@@HeartToHomeWoodworking Hi. Sorry, what I meant to imply was: why didn't you board in the floors and walls with "free" boards off your dad's mill vs the plywood? I assume the obvious answer would be its way easier and faster, but thought there was some other conscious decision made based on other factors. Since you went with B&B siding I assume you don't mind putting in a bit of extra time, so I was just just curious since you must have considered it.
Ahhh, okay! My dad originally asked the same thing too. There is actually a good reason why I didn't do it. Because the milled lumber is green, it would have shrunk significantly on the inside of the kiln, leaving gaps in the walls and flooring (since you wouldn't use battens to fill in between the boards). On the outside, green lumber isn't such a big deal, because it won't shrink as much as inside, and you have the battens to hide everything. Does that help at all?
@@HeartToHomeWoodworking Yes, that makes sense and I had considered that issue as well. I was balancing the aesthetic vs the cost of OSB/plywood. But, with those costs coming down lately I find the osb/plywood options becoming more tempting. Great series BTW. I've watched many kiln builds and this one is very good quality. Hope to see the channel grow.
@@robwheeler6333 thank you! Yes, it seems like the prices are starting to come down in my area too. So again, if you could afford 1/2” or even 3/4” for your floor, I definitely recommend it, as the 3/8” flexes too much between my joists right now.
I’m about to build mine kiln thanks for all the info
You’re welcome! If there are any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Looking good
I'm curious why you didn't board the walls and floors
Hey Rob, thanks for your inquiry. Sheathing was installed as you saw, so I’m not sure exactly what you mean. Could you please elaborate?
