- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- As seen at Eurobike 2019 - The latest Future Works release from Zwift which adds a mountain bike course along with real-time steering in-game. To get the most out of this you'll need to ensure your setup allows for handlebar movement and your phone is mounted on the center of your bars.

The smile on his face isn't due to Zwift. What you're witnessing is a road biker realizing how much more fun and interesting mountain biking is... hang loose, homies.
I needs me a gravel bike. I can't swim in the deep end first! :)
Next up from Wahoo: a trainer that throws you off the bike when you hit a root, called the Wahoo buckr
Sounds more like a Rim Fukr! haha!
Next product from Wahoo a fan that throws mud in your face. Looking forward to bring my XC bike to the virtual trails.
It’s called the Wahoo mudSlingR lol
Man I can't wait for them to put in some proper distance XC paths just like this for practicing MTB riding. Sharp, sudden, short climbs with drops and hard pedaling with soft pedaling, etc. My road bike friends don't understand why MTB is so hard, this video shows why. No constant cadence, no consistent gradient, nothing is smooth and steady about it. It's such good training.
Zwift needs to release a full-blown replica of a bicycle with EVERYTHING incorporated:
· Smart trainer
· Steering sensor
· Braking sensor
Yeah and with hill climb simulation
Wouldnt it be easier to just go outside and ride?
Alfredo1987a Unless I get on a plane to Sedona, not much this time of year for me.
@@Alfredo1987a It would be great for riders who have severe allergies these months

Today was supposed to be a recovery Ride.
But now I have to get that Mountainbike !
Love it
Time to buy shares in 'Lazy Susan's'. 😁 Great video as always. 👍🏽
Whoever came up with this deserves a raise
Following your Kickr Bike videos and am close to pulling the trigger on buying one, but this makes me question that decision. Why buy the "ultimate training tool" if it's already not compatible with the newest feature of Zwift? You probably have the ear of Wahoo better than I -- are they saying anything about this?
@gplama can you do a quick video on your LazySusan set up/ how-to guide. - will be so doing this tonight when I get home...
13:09 So funny, Shane goes "Steering whilst out of the saddle" and you can see the phone screen (with some lag/delay) going "Hey Siri lost in the saddle" !!!
neat hack for the front wheel steering
This puts an end to all the cold and rainy days… can’t wait.
Great fun and works really well with an old Tacx black track steering system 😁👍
Was running up and down that track yesterday. Asked me to stay on the road or go off right on a '?' Course with no picture. Decided to take the mystery course. Was the only one on it. Was a nice little tour of the mountain
Wow!! That worked really well. Tried it with the Wahoo Climb and it was amazing. Steering needs a bit of power steering though with the Kickr Mat under it. Will have to put something under it to make the steering easier. That was fun!
do you think a bit of carpet might work under the climb? to help it pivot
Aaron Milligan Yeah, think that would do the trick. It wasn’t terrible with the mat but could have been a tad easier to steer.
two pieces of cardboard?
Love the fact you gave some people Ride Ons when you mounted your phone on the companion app.
Hahaha exactly! Spread the love, even in a tutorial video!
I wasnt sure about this , but this video looks great . Well done Zwift .
Next video: How to build the angled lazy susan for steering
Going by the way you were moving about there are going to be Zwifters lying on the floor next to their trainers all over the world!
It is so awesome great job to the team at zwift
Thanks for the laugh. I love taking people on trails they have never seen and it’s a complete stitch up with epic vert.
How long till we have some Zwiftduro races when riders have to do their best time on different stages 🤩 Would be so fun! 🤘🏽
What level do you need to be to access the MTB route? I'm a new Zwifter who uses a MTB on my trainer and still pretty low level.
I think it's for everyone.
Gday, Thanks for the turn by turn commentary on the MTB steering option and trail. Cheers!
Looking forward to doing this after I am out of school
Siiiick!
*searches Ebay for Lazy Susan
The gradient changes on the trail make this ideal for the Kickr Climb so really interested to see how it works with that. You don’t get much side to side movement on the bars with a Climb though so the actual steering itself might be a struggle. Chapeau to Zwift though, it looks awesome.
Lama, if you do another video for the new steering feature/MTB course (I think you alluded to a Kickr Climb attempt in another video), one thing that might be interesting to those of us that haven't attempted yet is a camera setup over your bars, sync'd with the video of the onscreen course navigation, just to give us a better sense of how much you are turning your bars to ride the course. Just a thought.
Hoping the new wahoo bike allows some mechanism to turn the handlebars...maybe just slam it and don't tighten it?
I loved the ride. I did it using my Kickrclimb. Only issue was the steering wouldn’t recenter. If you have a lazy Susan type cheese board then you are half way there for creating your front wheel swivel
I tried it earlier today with the front wheel just on the floor. it was a little awkward, so I picked up a lazy susan swivel base from Lowes while running errands this afternoon. Will have to try that out later today or maybe tomorrow.
Shane in action, taking mountain bike route with road bike ;-) Nice, very, very nice :)
Just ordered my turbo trainer cant wait to get on this
Hey llama, what model ‘lazy susan’ do you have? I’ll have a look at Bunnings. I agree that it needs to be on an angle. Thanks for the vid 😎
I can't recall the specific model. I made a video on it ages ago but never uploaded because nothing really used it.... I'll loop back to this and get the specifics as a lot of people have asked.
@@gplama Yassss please....your lazy susan now has purpose!!
Shane Miller - GPLama also looking for the lazy Susan model / love the vid

How does it feel in terms of counter steering? ie at a certain speed, say above 10kph you actually turn slightly left with the bars and lean to the right to go right. It's interesting, and clever perhaps, that they have introduced this on mtb on a big climb where this sensation, or lack thereof, would be less obvious. I think they will struggle to emulate the realism when/if it's applied to the rest of the game. It's still a cool little feature either way, and good on them for trying!
It's gamification, not real simulation for any kind of training benefit.
First go today and got the Mtb on my second go. Love the steering. I have made a swivel plate out of a car cam belt tensioner bearing with plates welded to it . One lower leg has a bolt the change the angle . 16 inch wood top plate with Tacx wheel holder mounted in the centre with one screw. Lucky it even seems to self centre fairly well. After setting the angle of the turn plate there seem no movement at the back of the bike on the trainer. I am planning to leave the turn plate on my setup full time as I like the extra movement on the bike even just riding on the unsteered Zwift.
Will the kickr climb work on a lazy suzan/turn table or will be problems???
Nice ride! And when comes the Elite Suito rewiew? It seems like that is what i´m buying to be my first smart trainer - weather is getting wet and cold in here ..! So all the best to Lama family from Finland !!
Soon. There’s a few early release firmware I’m putting to the sword first.
Ok! Thanks Shane! Your reviews and search for the better is beneficial to the biking community!! I ´m waiting that Suito test . Let´s hope, that Elite can update whatever there is to update to. I ´ve seen the brief test by DcRainmaker so far ....
The suito indeed looks like probably "the best of the rest" in direct drive indoor trainers! (gonna get this one and ditch my tacx vortex.!)
you get to keep the mountain bike as a regular ride!?!?! I'm hooked!!! Ready to virtually wear down knobs on the pave'!!!
Interesting. Do you think the phone needs to be mounted fairly close to the steerer tube, or would it still work being mounted further out front (which would create more of a waving motion rather than a rotational motion)? I would prefer to mount it out front to reduce the amount of sweat dropping on it, and being able to keep my towel on the bars.
I have only tried on the stem.
Nice, will try this out this evening and already ordered 'Lazy Suzans'. :)
Or place a plastic hard lid under the front wheel, that can help too. That’s what I’ve tried with the Wahoo Climb attached 👍
Send it!!! Thanks for sharing.
AWESOME! MORE COURSES!
...AND EBIKE SETTINGS!
(Out of the seat? lol, mountain bike climbs can be brutal)
Seems like those hills on Repack Ridge were actually designed with 1x MTB drivetrains in mind. 50t cassette would definitely help on those 15% grades haha.
Shane- looking for your thoughts. I'm a mountain biker and had a Kickr and Trainer road. I didn't find any routines that simulated mountain biking very well, and found indoor training boring. As Zwift adds more courses do you think its a good fit for a mountain biker in the winter? Which trainer would you pair it with? I'm hoping Zwift might make it more engaging.
I’d look at the kind of short sharp efforts that MTB riding requires and make a few workouts around those efforts.
I guess in races hiting the apex in corners and not hiting the wall plays a big role when they implement it
Rode the mountain bike circuit last night. Using Neo 1 and Apple TV.
Updated to IOS13 and Zwift. Finished the circuit Ok but found when leaving and going downhill a high level of resistance.Tried exiting and resuming but that didn't;t help. Saved closed Zwift and reopened and tried another ride. The resistance was still there for the first couple of pedal rotations then went away. Ok now. Ticket with Zwift but no reply yet.Any idea or similar experience? Never had this happen before.
Shane!, Does your phone have to be mounted at an angle (for the 3 axis sensors) as is common for protractor apps??
I'm not sure to be honest. It seems to work with just a small degree of tilt on mine. I haven't tested it dead-flat.
Remember to pump up your front tire.
Using an simple beveled piece of cedar siding worked as a front wheel plate. And it was free.
Don't flat-spot your tyre now! :)
I’m super addicted! It’s all I want to do today! 🤣
Your reaction is priceless to the never ending ascents, looks horrific fun
Wow. have to give this a try! Looks very exciting! 😀
Hi Llama, so do you think Zwift have been sitting on this for four years and are releasing it now in update 1.39?
They really didn’t do much with it over the years. A spawn point at the start would have been handy. Also a loop course that could host MTB races.
@@gplama Thanks mate - so what are your thoughts on Zwift suddenly turning on steering by default for all events?
@@inthedrops The next few months are the 'off-season' for Zwit when it comes to users/numbers. It's the best time for them to try new things like this. If steering has a negative impact, event organisers will simply disable it.
WAHOO ENGINEERING PLEASE NOTE!!!
Here is a great hack I will soon put on youtube. When I was trying to decide between Kickr Bike and wahoo trainer, I was planning to use Zwift, with a particular interest in riding their new MTB trail. However, I was worried about the fact that steering with smart phone running ZC (Zwift Companion) would only work with wahoo trainer. And as a MTBr I want to ride trails! (Repack ridge) But with an engineering and fabrication background I had a feeling there would be a no-harm Kickr bike hack I would come up with. And so I got the bike, and lo and behold there is! Create Moveable handle bars. I tested the concept by loosening the screws attaching stem to head set Post, applied some high viscosity lubricant, mounted the phone on handle bars with ZC running, and it works: handle bars move, and you can ride repack ridge and steer with Kickr Bike! I have since fabricated my own stem, headset assembly that does this more permanently-with no harm done to Kickr bike as I just swapped the parts. And, this “hack” works incredibly well. latency is not bad, and it really makes for great virtual mountain biking and a great workout. Also moving handle bars generally add to realism and decreases fatigue. So If Wahoo engineers are listening: Make an add on handle bar set with freely moving steering to pair with ZC with smart phone attached. Or better yet, use encoders in the head stem assembly and team up with Zwift for Kicker bike steering. In the meantime I’ll continue to use this mountain bike steering hack! It’s friggin awesome!
Joe
Wow !.. this really needs VR Glasses
This is fucking awesome. Imagine the MTB races!
Shane, did you get a chance when you spun around for your 2nd lap to see if you could ride it backwards? That would be wicked sweet if they enable that. All those brutal "moon trail" climbs would be nutty if they were reversed into descents.
I'm hooked enough after watching to have added to cart out of my wishlist and purchased, the Kinetic Turntable riser I had previously saved when I saw the first videos of this features a few weeks back at Eurobike. I did some quick research back then on "spinny" risers and I think on Zwift Insider someone (Eric perhaps) had mentioned the Kinetic Turntable, so went ahead and grabbed it. I'll give it a go without any initial additional modifications to angle it, and see how that goes and adjust accordingly if need be. Hopefully this becomes something that Zwift continues to expand on and the turntable/lazy susan accessory purchase is justified and doesn't just become a paper weight down the road.
Great review as always Shane and thanks for getting this up so quickly!
No u-turn on the 2nd lap when I tried, no crashes either when hitting rocks head on! haha
@@gplama That last bit is reassuring, especially after my 2nd to most recent IRL MTB ride where I got a little cocky after about 30 minutes of successful riding at one of the more popular ranch trails here in Central/South Texas and ended up endo-ing on a 2.5 ft drop, landing on my head and shoulders about a foot from a pretty prodigious rock that, had i hit, would not have made for a very rest of my day. Didn't sell the mtb after that experience, but let's just say i was quickly reminded of my mortality at that moment. Looking forward to no endo-ing and more single track from Zwift in the future. Will test out Repack tomorrow when that Kinetic turntable gets in from Amazon!
that looks friggin awesome! cant wait to try it out. btw welcome to MTB riding where pinches are steeper but shorter :)
Short punchy climbs, where 1x MTB drivetrains shine. I would almost strap my full sus to my Wahoo to do this course, but I don't have a rear lockout, the pedal bob would be horrible haha. As it is I currently run a hardtail MTB on my Wahoo for Zwift.
Nice. Kinda makes the new smart bikes look less smart though. I imagine the Kickr bike would be entertaining on the course but I believe the bars won't move? But the price tag of the bike makes that a non-issue for me ;)
Gonna be pedal strike crazy when all the Zwift roadies try MTBing for the first time! Cool update to the game.
I think the skills will transfer. I was awesome at robbery and beating up randos after playing GTA. 🤷🏻♂️😉
@@gplama haha, me too! Let's just hope nobody tries to pedal the whole way down a trail. Pretty impressive nonetheless and shows what's coming on Zwift.
Definitely worth trying! Brutal climbing! Damn! Also, how did you make that little rocker plate for the front wheel?? Any tips?
I'll look at making a Swift Zwift Tip on making one. It's simple and cheap.
So many RideOn that is looks like a giant Smurf if hammer fisting your head!
Now to get a lazy Suzan to work with the Kick Climb!
I’ve just bought an Elite Sterzo and really enjoyed this but… is there literally only this one route after all this time???
Looks ace x I’m giving it a go later x pity new kicker bike hasn’t a steer function however looks good . I’d love to try this on a group ride on the road 👍🏻👍🏻
Extremely helpful, thanks!
WOW ! This is cool .
Would a Kirk Kinetic Riser Ring work with this? Even with a first gen Wahoo Kickr? Or would I damage my bike frame?
Yes, but I'd tilt it as shown.
I'm not familiar with Kirk Kinetic's product line, but I just realized there are two versions of the Riser Ring, a fixed one and a rotatable one. I would need the rotatable one obviously and some way to angle it. Maybe a small wedge of wood to hold it at an angle.
@@jspaceman71 for a 73* head tube angle on a typical road bike, you want to incline the turntable 17*.
For any other head tube angles, simply subtract the HTA from 90* and the result is the turntable angle:
Ex: 90* - 71* HTA = 19*
@Shane, how will this work with kickr climb. I was thinking to buy one but maybe I should wait a bit?
This is pretty cool! If you have a 3d TV, you can use the 2d to 3d conversion feature for extra immersion.
Wonder how that would feel on Roovy
Hi Shane, great video, where did you get the pivot plate from, seems to work well!
I’ve used a home made one in the past. The Elite Sterzo Smart is what you’re after for the best experience at the moment.
Update notes also say „Mission added for october“ and „achievements added for completing routes“ any infos about that?
John O RA they corrected the garage note that wouldn’t turn off🤨
@@zeekryder7735 :( i thought only i had the problem. appreciate the solution nevertheless...
I couldn’t find the mission. I did 285 last week but only got 120 credit because I was on Richmond and only part on Yorkshire 😮😧
Oh now I see for October 5 until Kona race. And now we need gravel wheels for the jungle circuit
Is the Garmin vector 3s a good powermeter? Or should i buy another one that money?
I guess you've prepared ahead? Jumped on today for training and saw the update, tried steering but front wheel on flat surface wasn't working well...
Now I've got an excuse to buy that mountain bike. Sweet!
litterally saw this pop up mid ride. been waiting for this to get released .... might be tomorrow thing now
Can you run the main app and companion app on the same device at the same time to use this? Or does it work with just the main app if you use your phone for Zwifting?
No.
@@gplama ok, so Zwift needs to run on a Mac/PC ...pity, setting up Zwift in my apartment is so much quicker when just using the phone :)
Very cool! Hey Shane I had a question, I have a kurt kinetic road machine trainer and I'm putting on a 4iiii single sided crank power meter on my bike, will it work?
Yep. Pair Zwift to the 4iiii crank and you're good to go.
@@gplama Thanks!!
Will there is an auto-eject add-on from Wahoo to throw you off the bike when you take the wrong line and crash ?
trying to figure out how to get that angle onto a standard kitchen "lazy susan"
Glue some foam to the bottom perhaps?
Great vid! As always
If I keep going up the Alpe in training mode of say 150 w would the altitude still count towards the Tron bike unlock? Because if it does then you are cheating & May as well be wright doping right?
Yes. And no, it’s not cheating because the speed of elevation gain is related to the energy you’re putting in. 150w erg or 150 w in sim mode will climb the hill in the same time.
Thanks. I’m at 80% & I want the Tron but I need more zone 2 work outs. Great help 👍🏻
Could I stick the phone to my head (on a helmet?) and steer by looking left and right? Any hacks for people without the suitable phone mount or lazy Susan front wheel plate? I have some Blutack and string for the phone.
Sticky tape your phone to your head. Lean. Done!
Hack attempt 1: Found an old plate of metal, propped it up on some wood, blutacked a bit of paper to my wheel and it now slides around beautifully! Phone case is blutacked on too. Pic: imgur.com/a/v7bzzHe
Edit: paper came off the wheel halfway up the course. Squeaked my way through to the end.
@@diracflux That is because the contact point of the tire to horizontal ground is behind the actual center of rotation. The actual rotation is at the intersection of the head tube angle project down to the same surface supporting the tire. This is effectively the "Trail" value and exists in all modern bikes.
Shane's solution of inclining the rotation, to match the head tube angle is one approach. For a typical 73* head tube angle (as measured from the horizontal ground), you want a 17* incline on the lazy suzan (also measured from the horizontal ground).
Another solution is to keep the rotation "flat" to the ground, and shift the center of rotation forward. There is an ideal location that will reduce the twist that was demonstrated. You can see this concept employed on the new Elite steering block from Eurobike 2019.
How would you modify your set up with the kicker climb?
Maybe a larger plate to rotate on. I'll tinker around on the weekend with this.
When are wahoo planning adding an alongside treadmill so that most Uk Mtb riders can get off the bike on the ups & push their way up the climbs , then coast& steer down the descents?!
(Said as a Uk based rider always amazed at how many folks walk on climbs)
they even get the bike head lamp bang on :)
I have a spare phone case with a garmin mount sticky on the back, so my phone mounts right on my garmin mount. The 2x4 I use as a wheel block is not as cool as your lazy Susan. This is cool.
zwift recomend direct drive trainers how the Tacx Neo 2T and the Wahoo KICKR, other smart direct drive trainers can be used?, pasive direct drive how lemond trainer can be used with zwift offroad , with power meter pedals?, thanks.
Do you steer into the corners like a riding tricycle, or counter steer like you do in reality on a bicycle?
Tricycle. Without some funky hardware it's not going to replicate real steering. This is gamification.
Shane! Patent that Lazy Susan design for indoor steering ASAP!
I’d have to pay royalties to every Susan out there. It could get expensive... for me! Hahah!
“Lama Steering Disk” sounds like a product to me.
Great work! Did you reduce trainer difficulty on Zwift?
Nope
I wonder how Tacx Road Feel is on the course. Could be pretty cool!
It works, like the other dirt/gravel sections (as reported by my wife from her ride last night).
What if we don't want to do the turning ...can we still ride the old way?
Nice work from Zwift this mtb route. Now need to thing how to ride that with kickr climb.
12:23 : Distracted at first, I started to sweat severely when I saw the counter displaying 15'31" still at that point of the ride (vs the necessary finish time off 12'30" to get the MTB). Knowing that Lama was already drooling a bit to keep up with this pace.
Hopefully include a cyclocross bike and races 💪💪💪😂👍👍
I was dreaming about that for a long time. Next big thing would be to add XC WorldCup Courses to Zwift. After that invite Nino for a round and see how good you are on Zwift😆😆
Good video!
Haha really enjoyed watching that.... I wana try!
