I’m surprised that Seinfeld seemed not in touch with his singular presence when he referenced that a joke told was basically over once told. There is also the joy in recalling funny stuff alone or together. Great interview.
A lot of comedians don't actually understand comedy. As Seinfeld says here, they come up with jokes spontaneously. But they don't necessarily understand why the joke works on an audience.
What Jerry ways at 9:05 is so true for all forms of art. The best art isn't really about some Message. That's a sermon. It's just a recreation of experience, a shared experience about life.
The sock in the dryer joke is the one I retain above all his other standup stuff. Weird that he says that about not repeating jokes, though. People have listened to comedy albums for generations, over and over. I’m sure he did as a kid. We all did (I’m about his age). Carlin, Brooks & Reiner, Cosby… we’d tell them to each other and crack up.
Watch ANY episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" -- its essentially early Seinfeld on steroids ("what if you caught someone without a limp parking in handicap?" "what if you were responsible for your aunt's obituary and there was an unfortunate misspelling of aunt?")
He was on "Later" THREE TIMES before the show was anywhere near a hit? (Costas references "last year with a half dozen shows" that means this interview is taking place after the second season, when the show was still struggling mightily)
Do you even know what he gets paid for his presence? He can make millions each day... if he chooses. Put yourself in HIS shoes next time you're at work. When you go to take a dump, remember this: "If I were Jerry Seinfeld, this shit would have cost me 6 figures!"
Larry David is the same teach. Watching them ad libbing in a diner on comedians getting coffee wasn't funny at all. It's when i realized that as a comedian everything you say isn't necessarily funny.
I remember watching one of his live performances after Seinfeld and the only funny joke was How do they know the exact date of when milk expires? Wasn't anything else close to that.
. Interesting to see Jerry this early in his Seinfeld (show) run, before the show REALLY exploded into the phenomenon it eventually became. He still seems pretty grounded here, and not that he became a big megalomaniac, but you definitely DO feel that his ego now is DEFINITELY not the same as it was prior to the accolades (and CRAZY money!) he's since received since his show has gone off the air..... .
Adam Sandler had only first appeared on SNL less than 2 weeks before this Costas episode aired. But he was barely in the episode. Most likely Jerry did not have Adam Sandler in mind when he made this remark.
Jerry Seinfeld is number one amongst comedians, even the comedians say so. You may not agree but he had the biggest show on tv when they quit and there isn’t a theater that he couldn’t fill.
What a great interview!
The moment at 7:08 really does seem a likely origin of the whole “show about nothing” thing. It’s pretty fascinating
I had the same reaction. It would be interesting if the credit for that moniker goes to Bob Costas, of all people.
True because I don't think they used it on the show until they were trying to do the NBC pilot. Which I think was later than 1991.
oh man, i remember this show! I think late night NBC around 11pm ish early 90s
Now you need not stay up later
11pm?? No, no, no. It started AFTER the Tonight Show and Late Night were both over. 1:30am.

It’s interesting to see Seinfeld say that Larry David is the brain behind the Seinfeld show. I’ve never seen him say it anywhere else before.
Watch ANY episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" -- its essentially early Seinfeld on steroids ("what if you caught someone without a limp parking in handicap?" "what if you were responsible for your aunt's obituary and there was an unfortunate misspelling of aunt?")
I felt the same way.
5:10 I'd never heard that joke before hahaha
Did Bob Costas come up with the phrase about “nothing?” I didn’t think it happened until season 3?
at 7:04
Season 4, and, yes, Costas saying it here predates them saying it on the actual show.
Suit and tie with sneakers. Classic.
FFF
1:34 Anyone who's watched Curb understands the truth of that statement.
He was on "Later" THREE TIMES before the show was anywhere near a hit? (Costas references "last year with a half dozen shows" that means this interview is taking place after the second season, when the show was still struggling mightily)
They needed to fill the guest chair every weeknight.
Bob: Do ppl try to go out of their way to be funny in front of you?
•proceeds to try to be funny in front of Jerry•

My god. I was three when this happened. The world is so not real.
So Bob is the one who first observed that Seinfeld was about nothing.
Before Jerry thought his presence was a gift.

Jerry Seinfeld’s presence is one of the best gifts ever! lol

@@johnrwalker53 agreed, because when you have that level of success you tend to think your shit don’t stink.

I've seen him do solid routines after the show ended, such as when Paul McCartney was honored at the White House.
.

Millions of dollars and fame can do that to most humans
Yes, he has become the Jerry Lewis of our time in terms of ego.
@@Amp497 However, I saw him interviewed once, when he said that he knows he's vain.
Jerry's ego exploded after Seinfeld's success.
Jerry Sandler haha
Adam Sandler had only first appeared on SNL less than 2 weeks before this Costas episode aired. But he was barely in the episode. Most likely Jerry did not have Adam Sandler in mind when he made this remark.
This is before the huge fame of the show, really odd seeing this what if huh? fame merely seconds away at this point.
Agree...Jerry had little optimism it was going to succeed
Actually this was the second year and the show was doing very well by then
I remember Bob Costas show, didn't last long
Which is a shame, considering what the filthy, trash passes for entertainment, hosted by, and starring filthy mouthed skanky people.
Is six years your idea of not long? You have tough standards.
Jerry was so nice and personable before success got into his head.
Yes, he let it go to his head in a HUGE way! POor guy.
He was going to LIE, Until CAUGHT
.. LARRY DAVID 💯
Jerry Seinfeld will be remembered for being about nothing. Nothing.
As well as yourself, apparently..........
Make a show that runs for a decade and capture the attention of the world.
He's a billionaire 😂
I could never figure out how this person ever made it with his unfunny observations.
And that's why he has a billion dollars, and we got nuthin'.
He met Larry David, who helped him along just a little bit.
Satan works in mysterious ways
He's a genius, we're not.

is there anyone less funny than seinfeld? maybe costas trying to be funny

Adam Sandler.
I'd be willing to bet that you are.
Costas made a valid point. Jerry blew him off. I don't think it's because Costas was wrong or because Jerry didn't get it. 🦺
If you would like for anybody to understand you, you will have to provide more context. It was a long interview.
@allendracabal0819 very good 👉
