The mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, announced the renaming of a number of streets due to the city's unwillingness to have anything in common with Russia. At the same time, he wrote his post on Facebook in Russian, which caused criticism from some readers. “Odessa suffered its losses in this war. And we do not want to have anything to do with the state, which today is trying to erase our city, our country from the earth. In particular, we are talking about the names of Odessa streets, which have nothing to do with the history of Odessa!” Trukhanov wrote.
In particular, he proposed to rename such streets as Novomoskovskaya, Borodinskaya, Kurskaya, Voronezhskaya, Chapaeva and others, and eventually translate 24 more into Ukrainian in accordance with Ukrainian legislation.
Also, new names should be given to 19 Odessa streets subject to the law on decommunization. This entire list of toponyms is planned to be submitted for consideration by the historical and toponymic commission, and the deputies of the city council at the session will make the final decision.
At the same time, Trukhanov urged “not to repeat the Bolshevik practices of observing the momentary conjuncture or ideology” and simply return the old names to the streets, or “use a reserve list of persons and events worthy of perpetuation, which has been formed over the years by the toponymic commission.” However, he added that such toponyms as Heroes of Mariupol Street and Great Britain Square should appear in the city.
“And, of course, we will create a large memorial on the site of the square of the ATO Soldiers, where the names of all Odessans who laid down their lives for Ukraine will be immortalized,” Trukhanov added.
