  • In this lesson we're going to setup our data sources in Google Sheets with the help of Supermetrics. We're going to pull data from Facebook Ads and Google Analytics and prepare it to later be used in Google Data Studio.
    Google Sheets combined with Supermetrics is a great way to control data that later goes into our data dashboards - it gives you the possibility to change data around, clean it up and even combine data sources (which is not possible in Google Data Studio itself).

    Julian, Great stuff! Any thoughts about how to match late conversions, which register in GA on a different date? That FB campaign could no longer exist, or have zero spend.. and we'll miss conversions.
    Thanks in advance!

    A query: when I perform all the steps to extract the data, when I click on the supermetrics button "Get data to table", I get a message: "Error, Query failed: Your query returned no data",
    Why is this happening??

    Julian, I appreciate your videos very much. Thank you for taking the time to train us on these processes! I have a question for you. I set up a tab to contain aggregated data so that I can pull it into the Google Data Studio. I have the SuperMetrics tabs scheduled to update on a daily basis. Those work fine but how can I get the query function to update on a daily basis? I'm specifically talking about the query you ran at 19:50 in the video with the asterisk to get all the data. Is there a way to run that query on a daily basis so that the aggregated tab has all the new data?

    • @MeasureSchool
      @MeasureSchool  6 років тому

      that's interesting. I haven't taken that into account. Thanks for pointing it out.
      Maybe try the following: Go to File > Spreadsheet Settings and change the Calculation fields to update more frequently.
      If that doesn't work the only other thing I could think about it using AppScript with a timer trigger. But that would be more complicated to setup.

    • @MikeMurphyinc
      @MikeMurphyinc 6 років тому

      Measureschool I ended up using the trusty vlookup instead to match up the dates on the aggregated tab and that seems to be working just fine. I just pulled the formulas all the way down to the bottom of my sheet to allow variations in the number of days per month.
      The query function never updates, am I correct? It appears to be a one-time search whereas a formula/function always updates when the corresponding cells change.

    Great vid! Question, in order to match the rows in FB+GA, the campaign names (etc) needs to match. How do you make sure to always keep the FB campaign names equivalent to GA? do you use the as campaign name in FB?
    Cheers

      manually input headers and have datastudio pull into row 2 with setting 'no header row' (protip: double check you have the column sorting set so that they don't become rearranged when data is updated)

    Is there a way to find out the meaning of all the different metrics? For example, at 11:16, you see 6 different "click" metrics... how can I find out the difference between these and other metrics that appear to be so similar?

    • @MeasureSchool
      @MeasureSchool  6 років тому

      it depends on your traffic source. So you would need to go to Fb Analytics directly and look up the different metrics and their meaning.

    Now that there is a Facebook connector on Data Studio, would you still use google sheets first?

    • @MeasureSchool

      there is some stuff you can do with that connector, but if you have different sources you want to combine, you can still only do this outside (sheets) of GDS

    Hi Julian, thanks for the video (this and many others). I wanted to combine Facebook Data with GA in Data Studio in a different way. Could you tell me if it's correct?
    1- Download Facebook Data with Supermetrics (Date-Campaign-Ad Set-Ad Name).
    2- Upload Facebook Data in Google Sheets to Data Studio
    3- Connect Data Studio with GA
    4- Edit Dimension names of Facebook Data Source in Data Studio (Change 'Ad Set' to Ad 'Content' and 'Ad Name' to 'Keyword')
    5- Create 'Source / Medium' Dimension in Facebook Ads Data Source in Data Studio (Source / Medium = Facebook / cpc)
    6- Use Blended Data in Data Studio using as Join Keys the Dimensions mentioned previously
    7- Add to the Blended Data metrics of GA such as Transactions, Sessions & Revenue
    8- Add to the Blended Data metrics of Facebook Ads such as Cost, Impressions, Link Clicks

    Thanks Julian. Nice tutorial but I found Supermetrics very expensive.US$50/month is too much for personal use. They need a tier for non agency business. Do you know another platform to pull data from GA and FB?

    Hi Julian! As always, great video:) I have one question. You are using Supermetrics to create a feed. This is not a free tool, and, after the trial, it's rather expensive. Can you recommend another way of creating the feed in Google Sheets (that might require a little more work, but still be relatively easy)?
    Simple data export from Facebook Ads doesn't seem easy to format. Maybe you have an idea? Thank you:)

      Facebook has their own Excel tool for pulling data (FAME). It's not as user friendly as Supermetrics, but this is at least free for pulling data from Facebook Ads manager :: facebook.com/business/news/facebook-ads-manager-for-excel.

    Hi Julian, the information you gave to your 17: 06s from your video does not work. We are having serious issues with a customer because we need to bring real data from within the Google Analytics API (after all, it's actual sales data, properly collected by the platform, not sampled) and he insists on bringing false data when we run the queries In Supermetrics, even if we use this "try to avoid" functionality.
    After two weeks of waiting after proving that the data was not coming correctly the Supermetrics staff washed their hands indicating that they could do nothing and asked us to complain to Google, which in turn does not support Google Analytics (wich is free), only to Analytics 360.
    Frustrating.

    • @MeasureSchool
      @MeasureSchool  7 років тому +1

      I don't speak for Supermetrics or Google, so I can't comment on it working or not. That's something you need to try out with the data set that you are working with - I merely try to teach the information, which I still think is valid.

    • @juniorjr.9125

      Off course Julian, I did not imagine that you were passing on wrong information, either intentionally or not. I just wanted to add to the subject so that other people who can try to be alert about this problem that until now has no solution.
      Keep up the wonderful work, I am one of your most devoted followers.
