They have knurled knobs for Jack's on presses that serve (poorly) the same thing

I don't think it is a good idea, too easy to drop a load on you.
This is a horrible "hack" even the execution is poor. Adding a lever to that valve makes it too easy to get bumped. Adding a lever with gravity pulling the vise grips to the open position is also poor execution.
