The whole album is a masterpiece, great songs and wonderful harmonies, a joyous album.
This album is a GREAT one! The vocals are heavenly. There is a number of perfectly crafted songs on here. The whole thing is worth a sit down and listen all the way thru in one go. There is an elliptical 'story' across the whole record that's basically a sort of idealized growing up tale and was meant to be one of those things of a time like you said, for an audience, but so well done that it also grows on you with time. It's a very sweet, and intended, idealized lovestory. People have a great deal of fondness for it. I've known 20-something women from the 60's, 70's 80's, 90's and 00's who adored this record. It definitely has a staying power. My favorite is 'This Will Be Our Year'. But 'A Rose For Emily' is also very sweet, tender.

The Zombies have sadly been overlooked by many and kind of been underrated over time, but "Odessey & Oracle" is a truly outstanding album. Recommend that you listen to "Care of Cell 44", "Beechwood Park", "Hung Up On A Dream" and "This Will Be Our Year" from this record to get more of the feel of what the band was about at this time. In his prime Colin Blunstone remains as one of the best rock vocalists ever. Really enjoying your discoveries guys!

Colin Blunstone is the singer .Rod Argent on keys went on to form Argent in70s . Time of the Season is indeed the Zombies

"Brief candle" is from Shakespeare's MACBETH, after he hears that his guilt-stricken wife has died:
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow / Creeps in its petty pace from day to day / To the last syllable of recorded time / And all our yesterdays have lighted fools / The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! / Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player / Who struts and frets his hour upon the stage / And then is heard no more. It is a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury / Signifying nothing!"
I had to memorize that in college, and it comes in handy whenever the occasion calls for somebody to wax eloquent.

The phrase brief candles is taken from Shakespeare's Macbeth - meaning we are just candles about to be be snuffed out, so recognise your time is short :(
Chuck D is on record as this song being from his favourite all time album, and the Zombies have liked him and Public Enemy back :)

Their early hit She's Not There, remains the quintessential Zombies & a British Invasion essential. Actually a 60's essential. It's kept it's extreme cool many decades later. I'd also rank Santana's version of it on the Moonflower album, one of the top 50 cover songs of all time. Also has aged very well.

Whoa, excellent choice Melissa. I love this song and album, and yes 'Time of the Season' is on this one. If I remember correctly they were about to break up, and maybe did, after releasing this album. The first single didn't hit and album sales were slow until 'Season' hit. Was expecting the 'Eleanor Rigby' comparison. There is a 40th anniversary performance of this whole album which is worth watching. Thanks.

One of those beautifully crafted, remarkably inspired albums, that was never supposed to happen given that The Zombies were breaking up - kind of like The Beatles "Abbey Road". You are correct that "Time of the Season" is a Zombies song, it is the last song on this same album. It has been ranked at no. 100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Not my favorite from the Zombies. Time of the Season, She's Not There and Tell Her No are more classically Zombies songs, in my humble opinion.
Agreed, but I think this tune works a lot better in the context of the full album.
I would flip that around and say that "Brief Candles" is more "classically Zombies" simply because it is in a style that appears on both their two albums. Whereas the psychedelic "Time of the Season" is more distinct from the other songs - makes sense that it ended up being a single (but that was almost an accident, being released 2 years later than the album). The oddity was that the record company didn't see it as a single and chose "Care Of Cell 44" as the first single, and "Friends of Mine" as the 2nd one. "Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)" was released as a single in the US. None of these caught on.
There's elements of the soft, contemplative, "hymn-like" sound of Brief Candles in earlier tracks like The Way I Feel Inside, Nothing's Changed, Imagine The Swan, Whenever You're Ready.
Every Zombies' song is a masterpiece. Give them all a listen
