    Thanks. 20 years trucking for me, the last 12 in super -B's but now I'm running the States for the first time ever. Heading down to Cali next trip, so I wanted to gen up on this. Never too late to learn new tricks, even after two decades behind the wheel. Keeps the job interesting, always.

    Extremely helpful vid! As are all your videos. For a greenhorn they don’t teach us that stuff. And this helped me greatly, rather than a costly mistake. Awesome! Keep them coming.

    So just finishing up my CDL School. They told us how to do it they just didn't do it for us. They told us that we will learn how to do stuff like that when we go to a carrier or wherever we go. But while they're teaching us they leave the tandem's all the way to the back of the trailer. And when we test for our state Idaho we test with the tandem all the way to the back of the trailer. Thank you so much for the video and the knowledge.

    You neglected to say that the reason that you pull your tandems all the way to the back when you’re backing into a dock is because it raises the rear of your trailer up so that you’re even with the floor of the dock so the forklift can more easily unload and load your truck. If you fail to get in the habit of doing this the shipper may have you pull back out and perform this function so it is just common courtesy to get in the habit of doing this every time you pull into a dock.

    So the last setting you did was the California setting or the standard one? Im confused where the arrow should point, edge of tire, center? Thanks for clarifying

    Very helpful, currently on the road with my dad and I've seen the term "sliding axles/axle sliding" plenty of times and I didn't know what it meant.

    What if your trailer doesn't come with a cheat sheet? 🤔 Meaning the arrows ⬇⬇⬇ to let you know where to set them. How do you know where to set them correctly?.

    • @josephbaggs4109
      @josephbaggs4109 4 роки тому +4

      Hey Lashey, 10 feet from the back bumper to center of your rear axle.

    • @thealexkirschproject

      One of the tricks my trainer told me was depending on what state you're driving through you can do the following. For West Virginia, you measure from the center of the back tires on the drive axle (so the very back tires on the drive axle) and use measuring tape, (if you are willing to buy a 100ft measuring tape that is) and measure out to 37'. Once you measure that, you then set your tandems to that length. For places like California which is 40', you measure from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle on the trailer. Same deal, you measure from the center of the kingpin to 40'. My trainer suggested, using a grease pencil to make a mark of 40' and then setting your tandems to where the 40' mark is right over the center of the rear axle. Then you're set for California. For places like Connecticut, which is 43', you would then measure from the Kingpin to the center of the rear tandem. Which is in between both axles on the trailer. I looks like a V between the axles. Same process, measure from the kingpin to 43' then make your mark. Then set your tandems to where the mark of 43' is over the center of the rear tandems.
      I know this is 9 months later but hopefully this helps.

      @@thealexkirschproject Easier to measure 10 Ft from the back of the trailer(on the flat part) and make a mark. That is the California mark. Easy. Most the time on 90% of the trailers, the 40' mark is the 4th hole. From the mark you can do any of the others easily. Just measure 1 ft and make a mark.

    How are you using the arrow stickers? What exactly should each arrow (or in-between the two) be aligning with?

    • @pokeysauce
      @pokeysauce 2 роки тому +2

      I believe the kingpin is at the front of the trailer (the thing that connects it to the semi) so those stickers mark the measurement between that and the rear axle of the trailer. So the arrows should be aligning with the rear axle. *I am not a trucker*

    • @julierehoric3856
      @julierehoric3856 Рік тому +1

      I think 43 feet from kingpin to middle of tandems, but now this makes me think I listened wrong and it’s supposed to be middle of rear rim

  • @julierehoric3856
    @julierehoric3856 Рік тому

    So the arrow needs to be in the middle of the rear wheel? I just went through training and I thought they meant between both wheels.

    If you are in a tight space to back up (New Jersey), leave the tandems in the forward position to make the trailer swing more quickly.
    That can save you 20 feet of space trying to back it in there.
    Once you are lined up, put the tandems all the way back so you can get close to level with the dock.
    Remember to criticize the loading / unloading crew for not being faster... They secretly love that.
    You measure at the middle of the rear axle, right ? It's not the leading edge of the rear tire or something nuts like that, is it ? No one ever told me nothing.

    Is there an easy way to pull the pin on my trailer when I leave the van in a lot?

    • @Zalagar619
      @Zalagar619 2 роки тому

      If you already pulled the pin to slide the tandems, get em where you want them, then just push in your trailer brake(red) in the cab and it will automatically release the pins without needing to get out.

  • @Alpha-Scythe23
    @Alpha-Scythe23 Рік тому

    Question: so you keep the red trailer brake pushed in as well as that trailer button in the back so that it can slide? Or do you keep the tailer break pulled out and button in back pushed in for the trailer to slide? I just wanna make sure it’s done right when I’m by myself.

    • @NightowlTrucking
      @NightowlTrucking Рік тому +2

      You have to have the trailer brake set (pulled out) to hold the tires in place or the tandems won’t slide.
      The only reason he released the trailer brakes (pushed in) at the beginning was to fill the trailer’s air tanks, once they’re charged (filled) you can set the trailer brakes, get out, and push the button.
