    Chorus:
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

The fact they could write something that embodies the grittiness so well, then write something as wholesome as "Do You Believe in Magic?" is pretty astounding. It's like "Helter Skelter" and "Lady Madonna" on the White Album. These guys were/are brilliant.

They really were amazing! Such an underrated group. And I apologize for being "that asshole", but Lady Madonna isn't on the White Album. It was only a single in the UK, but it is on the American album of Hey Jude. Yep. And again, I am sorry🤓🤦

Summer In The City is a classic done brilliantly by John Sebastian and The Lovin' Spoonful, an American No.1 in August 1966, it peaked at No.8 in the UK that same month. America's No.11 of 1966 was the UK's 85th best seller of 1966.

      @StormyLynn724 2 роки тому +6

@@bandgeekonflute I miss those days so much too….it was such a simpler way of living…..and I remember being very happy kid back then….and when I heard this song it was like the perfect ending to a Friday night! and that was back in the day when you could actually call the radio station and request a song and I remember my girlfriend used to spend the night either at my house or I would spend the night at her house and we would sneak a little transistor radio into the room and just wait all night for that song to come on! I remember being nervous to call up the radio station because I didn’t wanna wake my parents and she didn’t wanna wake hers… that’s because the phone was attached to the wall in the kitchen! So someone would now!! Lol
And sometimes the transistor radio would go dead because we had had it on all night long just waiting for the song! and it was in the summer (obviously!) and the windows were wide open and you could just smell fresh cut grass from the previous day….you could totally hear crickets through the night and birds in the early morning.
I mean I remember everything…. I was a young teenager….And early in the morning when I could see that the sun was rising I would hurry and take the transistor radio and put it back in my fathers garage so he wouldn’t know that I borrowed it! I would grab two pop tarts and a coke on my way through the kitchen and back to my bedroom….landing on the bed and whispering: “Score!” (my brother and I used to fight over pop tarts so to know that I actually got the pop tarts before him was a victory onto itself!)
to think that was the worst thing that I could’ve done at that age was to sneak my dad‘s radio into my bedroom so I could hear a song…. Eating pop tarts and drinking a Coca-Cola….I just realized how innocent that sounds….that’s not The way kids talk today….. I remember that with such clarity. I don’t even think thats things that kids do today …. I don’t even know if kids today would even have any idea what I’m talking about. The summers of my innocent youth….
🍺 cheers to a timeframe where being young and innocent was absolutely freaking cool!

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Hot town, summer in the city

This song works so beautifully because of the conflict between minor and major chords. Our narrator, the lead vocalist, is telling us about the oppressive heat and all the other dramas of living in the city, but when we switch to the major chords briefly, the flip side is discussed, all the positives that make bearable all the negatives.
