1:02:00 So the reason he mentions "no one turns into a boat" is that part of the boss fight in KH1 involved Ansem (the Xehanort nobody confusingly calling himself that) literally turns into a giant flying boat monster. Really.
Okay so no name litterally doesnt have a name, but when the MoM gives Luxu his keyblade, Luxu is like, whats its name, and MoM says "no name" trying to tell him it just doent have a name, and Luxu takes it fucking litterally and it becomes named No Name.
To be fair, making it's naming an incidental character moment is more character writing than most series crams in after 20+ hours of intense gameplay

My dood, when he says the Heart isn't a beating heart in someone's body he literally explained that it was more like their soul, just named as their heart in the game. Why spend so long getting confused on that point one minute into the video XD
Because people like to play up the “l0lz kingdom hearts so weird and confusing I can’t understand basic points that are explained before the game gets confusing” aspect of kingdom hearts commentary
As for the "heart" comment. The Japanese use the word "kokoro" (heart) to mean someone's spirit...it's not a physical heart (shinzou), it's a spiritual heart. It may look like a goofy valentine's heart but in Japanese the idea is that, that's their spirit being lost.
As someone who never played the games, experiencing Sora's Bizzare Adventure this way was fantastic; what a great tale. Thanks nick for sharing the experience

The Sora and Riku character combo is an age old pairing, the Red Oni / Blue Oni dynamic. It's the funny, upbeat, spunky guy vs. the serious, straight, quiet guy. Mythbusters had the same characters with Adam and Jamie.
I wanna try and explain Xion.
Namine is a kind of special entity tied to Sora and Kairi. When Sora released both their hearts in KH1, she was created at the same time as Roxas. Because of the strange circumstances regarding her creation, she has the ability to mess with Sora's memories.
During Chain of Memories/382/2 Days, she takes those memories and Xemnas puts them into an artificial body that he could take control of. This is Xion. Being made of Sora's memories gives her the ability to use a keyblade. She basically exists as a backup plan in case things didn't work out with Roxas, because Xemnas needed a keyblade wielder to release a bunch of heartless' hearts, something no one else can do.
Actually, it was Xemnas that copied Sora's memories in KH1 (He was secret boss there) since Xion apears before everyone goes to CO.
16:00 Square Enix probably didn't think about Nobodies back in KH1, so they hadn't thought of being turned into a heartless also makes a nobody, and beating both brings back the original person. With Sora in KH1 it was basically the power of love that brought him back 😂
They did actually. When they released the Japanese exclusive PS2 special edition they had a Nobody boss fight and new reports explaining their creation and the Organizations backstory.
BestGuyEver's Kingdom Hearts 101 lecture on youtube is probably the best explanation of the crazy mess that is this story, that is also an entertaining watch. Also the Jack Sparrow crab thing the funniest shit

45:45 Nobodies can make thise darkness portals to teleport basically, and the organization realized Axel was rebelling, so in a moment with Sora he made a portal for him while Axel fought off the mindless nobodies, sacrificing himself.
56:08 This one sort of makes sense, but noy really. Nobodies look identical to their original selfs, but for some reason Roxas doesn't look like Sora. (Namine is an odd one cuz she was made from both Sora and Kairi 🤷🏽♂️). So, why is that the case? Well, this new guy, Ventus, at some point when Sora was a kid, got his heart inside Sora, kinda like what happened to Kairi. So when Sora stabbed himself, Roxas *and* Namine were made, one looking like Kairi, the other looking like Ventus. *Except* for whatever reason, while Namine *is* Kairi's nobody, Roxas *isn't* Ventus' nobody, even though Sora at the time had both their hearts. 🤷🏽♂️

By the "not literally hearts" thing, what he meant is that it's not a literal muscle pumping blood like a real heart. In real life if you lost your heart, you'd instantly die. Not turn into a heartless; just straight up die. Vs. Kingdom Hearts where It's still a physical object, but more like a magical item that holds your soul? Basically, exactly what hearts have symbolized in fairytales and cartoons for centuries

I love Kingdom Hearts but it has one of the most convoluted plots of all time, hardly makes sense.
In hindsight of the Terra-Xehanort becoming Terranort, we're lucky that they didn't start calling Norted Nobodies as Nort-bodies.

" Princess of Heart" is a GRANTED title. Girls exist out there and they have NO darkness in their hearts. Kairi is one of these girls. When her heart went into Sora, she didn't create a heartless OR nobody, her body just went comatose. THEN, Sora tried freeing Kairi's heart from his, but he's a 14yr old kid who doesn't know how to do it right, he winds up releasing Kairi's heart in ADDITION to his own. KAiri's heart goes back to her body, and Sora's turns heartless... A nobody is created of Sora (Roxas), but Kairi's heart, leaving the wrong body, causes Roxas to Split, CREATING a nobody for Kairi (Namine) by proxy. Kairi's "Princess of Heart" powers, causes Sora's heartless to turn back into Sora, but both Roxas and (his "sister" but not really sister, but yeah but also no, but KINDA) Namine, they continue to exist separately from Sora. SO, without Roxas (primarily) Sora is KIND OF running around as a heartless ( not really though, but...kind of?), but he's incomplete. Roxas, wakes up in Twilight Town ,without memories. Namine wakes up in Caslte Oblivion, with SOME memories and the magical ability to mess with the memories and heart of Sora, and by proxy, the memories of people who are connected to his heart.

It's weird, as someone who has played the entire series and knows all the lore, it's got some twists and some reasons here and there that are weird, but it's never been too hard for me to actually follow.
Yet seeing vids like Barry's where someone tries to explain it, and even from myself trying to explain it to others, it DOES sound so weird and nonsensical.
It's something you kinda just need to experience I suppose lol, cuz I'm stuck in a middle ground of "nah its not complicated" to "man this shit is bonkers"
Im mad you said Zora because there is quite litterally a new character introduced who comes from a totally new universe only known at the moment as "Unreality" and the main guy from there who you fight as the secret final boss of re:mind is named FUCKING YOZORA,,, AND HE IS VOICED BY DYLAN SPROUSE FROM ZACK AND CODY
“Two different words for the same thing that mean different things” isn’t just a Kingdom Hearts thing, it’s a Japanese language thing in general that shows up in a lot more localizations than you think. Lmao

One thing Kingdom Hearts does is that it explains everything but if you miss just one game it messes everything up.
Non numbered games? Important.
Mobile Game? Important.
Movie? Important.
Even a snippet from a limited time concert in Japan had important information on how a character in KH3 was able to show up.
If someone knows the reason then please tell, but why didn't Sora create two heartless since Ventus's heart was still inside him?
What if I told you that almost everything here is just the first saga of the series? That’s right. We just entered Phase 2 not that long ago.

@@rockleesmile To be fair it’s hard to put 20 years of gaming history in one video. They did a good job summarizing but trouble explaining, which is difficult since the series intentionally leaves things vague and explains them later. Like the time machine in KH1. We had no idea what it was when it showed up and wrote it off only to see it show up years later in Union X where we learned the survivors of Daybreak Town, including Ventus and the people who would later become Marluxia and Larxene, used to survive.

I feel like almost every question of KH's lore could be answered with "Well, yes, but also no."
The sora heartless thing is basically just, kairi is a princess of heart and her pure light reaches out to sora's heart and brings him back from the brink of darkness so for the rest of 1, CoM, and most of 2 sora is implied to be a heartless with a human form kinda like Ansem, which is PROBABLY why he gets his anti-form, but he becomes a whole somebody again when roxas rejoins him at the end of 2. Since new hearts can be born from things like memories, roxas grows his own unique heart which is how he returns as a new unique person in 3. I think its the same kinda deal with naminé and i guess xion which is how they become new people later in the story.
If you need a MUCH shorter explanation with A LOT better context, I'd recommend Oni Black Mage's "What happened it Kingdom Hearts ___" series.
Almost every video is under 20 minutes long. He hasn't done 3 or the DLC yet, though. But the DLC is actually a lot cooler than he heard 2nd hand. There's like 14 Dark Souls level boss battles and a new character that KILLS SORA!

I don't know why I remember this, but I know DiZ stood for some weird shit like "Darkness in Zero" or something like that. I do not know, however, why the hell did Ansem the Wise chose that name, but I'm sure there's a secret report or some cutscene I didn't pay enough attention to where he explains how he came up with it.
Yes the story being explained over many hours of many games does make it make more sense. This video, either for comedy, out of being a third-hand report, to intentionally portraying it as confusing like the meme, or both, omits tons and tons of important information and explains other things poorly.
Also the mobile games are fucking stupid because the story is good and important but it's being told in what is essentially a pay-to-win gacha game over the course of like four years.
Barry mentions it, but I find it really funny that the bodies w/o hearts are Nobodies and the hearts w/o bodies are Heartless. It's like engrish only it's grammatically correct.
I never got people complaining about donald and goofys AI when it is incredibly customizable. If they're wasting items its cause you left them on default
You should definitely listen to Waypoint Radio's Lore Reasons podcast series on Kingdom Hearts. They went through all the games in chronological order and earnestly learned the story and the lore of the game. It's super worth anyone's time because the crew over at Waypoint are so great.

It does make sense. You are watching videos from a guy who HEARD about the story for seven hours and was drawing the entire time. The videos are called A GOOD ENOUGH summary. There are a lot of details missing.

I've played all of the games except I didn't beat KH3. I've never heard the term "somebodies" ._.
Maybe they say it here and there, but it's not a term they really use, unless it became more of a thing in KH3

Here’s the thing every player character is an audience proxy. They are as lost in the beginning as you.

31:50 it's normal to not understand, the summary goes in chronological order, but Days was released AFTER KH2, so it's kind of a mistake to explain Days before KH2.
I think that points to a recurring issue with the plot of KH: people make it way harder to understand than it really is. Most of the "complicated" stuff really don't matter that much. Imo the best recap are the ones square made for KH3, they explain exactly what you need to know before going into KH3 in a few minutes. Sure a lot of details are lost, but if people want all the details, it's easier to watch keys cinematics and read the various reports than to learn stuff from games you didn't play via someone telling you how they feel about the series. Because there's also always judgment in the middle of recaps, and that doesn't help. And of course, since KH games released on multiple consoles at first (I still don't think that as crazy as people make it out to be), most people used summaries made by other people at least at one point.
Now, the good enough summaries are in fact very good and mostly right, so in themselves I think they're still worth watching. But yeah, KH is usually very dumb but also very honest, and looking for inconsistencies like people do for Nolan's movie doesn't really makes sense.

This "Summary" should be called "KH story for those who don't know KH by someone who doesn't know KH". It's filled with so much inaccuracies and makes it look worse than it actually is. Just play the games in release order and it's not that hard to follow.
Kingdom Hearts IS bad. Don't pretend that a few inaccuracies in a joke video makes it "look bad". It's bad all on it's own because the writing is TERRIBLE.
I feel like 'Kingdom Hearts' is really just the exact recipe for how much and what drugs you need to take to even follow this anymore. If they hadn't outright said that good and evil are absolute forces in this setting and maybe written the characters better this "story" would make even the tiniest hint of sense. Fuckin' hell my brain *STILL* hurts and I watched this yesterday!
