1:41:45 I’m an Aussie and I understand and admire the fact that the US Constitution recognises the unalienable right to keep and bear arms. Thou shall not commit murder = unalienable right to life = unalienable right to defend life from lethal threats = unalienable right to keep and bear arms. Keeping and bearing arms is not just an unalienable right, but the moral duty of all husbands and fathers with innocent lives under their protection.
This interview really spoke to me and I was not expecting that, I just expecting to get some good chuckles out of it. When Matt and James discussed moving to an extremely cold place in the middle of Winter and all the difficulties there...phew I have been there, recently and and a five years ago too. Both cases aged me. We live in a COLD and EXPENSIVE part of the world and it has been so tough on my health and I can see how much it has aged my husband and myself. But we have to live here right now for my husbands work and we have an amazing Catholic community that has brought us so much joy and growth. The solidarity from this interview was more comforting than perhaps it should have been 😅
2:38:11 Speaking of J. K. Rowling, when Norm Macdonald was a judge on Last Comic Standing a comedian made fun of Christianity using Harry Potter. Norm didn't care for it. I remember seeing that and appreciating what he said.
This will sound pretentious but - I think of laughter as the involuntary reaction to the realization of incongruity between reality and some absurdity. Essentially a thunderclap of coming back to the truth in a moment. Performative laughter is fake and isn't the same, and can be learned or acted, but real laughter is not controlled. I think drawing laughter out of people is a skill that requires knowing both the truth and the absurd reality of our current culture/state/world, etc. And more than that, it requires being clever enough to sneak up on the punch so people don't see it coming. All that to say, I think vulgarity is a secondary issue for the comedian, as James says. It matters only to get to a good incongruity cleverly than it does to stay clean on the journey there. But the punch could be a clean Christian point that is only cleverly arrived at by going through the cultural mud. For example, Chappelle often brings detractors along by agreeing with them in the setup and punching them with his point at the end, otherwise they wouldn't agree to the journey of the joke - and if they do, and they laugh, he just caused them to self reflect on their own absurdity and become slightly more humble in their view. I think vulgarity can be used similarly and in many other ways productively. Sorry to everyone who read through that thinking I'm a pseudo-intellectual, self-important douche, you're right.
Loved the chat with James Matt seems like a sound lad. One thing GAA is not played on a soccer pitch as an Irishman i spat out my coffee when you said that lol. GAA pitches are 55 metres longer than soccer pitches and the width of a Gaelic pitch is the same as length of a soccer pitch.
Father Mac is incredible! So sad JDFM has gone. Never got a chance to properly meet him. One less person that can make Adelaide more like Steubenville...
The last Latin Mass that I know of in perth WA just got shut down by the bishop of perth even though it was packed to the rafters... Can you invite Fr. Rowe onto the show? Get us some exposure? It's a travesty all the things that have gone down.
Revisiting this because I wanted to hear the Chesterton poem … don’t see it in the lineup, does anyone know offhand which part of their chat that was ?
Happy birthday Thursday, from a fellow single young Catholic! As someone from a working class background myself, I lean more towards James's opinion on "vulgarity" than Matt's. Obviously there are many degenerate comedians who use it to push bad messages or just for shock value, but I think it's also easier for non-degenerate comedians to build a connection with their audiences with it. It depends on what kind of comedian you are and the intent behind it. Norm MacDonald was a Christian but he didn't do "Christian" stand-up.
If you visit Wyoming go to the St. Stephens Mission outside Riverton to see a neat missionary church, then head north and drive up through the Wind River Canyon, picnic at the Wedding of the Waters, and soak in the hot springs in Thermopolis as you make your way to Cody. There visit the Bill Cody museum, especially the firearms museum, before you head into Yellowstone National Park. :-) Let me know if you need a chaplain for your trip!
Come to Indianapolis for a show. We have few good clubs downtown. Also, you'll have the opportunity to visit our famous Children's Museum, mentioned in the show!
If youre looking for breathtaking sceneries go to the sparsely populated upper peninsula of Michgian in the summer or fall when leaves are changing. Its within driving distance of Ohio and the beauty of the Great Lakes is difficult to comprehend. Different from yellowstone but as close as one can get in the midwest.
Hello James, I’m an American, and I have other American friends who are all Catholic Monarchists, as in we believe a Catholic Monarchy is the ideal form of government and that separation of Church and state is foolish. You are correct that there are very few Americans who would hold that belief.
Say... about the supporter thing. Are you guys even active over on Patreon, still? I think I have a "Patreon anniversary" coming up, but then I'm also a Locals supporter, but I wonder if I should, or if I have to (I know other Patreon creators put a pause on payments when they know they won't be putting anything up for a long while). And I remember Street Fighter 2. Only from a big arcade machine at the kiosk closest to my school when I was 13 through 15. I suppose I should feel guilty about never giving the machine any of my money, but being very excited watching some of the other boys from school wrecking their way through the game.
🇨🇦 Canada is widely regarded as a peaceful & safe society. We do not have the American gun culture. But we do have proportionately the same levels as homicide & violent crime as the USA. No guns; same level of harm. 😏

Too bad they tore down all the monuments in RVA. But if you're interested in Civil War history, Richmond and Petersburg have a lot. Siege of Petersburg (Battle of the Crater, depicted in the movie Glory) trenchworks had a big influence on WWI, unless I'm mistaken. Good bit of Revolutionary War history, too. Patrick Henry's speech at St John's in Richmond
Yeah, hunger games sucked. It was like if Disney Channel tried to make a more serious action movie. Songs, cheesy character names, and emotional manipulation. Yay!
James was talking about Ladyballers just not being funny because it was pushing an agenda. I wonder if he's ever watched White Chicks. It's not pushing an agenda, but you know it could never be made today. Gosh dang it is so funny, and it reminds me of Ladyballers in a way. When he does his Daily Wire movie, maybe he can use that as inspiration.
Matt, please try not to talk over your guest so much! You would ask a question that once he started to answer, you would interrupt him. It was really hard to listen to and I really want to hear both of your thoughts completely.
Australia labourparty states have cancelled Australia day matt. Including Woolworth Aldi and get this The Australian open!. Melbourne has cancelled the parade, and councils are having a day of mourning. Tough on the new Australian citizenship celebrations on the same day
I also watched the OA James, and while I loved it overall, it definitely has a couple of sex scenes, and it also gets progressively more woke (includes a trans & a gay character). Not perfect, but one of the most original and compelling TV shows I’ve seen in a long time

Same boat brother. So bizarre. I pray Shane comes back to the faith hard in the future
I maintain that MSSP is, at the deepest level, a Catholic podcast.
Catholic comedy, since conservative word has been hijacked by warmongerers
Many thanks Matt for showcasing James who I know and rate as one of the most talented and brilliant young comedians- he’s a good man
Never expected to see MSSP and Pints with Aquinas sharing a guest hahaha
Or sharing their listeners 😅 didn’t think anyone else knew about mssp here
Catholics have similar tastes, I guess😂
