpson is a perfect example of this. A black man and a dead wealthy white woman and man with no conviction? Yeah... you can see what the determining factor is. Of course in the United States there are more Caucasian people and so more wealthy white people so it's going to appear to be more prevalent. Bottom line is poor people do not get equal representation under the law and do not have access to competent legal council. Statistically those who get the best treatment ( lightest sentences ) despite any other attributing factors are the wealthy and women.

We must get radical when we see a case like this. The members of the judiciary that buy a garbage defense like this - they're the problem. This is a case of money, and corruption, and the judge that decided this case should be thrown off the bench, and jailed himself. Innocent people died here, and there is no justice here. Children lost their parents. What a horrible story.
The fact that this young man escaped real consequences for taking 4 lives is an abomination of justice. It makes a mockery of the very term. That judge should have been removed from the bench.

I live in Tarrant County, Texas and this case garnered much less attention here than it did around the country. (I have friends/family in other states who were asking me about it.) The press here may make a minor mention of their court dates, but other than that, nothing.
I would be interested to see Dr. Grande do an analysis of Tonya Couch. While both parents appeared to contribute to this situation, hers seemed more "invested" in helping him to avoid the consequences (ie: fleeing to Mexico). The fact that she had her nursing license revoked speaks a lot. I'd be very curious as to WHY her license was revoked (being a nurse myself).
In Iranian highly wealthy and extremely religious group, there is a phenomenon called Aghazadeh-ha (son of a wealthy or powerful family)
They are excluded from law and prosecution, have access to unlimited money, and cause all kinds of different problems for the community.
Their parents mainly have serious involvement with the current government.
They are mainly children born and raised in families with enormous, sudden and easy, unhealthy wealth and a hand in politics.
There was one incident that a woman from a really wealthy political family said
“I couldn’t find a good high school for my son, therefore I opened one”.
This comment being said on tv created a lot of anger for people.
A while ago an extremist, related to Iranian politics and clergy, commented:
"Our kids' access to money and expensive cars and luxury and countless trips around the world is because of “great genes” and has nothing to do with their parents being wealthy or politician. "
He was aiming at people who criticized “Aghazaadeh-ha" for getting into a high political position without any education or experience.

I live in the DFW area. This was such a horrible case in all aspects and a travesty of justice. I see the young man who was paralyzed in the accident often and he and his family have to live with the consequences of Ethan’s actions everyday. Ethan really hasn’t had any consequences to speak of. The parents were too busy being rich and not taking responsibilities for their own actions to actually parent and take care of their child. He was allowed to live in a house, by himself, without any adult supervision as a young teen. In my opinion, they all should have been sent to jail.
I completely agree with you Dr. This case is infuriating. What that kid REALLY needed was serious jail time. In my opinion, when the legal system gave him such a light sentence after killing FOUR HUMAN BEINGS, they not only failed at delivering justice for their families, but they reinforced Ethan's notion that he was somehow special and above the law.
On a lighter note, I'm not a Domino's fan either. 🤣🤣🤣

I remember this case, everyone was engaged by the sentence. It's a defense that will never be used again. The judge in the case [retired] soon after the trial ended.
