  • Mera Peak is located in the Everest region at an altitude of 6476m making it the highest of all the trekking peaks in Nepal. It was first climbed 9 days before the first summit of Everest, on 20th May 1953. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing (known as ‘the foreign sportsman’) had climbed Mera peak for the first time. Since then most of the climbers follow their footsteps to climb the Mera peak.
Even though it is graded as a trekking peak, it should not be underestimated. This is a high mountain, one has to make sure that they are well acclimatized and have some knowledge before attempting to climb Mera peak.
All the effort is worth it. The view from the summit is considered one of the greatest in the whole Himalayas, with 360-degree views of 5 world highest mountains: Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho You as well as many other peaks of the Khumbu Region.
Lukla to Mera Peak and back to Lukla is about 78-miles long. The trail begins along with beautiful Sherpa villages, rhododendron, and pine forests. And you will be trekking on rough terrains, along with glaciers, crevasses, and climbing to the summit.
Mera Peak is extremely tough even graded as a trekking peak, it involves no technical mountaineering, and however, it is not an easy climb. Lack of proper acclimatization, cold and dry winds, extreme cold weather, and a long summit day make the Mera Peak climb very challenging. If you have already done a high-altitude trek in the past and managed it all well, then it is time for you to take on Mera Peak. But make sure you acclimatize well before scaling the peak. Altitude sickness easily can kick you hard. Although no technical skills are needed to climb Mera peak, the test is about stamina and endurance. Other dangers on this climb are the possibilities of extreme weather conditions.
Spring and fall seasons are considered to be the most suitable time of the year for any climbing journey in the Himalayas. However, April, May, and Mid-Sept to mid-Nov are the best time to climb Mera Peak, in these months you will get stable, warm, and dry weather.
Mera peak climb begins with 35 min scenic flight to Lukla and after 5 to 7 days of the trek, you will reach 5054m Khare which is the last village of the trek. After a couple of days of acclimatization over 5000m the actual climb will start. From Khare 2-3 hours walk, through a rocky and steep trail you will reach the crampon points where you need to use climbing gears then climb up another couple of hours on the icy path following rope lines, and avoiding crevasses. Once you reach High camp, camping crews already set up the tents and prepare hot food for you. High camp provides excellent views of Mt. Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, the south face of Lhotse, Nuptse, and many other mountains.
Summit push starts around 2 am in the morning. The route is still non-technical as climbing on about 45-degree slopes of Mera peak. The slope steepens for a section behind the ridge and the summit comes back into the view. At the foot of the final steep summit need to use a fixed rope. Finally, on top of the Mera peak 6476m, and the summit provides spectacular views of the mighty Himalayas including Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,210m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kangchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,855m), and others. After the summit retrace steps back to the high camp where you will rest for a while before descending to Khare. And then trek back to Lukla.

This is a beautiful video. I already completed Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Is this trek much more difficult than those?

Trek difficulties are similar. But the climbing section is something different and it's not easy.

You should check on latest regulations from Nepal Tourism Authorities, those change from time to time, last I knew is you will need a local guide to do trekking.

Thank you. Very interesting. But, you have a very annoying habit with your arm movements as you talk. Watch it yourself and see what you think.
