Lore correction here. Thrall did actually have the Axe of Cenarius BUT the Axe of Cenarius was, I believe, not lost in the Twisting Nether (it washed up on the shores of the Well of Eternity) but lost in the Emerald Dream during the events of Stormrage.

If they ever end up killing Thrall, it would literally be to open a storyline to Nagrand to learn more about the orcish afterlife. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe we see Geyah sacrifice her life to bring him back or whatever. But Thrall will literally never be gone and nobody thought he was.
