Cool presentation of fencers! Best I’ve ever seen!

4:10 if you listen very closely at the end of the introduction you will learn from this video that Race Imboden is an Italien fencer

One of the more forgivable FIE commentary blunders

Believe it or not, I think this might actually be one of Karim's better attempts at commentating. I mean, at least he's actually describing actions and second intentions instead of yammering on about things completely unrelated to the fencing. Did he do a great job? Maybe not. A better than usual job? I think so
Ahhhhahah that isn't Karim is it? Just some other Brit that somehow has the same voice.
      Oops.

I really wanted to watch this bout, and it was super laggy on the FIE stream

14:00 I really don't like the call being upheld here. If pulling your entire arm back as you go forward isn't preparation, what is? And Gerek's timing is perfect and clearly not evasive. I like Lefort's fencing, but it seems unfair that his attacks never get called preparation. Of course, some similar things could be said about Massialas... I wouldn't object...

I'd prefer it to be called prep too for the same reason. Additionally, it would provide some balance for shorter fencers since if taller fencers can just bend their arm back, there would be very few situations where shorter fencers have the advantage

    Rant:
Budapest 2019 - A Certain Kind of Magic - Magically starting the trend of 720p streams at Fencing World Championships (but at least there weren't random fps drops like in Cairo - what an embarrassment). Also the main camera is so far away from the strip that you would need actual magic to be able to see the blade actions. Doing multi-layer cropping and tracking would take too long, so I just increased the scale of the fencing parts to ~120.
On the subject of editing, I reduced the volume on Karim's cringey scream at the last point too. I don't believe that after commentating for 8 years, Karim suddenly gained a monstrous amount of enthusiasm for the winner of this bout and Team Germany at Euros (and for this season only). All his last-minute screaming did was to dampen my enthusiasm for the end of the match.
In all seriousness, the Budapest World Championships seemed to focus entirely on the experience of the audience who turned up at the venue, and while that's great (as far as I can tell from Bizzi photos and the 720 stream), how many people do you think were in that stadium on the day compared to anyone with an internet connection who wants to watch fencing for all eternity

    Description:
Despite being the most dominant at World Cup events in the 2016 to 2021 Olympic Cycle, Team USA has never won the Men's Team Foil World Championships ever before. Team USA had made the World Championships Finals in 2013, 2017, and 2018, and every time it had been defeated by Italy.
France is a historical power house of the Men's Foil Event, however, recently it has been outshone by Team USA. Despite this, Team France had won the World Championships in 2007 and 2014, and placed Silver at the Rio Olympic Games (where Team USA placed Bronze).
Will Team USA win its first ever Gold, or will France bring back another World Championships Gold Medal?
    Match-up History:
2011 Catania World Championships - Team France loses 44-45 in the Finals against the reigning World Champions - Team China. Team USA does not medal.
2012 London Olympics - Team USA is blown away at the Semifinals, while France had its historically worst fencing performance at the Olympic Games, returning with no medals
2013 Budapest World Championships - Team USA makes an amazing comeback against France in the Semifinals. Team USA loses to Italy in the Finals, while France defeats Russia to win Bronze
2014 Kazan World Championships - Team France wins the World Championships, beating Russia in the Semifinal and China in the Final. The two teams did not face each other
2015 Moscow World Championships - Team France loses to Team China in the Bronze Medal Bout. Team USA does not medal. The two teams did not face each other
2016 Rio Olympic Games - Team France wins Silver, Team USA wins Bronze. The two teams did not face each other
2017 Leipzig World Championships - Team USA wins Silver, Team France wins Bronze. The two teams did not face each other
2018 Wuxi World Championships - Team USA wins Silver, Team France does not make medal rounds. The two teams did not face each other

Surprisingly Team China was so strong during that early 2010s, but where did they go now🥲

    • @Dancingtuna
      @Dancingtuna  2 роки тому

@@jennytran._.5901 Retired. There was hope in 2015 with Chen Haiwei and Jialuo Shi, but Chen retired after Rio and Shi kinda faded away. After they were gone, Mo was good at beating a giant in the 64 then losing immediately after, but after he won Asian Games in 2018 I don't see him anymore.
There were interesting rumours about why Chen retired.
The first is that some Chinese sports schools or athletes produce fake date of births to say that their athletes are younger than they actually are. This would give them an advantage on the Junior and Cadet circuits, and there were speculations that Chen - the 2014 Junior World Champion - was one of them, especially since he just looks old for his age.
Another speculation is that Chinese foilists in Chen's cohort were taught to lunge in that massive heel lands first lunge like he does and that leads to many injuries and that's the reason why he stopped competing as much after Rio.
The final is that after becoming an Olympian, Chen could make more money by coaching rich kids. Coaching is also less taxing on the body, so he went to do that instead.
Bear in mind that ten years ago, Lei Sheng was World No. 1, one of the best fencers of his generation, and individual Olympic Champion, Ma Jianfei was World No 1, and Team China won the World Champs in 2010, 2011, and came second in 2014. Now the Chinese men's foil team from what I can tell is some weird mix of Ma Jianfei and Takahiro Shikine that loses to Hong Kong and even "Chinese Taipei". So I donno what's going on, whether this generation of athletes or coaches just don't know what they are doing, or they had funding cuts for some reason, or Chinese athletes just focus on the money making competitions like Nationals and Asian Games or Championships, or fencing is not a popular sport for kids looking to become professional athletes, but it's not looking good for Team China right now.
