From knowing quite a few physician-scientists (and being in an MSTP student myself), MD/PhD graduates don't always have to pursue the residency track. Many individuals who follow the bioengineering track will often do a postdoc and go straight into industry positions. Some MD/PhD graduates will go through residency and only perform clinical work for many reasons (although this is very much frowned upon). There are so many combinations of the tracks that I have seen physician-scientists take. Also, depending on the type of research you want to do. If you want to do predominantly clinical-based research or epidemiology, doing med school and getting master's in med school or residency could be sufficient (and will save you a ton of time).

Hello Ashley! Thanks for your question. MD is a Doctor of Medicine. These professionals become medical physicians. PhD for Doctor of Philosophy. You can become a PhD in almost any academic field today. These professionals have versatile career choices in any industry. Hope this helps!
