This is great information. Since I don't have iTunes anymore and have the Music program on my Mac, here's what I did. I copied the "Music" folder from my local Mac drive to my External hard drive first. This way I don't lose my Playlist. And then in Music I went to Music/Preferences/Files and then in Music Media Folder Location I changed the path by clicking Change and chose my external drive/Music/Music/Media (in the Media folder is where all the music files are). Played to test and it worked! I deleted all my music files from my local drive and freed up a lot of space. I'm pretty sure I will lose my music from my iPhone when I sync but I will figure that later down the road. :-)
Thanks, Joey. You have made a complicated potential problem easy to solve. I followed your instructions and my folder is created on the E: drive. Checked it and everything looks fine. Thanks again.
Thanks for this. My question is: how do you move the iTunes library that is on an exteral hard drive to another one to start fresh? My old iTunes hard drive is too old and presents issues. I wish to start afresh. Is there a way to do that? Or do I just drag and copy everything and redirect?
BuT Does iTunes Make coPies of the music without storing it on your computer's hard drive or do you have to have the hard drive plugged in to your computer to play the library of music? Anyone? 🤔
Great job explaining this! Another question - how do i copy my itunes from my laptop to an external drive if II already have a saved version from last year on the external drive? So basically I need to save another version, but I dont want to lose the version that I already have on the external. Help :)
By doing this, is the music available offline? For example, if I load and save on external, can I plug and play by USB port on my car stereo almost as if I had an iPod?
Once I create a new location on an external drive, do I then go back to my Mecbppk and simply delete the original iTnes/Music folder ?? i.e. to free up space ? I DJ a lot, and maybe I would keep a back of a external music folder ??
thanks, but each time I open iTunes it goes back to the old location as if it was somehow programmed to go there instead of the hard drive. What else I can try?
Joey- I actually can do this for mu music library no issues....but I have over 1000 ripped of my personal movies that apparently don't operate the same.....the Mac and Apple TV won't recognize the external drive....ideas ?
When i move itunes folder to external hard drive can I then delete the itunes folder on my laptop? Or will this get rid of all iTunes? I just want to get rid of all the song media because it's using up all my memory on laptop?
Hi Joey,my name is Declan O Shaughnessy I have a I pod 160gb classic on my Lenovo SSD 500gb and I run on usb 3.1 and usb 3,2 for external drive for importing my cds onto iPod I have had trouble the c drive has not enough capacity for the file of I tunes and am deciding to buy an external ssd 1tb to link my I pod library to hold tracks and keep labtop memory low otherwise it would severely lag if it had to deal with my iTunes library taking up space in c drive. Two questions I have for you is as my labtop does not have thunderbolt plug and is on usb 3 sockets what make 1tb external ssd would you recommend best for my scenario and price as well and as I have windows 10 is it best to format it once I receive it yours sincerely Declan O Shaughnessy 👍👍👍
I have all of my itunes on an external drive and my iTunes media folder location on also listed as the D drive (external). I have tried 6 ways to Sunday to get this to open, access and play, to absolutely no avail. The only thing that shows up in the library are the items on the cloud. iTunes on the D drive shows 216 GB, but absolutely nothing will open up and play. HELP
Hey question, just downloaded all my movies from my itunes onto a hard drive, but i cant seem to play them on my roku tv, it says "Roku devices support USB drives that are formatted with the FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, and HFS+ file systems. Many new USB drives are pre-formatted with the exFAT file system, which is not supported." so how do i change the format of the movies i just downloaded to the that? and which one would i use? thanks
@@ryankarl1328 You need to format your hard drive to any of the listed file systems (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, or HFS+) . Your movie files are fine, just store them in another place for the time being. Formatting deletes your files, so back it up somewhere first before formatting. (Formatting is simple, just right-click and the options shall appear). Once formatted, throw your movies back in. It should work.
Ok, so I transferred the files to an ssd..but each song is a separate file..which means that I can’t play an album as a new song wont play after the last one..how do I fix this?
There’s a setting asking if you want each song to be in a individual file and you most likely had it checked as yes. Uncheck the box via the same method used here. And you should have all songs in one playlist type folder

After i do that can i delete the iTunes folder on the internal hard drive of the computer to free up all that space
How do I leave it in my iTunes library but duplicate it to my hard drive?

Hi Joey.
What do I need to look at before purchasing an external hard drive, for conversion?
Does it have to say mp3?
Type C?
etc.
Thank You
Just noticed after I posted here that no one replies to the questions 😂

iTunes is no longer iTunes, it's Music now! My Advanced Preferences don't look anything like the window you are showing. Please update your tutorial!
this looks like snow leopard !! 2009 iMac !!! lol

😂 holy shit I’m old
How do you do this now that everything’s music on Mac and there’s no iTunes?
Hi Joey, do you have to keep the external hardrive plugged into the pc?
Not sure I agree with this one what about holding down shift while loading up iTunes way?

Does my music need to be downloaded to my Mac's hard drive or can I download right from iCloud to my external hard drive?

How do you play the music that is on the external drive?
Can it be done from an iPad

How do you synchronize your computer!
I've managed to do it but iTunes music duplicates on to my c drive !!
I need some help with this. If someone can chime in would be great. During the recent upgrade to the newer OS it seems that the file somehow vanished.

Thank you so much this will help and save me a monthly fee, not to have iCloud storage. #jedisforjesus
Why are all e-how videos super old and outdated?

This is isn’t a guide for putting the songs on a hard drive
Now I can’t find the file extension to put it on a hard drive. Thanks a lot! Dislike
