When I visited Vietnam, as a Chinese, I was really surprised when I saw all the Chinese inscriptions on royal or traditional Vietnamese buildings in contrast to the Roman Vietnamese inscriptions on the modern streets. Although I understand that switching to simpler scripts to write their language was a historical choice: either made by Western colonizers, the Vietnamese government, or the people themselves. Due to my "pan-Greater China" mentality or the subtle chauvinism that exists in my heart, I always associate it with the decline of China's national destiny in modern times, which makes me feel melancholy.

i think the problem is that the chinese characters were not ideal for vietnamese (can't say for sure because i know only very little chinese and no vietnamese) but it was the same case with Korean. they also used Chinese characters and later invented a more convinient alphabet...

I think it is important to first recognize that Vietnam has its own distinct culture and heritage despite Chinese influence. Not sure what you mean by China's national destiny...Vietnam is its own country. Chinese script, even when developed into Nôm scripts (derived from Han script) to write spoken Vietnamese simply couldn't capture the spoken language effectively. Linguists who are reconstructing ancient Vietnamese found that Vietnamese had to compromise and gave up additional sounds in their language to write it in Chinese-derived script. There was also no consistency which led to a lot of confusion and for the most part, it is only used by officials and the elites while the majority are illiterate. Chinese was not used by the common people, written and spoken Chinese was not used for everyday business or interaction.
When the Latin alphabet was introduced, some of the most learned scholars and leaders of Vietnam advocated for it because they recognized that Latin alphabet could more effectively capture the spoken Vietnamese language, is more consistent, and almost everyone can learn to write and read easily, not just the elites.

You are correct. Vietnamese tried to develop a script from Chinese and called it Chứ Nôm or Southern script to write spoken Vietnamese. But it was not effective. It didn't really capture the spoken language and so a lot of the sounds were compromised or sacrificed to write it. But Nôm script was also inconsistent because no consistent rules were making it difficult to learn and so the majority of Vietnamese were therefore illiterate. Once the Latin alphabet was introduced, learning to write and read was much easier, it was also much more consistent with clear rules. It captured pretty effectively what the spoken language sounds like and most importantly, it tremendously improved the literacy level of the entire country. Common people can do business with the ability to write and draft contracts and other transactions. People can understand official documents and other governmental papers.
