As it shakes out Simon Kenton is my 6th great grand uncle. His father is my 6th great grandfather. Certainly explains my never satisfied need to be outdoors hunting and wandering the woods! Its in my DNA!

I am related to Boone with family history going back to Boonesboro BUT what I was always told was that Boone was not the savior of Boonesboro. The one they totally gave all the respect to was Simon Kenton.

My fourth great grandfather Laban Records was Simon Kenton's lead scout from 1785 to 1797. Daniel Boone mentioned my grandfather Laban and Simon in Sketches of the Life of Daniel Boone.

TB1968 I have a friend who told me his relative Spencer Record was traveling with Simon Kenton. I wonder if you two are related?

1 Simon Kenton was a famous Ohio Valley frontiersman. Further on in the narrative, Spencer Records indicates his pleasure at having been personally acquainted with Kenton. Moreover, Records proudly recalls an episode illustrating that he was more shrewd than Kenton- at least on one occasion. See below, p. 567. Clark, Frontier America, 100, states: “Kenton was present at the occurrence of more major events in frontier history than any other frontiersman.” For a book- length biography of Kenton, see Edna Kenton, Simon Kenton: His Lifs and Psnod, 1755-1886 (Garden City, N.Y., 1930

You made a nice brief history of a great American Patriot, Simon Kenton. Your recommendation of The Frontiersmen by Allan W Eckert is spot on, a very great read. Another great read by the same author, that covers a ton of history of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky is That Dark And Bloody River. The Indians and the settlers lived tough and brutal lives that most of us would never fathom, if not for books and history like this, telling the truth as it really happened. Thank you.

Allan Eckert's narrative histories are a must read for anyone who wants to understand the white settlement and displacement of native peoples east of the Mississippi. Begin with "Wilderness Empire" (1968), which covers the Seven Years War and ending with "Twilight Of Empire" (1988), which covers Black Hawk's war.

He wasn’t captured “many times by the Indians.” He was only captured twice, once after he had an escaped from the Shawnees.

Simon Kenton died when he lived a little ways north of ZanesFIELD, Ohio, NOT ZanesVILLE, Ohio. ** He was buried on the same property that his cabin was located on, which was a short distance east of State Route 533 in Logan County, the same county that I was born and raised in. The gravesite was located at the South end of an apple orchard that was, more than likely, planted years later. ***** This site was Kenton's choice for a place to finish out his life because he had spent a lot of time in the Madriver valley and hills as a scout and frontiersman. Years previously, he had been forced to run the gauntlet at a Shawnee encampment that was located a few miles South and East of Zanesfield next to Madriver creek. This encampment was later attacked and destroyed [ while the warriors were gone ] by General Benjamin Logan and his men. It was known as Mack a Chak town. Mac o Chee Castle [ a popular tourist site ] was built on this location a short time later. **** When Kenton was forced to run the gauntlet, at this encampment, he broke through one of the lines and ran barefoot across the field and over the hills in a West / Northwest direction while being hotly pursued. Upon cresting over the top of one of several hills that ran in a line, with shallow valleys between each of them, Kenton followed a downward leading valley that led him directly into contact with Chief Blue Jacket and a few warriors who were on their way to Mac a Chak town to watch Kenton run the gauntlet. Blue Jacket was on horseback and was able to catch up to Kenton and, when he did, he delivered a forceful strike to Kenton's skull with a weapon that was a combination of a tomahawk and a pipe. The pipe side of the weapon knocked a chunk of Kenton's skull down a quarter of an inch against his brain, instantly putting him down. From what I remember about the history of this incident, Kenton was taken to another nearby Shawnee encampment that was known as Wapatomica so that he could recover from his head injury and could then be forced to run the gauntlet again at a later time. It was while Kenton had been at Wapatomica for some time while healing, that Simon Girty, another frontiersman, visited the Shawnee encampment. Girty was familiar with the Shawnee and they respected him. Girty recognized Kenton and, if I remember correctly, was able to get Kenton freed from the Shawnee's grasp into his own care which, subsequently, led to Kenton's total freedom. **** Even though Kenton wanted to finish his life out in Logan County and be buried there, years later, [ like in the 1970's ] some of the ' powers that be ' decided that his body should be exhumed and moved to a cemetery in Urbana, Ohio. **** From what I remember, the Ohio Historical Society was involved in unearthing Kenton's body and it is said that they opened the coffin and took photos of the body for historical purposes and to verify that it was definitely Kenton's body. The skull injury that had been inflicted upon him, years earlier, by Blue Jacket would have been a key factor in properly identifying the body. **** From it's quiet resting place in the scenic country setting near Zanesfield, Ohio, Kenton's body was exhumed and transported to a cemetery in Urbana, Ohio where the general public can drive by his gravesite on a road within the cemetery that passes within 15 feet of it. ** Personally speaking, I very much doubt that Kenton would have been impressed with knowing that his body would, in later years, be moved to a location with a road running right by it where it could be used as a ' tourist attraction ', or his gravesite having the ' atmosphere ' of a lowered-key ' zoo '. ** Just my opinion.

Simon Kenton is also the one who killed the Shawnee warrior Big Jim, who was the one who tortured Daniel Boones son James to death in 1774

I read “The Frontiersman “ years ago while in service. It was a very good book.
And, I learned a lot about the early frontier that I never knew.
