No, it is not influence of Hindi or Urdu that Writing Punjab changed to Panjab. It was the British who wrote Punjab. It was same for Amritsar which was written as Umritsor and Ambala as Umbala. In English language the word with letter “U” is pronounced as “A”. After Independence, changes were made to reflect Indian pronunciations.
Appreciated effort as there isn’t much Punjabi information on social media. But this video is very surface level information, misses all major characteristics and beauties of language. It’s too focused on Eastern Punjabi and talks next to nothing about western dialects. I respect your comments. However, the idea that a language often begins as a dialect or derivative of another language is rooted in the evolutionary nature of language development. Language is not static; it evolves organically over time as societies and cultures interact, adapt, and change. Linguists suggest that many languages, before becoming distinct and independent entities, originate as dialects or regional variants of a parent language. For instance, Punjabi, like many other modern languages, evolved from earlier forms of speech. It traces its roots back to ancient Prakrits, which were themselves derivatives of Sanskrit. Prakrits were vernacular languages spoken across the Indian subcontinent, and from them emerged Apabhramsha, an intermediate linguistic stage. Over centuries, Apabhramsha diversified into regional dialects, eventually giving rise to languages like Punjabi, Hindi, and Gujarati. The same principle applies to European languages. Modern English evolved from Old English, which itself was a mix of Germanic dialects brought to Britain by the Anglo-Saxons. Old English was later influenced by Old Norse during the Viking invasions and Norman French after the Norman Conquest. Each stage saw English borrowing words, grammar, and syntax, until it became a distinct language. This linguistic evolution underscores that no language emerges in isolation. It typically begins as a regional variant (or dialect) of a dominant or parent language. Over time, due to geographical, political, and cultural factors, these dialects acquire unique characteristics, such as distinct vocabularies, grammatical structures, and pronunciations. Eventually, these differences become pronounced enough to classify the dialect as a separate language. A key factor in this transformation is the role of literature, governance, and standardization. Once a dialect is adopted for administrative or literary purposes, it gains prestige and wider recognition, which further solidifies its status as a language. For example, Italian evolved from regional Tuscan dialects, primarily because of the influence of Dante Alighieri’s literary masterpiece, *The Divine Comedy*, written in Tuscan. Thus, language formation is an evolutionary process. Every language carries the imprints of its ancestry, and most begin their journey as a dialect before acquiring the sociopolitical and cultural significance needed to be recognized as a language in its own right. This historical interconnection highlights the dynamic and adaptive nature of human communication.
