  • Sky News host Caleb Bond has slammed the “pathetic” Labor government for “deflecting” on the issue of energy as Australia attempts to reach its net zero target with renewables.
“I have to say this back and forth all week about nuclear energy has annoyed me because we’re not just talking about some abstract political argument here - we’re talking about something that is so important, such a basic right, that it deserves far better than the dross we’ve been served up,” he said.
“The Albanese government has, at every opportunity this week, laid into the Opposition for its nuclear energy proposal.”
Mr Bond said the reason the government is “going so hard” against the Opposition’s nuclear energy plan is because Labor has no plan that will “actually deliver the energy we need”.

Trouble is the renewables Advocates are being dishonest, the reports that Bowen uses as his claim that renewables are cheaper, the AEMO's Integrated Systems Plan (ISP) and the CSIRO's 'Gencost Report' have all sorts of creative accountancy that doesn't show the real cost.
For instance, the AEMO's ISP relies heavily on homeowners moving to rooftop solar with battery, and even EV's feeding power back to the grid, but doesn't cost it at all, if even half the Australian households buy an EV and get battery solar, i.e. $50K + $15K times 5 million, that comes to $300 billion that the public has to pay for, but that, apparently doesn't count.
They class Snowy 2 as already paid for so, that saves them another easy $12 Billion on their estimates !
The CSIRO's 'Gencost Report' doesn't take into account a lot of the infrastructure requirements, transmission lines, battery storage etc. When questioned on this they say that their report is mainly from an Investors perspective and from that perspective, it is not their concern, and that's AEMO's field of responsibility !
They are basically saying, if you buy a house, the price doesn't include the electrical, water and roads etc, they are already there, we're just telling you how much the house is going to cost !
That's just some of the chicanery going on, there's more, but it's almost impossible to get a clear picture of the true cost.

And that for the Australian people makes the huge pay rise they just gave themselves, a real slap in the face to the Australian people.
Lastly, cost for our energy sector is less important, what is important is that Australians get a quality , reliable electric system that businesses , industry, and the general population can rely on , for many decades to come.

My recommendation to the LNP is just to 'tune out from Labor', Let them and the Greens do whatever tickles their fancy and the LNP would be better served by using its energy and reasons argumentation on providing factual and realistic information on nuclear so that most of the voters can make an informed decision at the next election. If the LNP ignores Labor and the Greens jokes and nonsense that has been dished out so far, there an old saying and that is, "Dogs wont bark for too long if they are ignored". How would it be for Bowen to disclose the FULL and ONGOING COSTS of his renewables plan, and how it's being finance,. A Simple question surely for is the Chinese Belts And Roads plan involved with its high interest rate and short term and are the estimated costs of $1.2 trillion correct. This should not be a hard question for a minister who has done nothing else since elected. Until Bowen produces a costing, rumour's are all there are to believe. Or worse still I have to assume $1.2 trillion is the lower end of the real cost. Hideing it away makes one suspect the much worse outcome; above $1.2 trillion on expensive Chinese finance. Was China's Premier Li Qiang arrival in Australia linked to a finance deal? The common plebs will never hear that. Its ludicrous to demand the Libs provide a cost for their plan this far out from an election when the one that is being built today remains uncosted to the average Australian.

Renewables do not have a consistent power output. Which means that Labor don't understand how the technology works, the Gigawatt power they claim is the unit's maximum power rating; the actual power production is variable from 0 to what they claim. They can't predict how much power it will generate, so their Gigawatt output claim simply can't be guaranteed. For solar, 1 giant cloud passing over a solar farm is all it takes to reduce a solar systems maximum daily output. Yes a single cloud can alter the energy minister's figures that he presented in the house of representative. Solar will barely work in a monsoon without at least a 14 day battery reserve, and produces less than 25% of it's rated power generation in Victorian/Tasmanian winter with the reduced hours of daylight.
Then there's the issue with solar cells being DC current, which means that Labor must have accounted for a massive AC power inverter for their solar farms, DC current doesn't travel anywhere near as far as AC current. An AC inverter in a rural area will consume a significant amount of energy from the solar panels to push the AC current all the way to any cities. If they have to travel further than existing coal/gas power plants then they've created a royal mess.
I'd like to see the inverter costings, and the storage technology expenses announced in Labors budget instead of this constant vague avoidance. They're not providing costs for what they're doing right now, and not even willing to plan for future expenses in new industries that Australia is poised to pioneer. By being unwilling to discuss industry progression, they're effectively blocking our national security.
Wind turbines produce AC current, so there's no power inversion issue there, but the grand total of turbines needs to be announced. If the number is over 2000 then forget about it. We have extreme winds in Australia, more than enough to burn the break pads turbines use during high winds.
Taxpayers have a right to know what their money is being spent on. Especially when they pay thousands for grid-tie rooftop systems that don't make any difference to their power bills.
Both political parties need to consider costs over 100 years, the public barely care if politicians only think within their lifetimes.

A person might believe we have never had a government led by the Coalition. - What is a 'social conscience' ? - We were told that privatisation of energy companies would make energy cheaper. - That was a whopping big lie. Our energy companies are probably now owned by private equity investment corporations, and have CEOs who are paid to maximise returns to shareholders.- ua-cam.com/video/nermCANqyvM/v-deo.html

what happens when a solar farm gets hit by a hail storm or is subject to spontaneous glass breakages due to thermal fatigue. Australia needs a reliable mix of power. Nuclear does not replace renewable but renewable should compliment the base load to have a reliable mix of power that is cost effective in the long term.

    Are there any operational SMRs?
The OECD's NEA recognises three SMRs as operational, with over 50 SMR technologies currently still under development as identified in their latest SMR Dashboard report. Any estimate about cost or time to construct, whether optimistic or pessimistic, should be considered with a high degree of uncertainty.
What are the disadvantages of SMR?
The lower power output of small modular reactors equates to smaller economies of scale, meaning the cost per unit of electricity generated may be higher than that of larger reactors, particularly in the absence of widespread deployment and standardized designs. As such, it is difficult to have confidence in production times, learning rates and cost reductions proposed by the industry, especially in light of problems faced developing larger reactors.

Its not just the government that laid into the Opposition for its nuclear energy proposal. Energy analysts and business representatives across the country were critical of it. The owners of the proposed sites weren't even consulted. Owners already have other plans for those sites. What does that do for business investment confidence?

Bill Gates has a huge investment in nuclear with a number of plants (eight I think) planned to be coming online over the next decade or so. I guess by your logic he has pissed his investment down the drain? Our current position is due to piss poor leadership across the political spectrum for the last three decades. People who say nuclear will take too long and cost too much just need to look at Snowy 2.0 to see that these arguments are just gaslighting.

Memo to CB. Nuclear is certainly not going to deliver the energy we need. Even if we made the decision tomorrow it would be 2045 at the earliest before we got a nuclear plant, by which time all our coal plants would have already reached retirement age.
There was just ONE new reactor construction start outside China last year, and only TWO so far this year.
    Nuclear is going nowhere.

@@anomadhunter They are getting too old. The main reason for our current high power prices have been outages at coal plants forcing expensive gas to fill the gap. IIn the winter of 2022, up to 14 out of 47 coal generators were offline at once. Callide C still has a unit offline after a catastrophic explosion in May 2021 that caused blackouts in SE Qld and into NSW.
