  • I dry wash and pan for a larger quantity of gold in the Mojave desert with Alan Chenworth and William Osman. From the gold I get, I melt it down and draw an electrical wire that can transmit electricity, opening the door to making future electronics!

    Your biggest problem with the annealing process is that you need to hold the metal farther away from the nozzle. The hottest part of the flame is at the tip of the blue cone and at 9:13 you are clearly holding it halfway inside. Not to say it isn't hot in there but it isn't hot enough. The rule of thumb for other non-ferrous metals is to heat the metal until it glows a cherry/dull-red and then quench immediately. 9:33 is better but you have to keep in mind that the tweezers there will sap out some of the heat. 9:36 you are again way to close with the flame and the metal block you are heating it on is taking away all of the heat. You need to heat it on a stone or something that will reflect the heat back up onto the metal. If you have a container filled with pebble sized chunks of pumice and heat the gold on that you will find it to be much easier. www.riogrande.com/product/Annealing-Pan-with-Pumice-7-dia/502046 I'm not sure if links work in the youtube comments but if not just google pumice annealing pit.

    Is there a reason for not trying to pull the wire when it's heated? Seems (To my entirely uneducated mind) that it would stretch a lot easier that way and be less prone to snapping.

    • @htme
      @htme  6 років тому +5

      Supposedly you don’t need to, as long as you anneal it frequently enough. Keeping it hot the entire time would have been challenging (its small enough to cool super quickly), so I didn’t even try that

    • @Robert-jm9hz

    • @mischa2643
      @mischa2643 6 років тому

      It can do the thing that stretched taffy does if the wire is hot during pulling-stretches to threadlike thinness in hotter spots and breaks. Warm is fine, but not hot! Honestly, though, gold is ductile enough that you don't really need to heat it for pulling.

    Just a tip: if your wire keeps breaking it might be due to work hardening of the gold as it gets harder and more brittle the more you work it. You can counteract this process by anealing the metal so just heating it up a bit without actually melting it.

    I imagine a collab with Sam Zeloof or Jeri Ellsworth in which you make a transistor from sand. I know it's probably not realistic though. I think the process of making the silicon wafers needs some very expensive equipment. It's still a neat idea though. One thing you could look into is making a capacitor and/or inductor from scratch. The inductor would be fairly easy cuz all you'd need to do is make a coil from wire. The capacitor you can make from foil made out of your gold and some sort of thin insulator for the dielectric. I made one myself out of Al foil and plastic wrap. There are all sorts of designs for DIY caps and it's fairly simple to do if you have the material.

    Gold is resistant to weathering not necessarily erosion hence why it is transported down streams often

    You need to get your gold to the right temperature to anneal it; it all has to do with atomic structure and how compounded the atoms are in your solid. If you crush or distort your gold (or any metal) after annealing it you risk breaking it if you go too far unless you re-heat it and repeat

    This comment will probably get drowned under loads of other comments but here you go
    *Possible uses of gold:*
    *Rare metal catalyst* for certain organic chemistry procedures (e.g. H2+O2H2O2)
    *High voltage battery* (due to gold's low position in the metallic reactivity series, a high potential difference can be generated when gold is used together with a more reactive element e.g. aluminum or graphite inside a galvanic cell with an electrolyte e.g. salt water)

    Try making a functional walkie talkie from scratch. 4 parts to that project. You need to make a microphone, a speaker, a radio transmitter, and a radio receiver. But totally doable
