I did something close to this when I got fitted. I asked the fitter to not tell me shaft flex or brand name during my fitting. It was a great experience and ended up purchasing the Callaway Rouge X irons regular flex, one degree flat. Love them, and love the time spent hitting every brand in the store. Great video!
Mid handicap here. I've played everything from super game improvement irons to blades, all with a variety of shafts including my current x100 amts. My scores only fluctuate based on keeping my drives in bounds and not chunking chips. If I can do that and make a few puts I can shoot in the 70's. What irons are in my bag make very little difference.
Was custom fit this year into a combo set of Mizuno MP18-SC 6-P and MMC 4 & 5 iron with PX6.5 shafts. I’m a 50 yr old 7 hcp with 90-92 mph swing speed with 6 iron. Mizuno DNA recommended PX6.5, KBS Tour X, and DG S300 as top 3. Didn’t think I had enough speed for PX6.5 but it won on strike location and dispersion, especially the left miss.
I can’t wait to get fitted for some clubs one day, hopefully by then get my iron striking back to where it used to be. I think blades are in order for feed back and control, I’ll take the good shots with the bad any day to have a full set of blades in the bag lol. Great video you two always like seeing mark test blades, gives me hope to hit a set in the future!!!!
I am an 18 handicap and have played Mizuno MP5 blades (stiff shaft) for the last 3 years. My set is 5-PW in the MP5s, and then hybrids instead of the 3 and 4 irons. They feel different than game improvement irons, better on good hits, worse on bad hits. But the results are no different. I was down to 16 at one point with them. I like that I can feel bad shots more with the blades. Chunky irons tend to mask the feel, and its hard to tell when you just slightly miss the center. With blades, even the tiniest miss hit and it doesnt feel pure. Its like a training aid...you really feel it. I will play the MP5s until they turn to rust. The look, feel and sound great. Dont let the game-improvement marketing nonsense stop you from trying blades. Pretty much any golfer could play bladed irons.
My thought in deed. Born in the 80’s all the hand me down irons as a kid were blades and they thought me how to hit a golf ball. However you can’t hit every ball perfect if so you would be out marking the big bucks playing golf for a living on the PGA.
I cannot use stiff shafts anymore. The old Wilson Gear effect set had steel stiff shafts with forgiving cavity back irons. They worked well for me back in the early 80’s. I even could hit the Gear effect one iron, but not anymore!! ;) ;) Cheers! That’s for sharing.
I’m an 18 handicap and play x stiff c tapers in my cobra MB’s 2-PW. Catch hit a wood to save my life but I’m ok with irons. Can’t bare the look of chunky clubs. I like a scary club because it makes me concentrate more and they are so much more satisfying when they go well. I started golf late so my swing is short and a bit stiff so the x flex means I can whack them ball as hard as I like with my ‘hit not swing’ technique. So of it is down to what looks and feels right for you in my opinion.
I gotta say Mark that follow through is looking really good... up on your toe and not so flat footed as before..You show up at my course with that swing and state your off 14..well lets just say there will be a lot of eye rolls... cheers bro
I get asked this thought often. My friends always ask why I don't play blades in an x shaft since I can hit them at the range. I always say range on mat far different from having 1 shot at course.
Mark was a good sport to give those clubs a try! The heads probably weren’t as bad a fit for him as the shafts were. I know he loves blades and would like nothing more than to play them if he could! Wouldn’t we all? I have the same AMT X100 Shaft in my 4i & 5i! I love them. If I were to get the MP-20 SELs it’s very possible, maybe even likely, that they’d fit me into them. I’m seriously considering getting fit again for my irons because my swing has changed a lot since I got fit a year ago. My swing is smoother now, and I no longer pull down hard from the top like I once did thanks to James. So I don’t feel like I need 130-125g shafts to smooth out my swing anymore. The progressive AMT shafts could theoretically suit my better as I do like heavier shafts in the short irons. I just shot my low round today (73). so I don’t know if now is the time to be messing with my iron shafts, though! 😀😀😀
Had Project X 6.0 in my previous Taylormade Rac MB's. When fitted for my P730's, suggestion was to go to 6.5, but found that my ball flight was a little high and faded. Then tried S300 to compare with 6.5 and found ball flight much better. Also found that newer blades are slightly stronger lofted yet slightly more forgiving, so S300 brought the P730's back to where I felt comfortable.
I'm a mid handicapper and I use Srixon 965 irons with a stiff shaft. I switched to the blades last year after using Cobra Bio Cells (CB) I hit the ball further, straighter and can draw/fade the ball much better with the blades. I now shoot in the Los 80's instead of the high 80's low 90's. I guess what I'm getting at is, don't be afraid to try a blade. You just might play better.
I currently play the MP18SC irons with Dynamic Gold X100's. Similar to you James, I don't have ridiculous speed but my misses tend to go left. My standard shot is a very high launch, high spin right to left draw. Irons have been fitted as have all the clubs in my bag based on my desire to see a slightly lower ball flight and give me the ability to hit a little squeeze fade when needed. I am possibly looking to go a little lighter in the next year or so as I am a senior golfer (aged 55) and currently play of a handicap of +1.
I played cobra amp cell pro irons for 5 years stiff shaft just swapped to 2018 cobra mb irons 3-pw extra stiff play off 12 hit them consistently well was impressed with mark considering he plays with those pings think his distances with your blades from 6-4 iron would only be 170-180 yards
Very interesting video. Not throwing any shade on Mark, but I would love to see some mid handicap testing with someone a little younger. I’m currently a 15 with 120 mph head speed on driver but spray it all over the place.
I play off 12 just bought mizuno mp20s the dna fit me in kbs s taper x stiff 130 shafts. Not got super quick swing speed but have a big overswing and hit a high ball with lots of spin.
I’m a mid handicap golfer and I really like the new MP 20’s HMB model throughout the set. In your opinion do you think someone in that category could play that model.
David Lewis -Got fitted for exactly the same shafts in my 919 tours ,my problem is the left miss too .I think the c taper light x feels smoother than the oldTrue Temper s 300 I have used for years .
My son hits MP18 blades ,down to 3 with a driving iron. They are very responsive ,but if you're putting in range and course hours you get control ,with the ability to pull out low punch cut or fade from behind or under trees. Also to play to favoured sides of greens and fairways. Of course you need to get that control ,but if you're looking to get from 6 to scratch ,you cannot just rely on just having a straight shot. Modern irons are a light year away from the unplayable leaf blades I used in the 70's.
I'll put my CV in now for the upcoming mid handicap tester position. Marks not going to be mid handicap for long!! And as much as I like Ping....Mizuno every time. Fitted for the JPX919 Hot metal just need to save up for them now 😂😂
Goes to show you how important fittings are. I have a friend who is a 16 handicapper, flies a 3 wood 285 yards uses Project X 7.0 (Rory Shafts) just to help keep the ball on the planet....just don’t ask about the putting! 😂
If you think the 6 iron is small, i've got an old Macgregor Jack Nicklaus Muirfield 2 Iron and that's scary tiny, can't remember what shafts in it though as i bought it in 1983
I play x stiffs with lots of loft because i deloft all irons....crazy stuff. when i used GI irons since I'm low spin the ball would carry there hot as heck....there wasnt a green i could hit with them.
Did Mark subtle troll you James? Lol, after you flexed on him with your X100's he comes back with the "well I don't know if these blades are all that much smaller...." haha XD
I got to +4 with R True Temper Dynamic Gold in Mr FG 17 Wilson Tour Blades and 100 comp Titleiet tour balata. Hard balls are a shaft killers these days. Try some XS Graphites with Mark. Bet he changes his results and view.
Got a decent second hand set of MP-69's recently......love the feel when flushed, but the main difference is the accuracy and the dispersion is far tighter than game improvement irons.
I'm a 14hcp maybe give Mark a match if I ever get Huddersfield booked interesting to see differences of same handicap I play Jpx 900 Hot metal KBS tour shaft 4 to pw think I need stiff in next fitting but happy at the minute
James, this is good information, just a little curious, to put someone in X-Stiff would depend on the swing speed, rather then the handicap? Just curious as a 15 handicap in X-Stiff shafts since I have started playing. Even after being fit, they put me in X-Stiff. But, just recently purchased the Mizuno MP 67 and it is in S300, but haven’t had a chance to game them, have it them and will definitely have to change out the S300. Any ideas on how to ensure it is the right shaft.
So James can you tell me what the white stickers/dots are for? I’ve asked Rick Shiels, Peter Finch and Mark Crossfield before (I think) and nobody has ever replied, be the first hey.
Mark has a very nice looking swing, and i am guessing he plays more than once a week, and practices also. He has had lessons , he has also had a professional fitting for his clubs.I wonder how many shots has he cut from his handicap in the last year ?
@@JamesRobinsonGolf I reckon Mark is either playing from the wrong tee box, or he never lays up and is always stretching his 2nd shot to attempt to get GIR. What's is his course management like ?
They way I look at irons is blades low launch high spin game improvement high launch low spin. Providing you can strike the ball well enough choose what matches your eye in looks and ball flight.
I find that it takes me 30-50 swings to get used to a different shaft. After that it doesn't make much difference. Maybe you should let Mark play with your irons for a week and then see how he does.
What about can a mid handicap golfer use extra stiff driver and fairways. As I'm gaming x-stiff driver, fairway, 2 iron then stiff 4-pw and 52, 58 degree wedges. Not sure wither to go, x-stiff with rest of bag
Handicap has nothing to do with what flex shaft you use ,I know plenty of people that are higher handicaps that swing a 6 iron over 90 mph ,thats why fitting is important ,It's no big deal someone using x flex if thats what they are fitted for and need the stability ,same with graphite driver shafts ,its all about getting in the ball park area ,some x shafts feel softer than some stiff shafts ,kick points and torque will give different feelings . One club companies stiff is another companies x .
First video I’ve seen on this channel. And my first impression was if this is an educational video on helping people with there game, they are getting the wrong impression drilled into there head because you totally made it out like if your not hitting xs blades your not worthy enough to play the great game of golf. Also everything is better that you have even down to the bag. Not every body has your same opinion. So great job on the countless people who just went out and spent tons of cash on something they are going to hate all because they think they will be made fun of. What a joke
@@fairwayray x100 is stiffer tipped than rifle 6.5. X200s and X300s are no stiffer than X100s, they are just heavier. theyre out of spec X100s that have been sorted by weight.
That sim seems to record club head speed rather high doesn’t it? In relation to gcq or trackman doesn’t look like he’s swinging 6 iron near 90mph that’s not far off tour average which he in no offence isn’t close too
Would love to see results on a video fitting a 20+ handicap player for irons? Someone who’s not brand new to golf but plays regularly? Mark the midhandicapper is getting too good with that ball striking! 😂😂😂
No way no how would I hit your blades with X stiff steal shaft. My body would be hurting for 3-5 days. I would love to try them in soft step regular with Graphite shafts.
You can play whatever you want , it depends if you can get the most out of the set up , if you can consistently hit the ball out of the middle you can use blades if your not getting out the middle more often than not you will be Losing distance , you will however learn faster how to get the middle with blades , reg stiff or x stiff depends on feel and how you load the shaft , fast tempo o r smooth , hitter or swinger , you have to like the look of what your using , you need to have confidence over the ball , I don’t believe there is a handicap for blades I started playing blades and still use them , your swing doesn’t have to be perfect like a tour pro just consistent and repeatable .
Joe Wilkes - I’m sorry but show me one study or one reputable golf professional that agrees that blades will help you learn to hit the middle of the clubface. The vast majority of non professional golfers can’t hit the sweet spot of their putter with consistency and they definitely don’t have the skill level to hit their irons dead solid perfect every time.
Sloe , blades force you to concentrate on finding the middle or you are punished with distance and jarred hands , gi clubs hide poor striking and because the results are negligible , people just carry on without fixing the underlying problems of poor contact , this was my point , blades generically have no help , the spin rates are more consistent therefore distance is more consistent , golf is a game of distance accuracy , I understand your point also, clearly blades aren’t going to be for everyone , I do believe you need to have some speed to play them . I play 2 iron 3 and 4 down adding a 2 hybrid for longer par 5 s , but I have enough speed to get them airborne and stop the 3 iron on 220 yard par 3s .
Joe Wilkes - I understand your theory, I’m wondering how you came up with it? Game improvement irons don’t hide bad ball striking, they simply provide a more acceptable miss. You still know when you miss it. Even with the biggest ugliest GI iron, you still know what solid feels like. I’ve played enough competitive golf with blades to know they aren’t for everybody. I don’t play or practice daily like used to so a little more forgiveness is welcome. Perfect technique was never the goal anyway. The goal is getting that silly ball in that stupid hole.
Sloe exactly right mate exceptable misses , I think the average golfer just accepts that , be it lack of practice or time , my theory was born more out of frustration and determination to get better , blistered fingers from hitting thousands of balls , a few lessons and trying to emulate greg Norman , seve , Freddy couples that effortless looking swing 🤣🤣
@@Jjwalways70 Dead right mate ,if game improvement irons were that great the average male handicap would be a lot different than it was 30 years ago ,and it isn't .When I started playing golf the pro told me not to buy a driver for at least the first year ,the driver is the result of more poor scores than any other club ,but the golf companies don't want you to know that as the want the average guy to keep forking out £400.00 + every other year as its there one big mark up selling point ,they don't give a f**k about you're handicap ,thats why they keep putting longer shafts in them .
@James you need to keep a micro fiber towel in that bag and polish up those irons. It's a travesty to see such beautiful clubs with all those finger prints and smears on them. :)
why do people care so much about x-stiff steel irons?? try a set of new graphites. that is the way forwards! they are lighter (which means faster) and just as stiff (if not stiffer with modern graphite tech) so really they are just better right ??!! at least for the majority of us... plus they feel so much nicer to swing- but that is purely my opinion. in another generations time people will wonder why we we still using steel in 2019.
So sorry Mark that your trusted teacher/friend made you suffer through hitting his telephone poles. I hope it was fun for you, because I would have given in.
What’s the point of this? Clubs fitted for a person vs random clubs, of course there will be dispersion difference, however all things being equal blades are more forgiving and consistent irons particularly the distance. The professionals don’t use blades because they are less forgiving, precisely the opposite. This myth about blades as being unforgiving needs to go.
thank you for this comment, i feel blades do exactly what you said more loft more forgiveness, ppl that cant play blades are those with sub avg. swing speeds you need speed to get a ball to launch(duh). i.e. forgiving clubs put weight low and to the back hence why Mark cant hit his irons. Two things need to stop in this golf industry: 1. Ppl who play blades, shut up about playing blades no one cares because these are the same ppl that after a shot say "Hey that was a [insert number of club] number on club only matters to the person using it. 2. Stop saying they cant play blades if they haven't even hit them, following the stereo type of "Blades are unforgiving". If you slice a bladed iron, you will do the same with a game improvement iron only difference is that its gonna go a mile further offline. Last thing...Mark isn't playing super forgiving game improvement irons. Sorry for the long post
mantisSbcc The bad shots with game improvement irons tend to be worse, the only exception I can think of right this second is topped straight shots, one will get more distance out of game improvement clubs. Game improvement clubs are only made for distance, they are virtually impossible to shape ball with. They are very difficult to play with. The clubs Mark is using are very good. They replaced i200 , which were used by a few tour professionals.
@@mantisSbcc Nail hit firmly on the head mate ,muscle backs are fine for anyone with a decent swing speed ,plus you get traditional lofts so the ball launches easier ,stops better etc. Getting fed up with these videos showing 28 degree irons with a 7 stamped on the bottom with some moron telling you its got speed foam in it or tungsten at the bottom so thats why it goes far ,its total rubbish .
I think anyone that plays blades is just giving away shots.......because you will have a few bad shots per round. If you aren't on tour don't play blades unless you are playing me......I'll take your bad shots and that will help me gain the advantage.
It's been proven shafts make absolutely no difference. It's all about feel. And shaft manufacturers convincing you there shaft will make you play better

Mark has a very nice looking swing, and i am guessing he plays more than once a week, and practices also. He has had lessons , he has also had a professional fitting for his clubs.I wonder how many shots has he cut from his handicap in the last year ?
None mate. Lol but we are working on it!
@@JamesRobinsonGolf
I reckon Mark is either playing from the wrong tee box, or he never lays up and is always stretching his 2nd shot to attempt to get GIR.
What's is his course management like ?
Great video - What is the brand of golf mat you're using?
What shaft are you using mark? Nippon ns pro 120 or 105?
They way I look at irons is blades low launch high spin game improvement high launch low spin. Providing you can strike the ball well enough choose what matches your eye in looks and ball flight.
If those ball flights are right then I need some blades.
If he is 14 with that swing then he needs to start putting proper cards in and often 🧐🧐🧐
Don’t forget shaft weight plays a part not just flex, how you load the shaft not always about speed.
imagine coming off hickory shafts and finding mp20's with x100 shafts in that old canvas bag--then find the modern golf ball as well.
Mark has got the bemused look at a club down to a tee for the thumbnails!
So I have a question, mark is a 14 handicap.....is that a 9 or 18 hole handicap for a mid handicap?
First video I’ve seen on this channel. And my first impression was if this is an educational video on helping people with there game, they are getting the wrong impression drilled into there head because you totally made it out like if your not hitting xs blades your not worthy enough to play the great game of golf. Also everything is better that you have even down to the bag. Not every body has your same opinion. So great job on the countless people who just went out and spent tons of cash on something they are going to hate all because they think they will be made fun of. What a joke
x100 is the softest extra stiff shaft you can get. Just above a stiff.
Errr.....what? its one of the most if not THE most tip stiff shafts
@@jamesdenny5078 how about the x200 or the x300?
or the rifle 6.5
@@fairwayray x100 is stiffer tipped than rifle 6.5. X200s and X300s are no stiffer than X100s, they are just heavier. theyre out of spec X100s that have been sorted by weight.
@@jamesdenny5078 Thank you for clearing that up.
That sim seems to record club head speed rather high doesn’t it? In relation to gcq or trackman doesn’t look like he’s swinging 6 iron near 90mph that’s not far off tour average which he in no offence isn’t close too
James why dont you and Mark get on the course and have some fun shot shaping.
Mark has been 14 for ever. Full new bag of fitted clubs, lessons and tips from pro’s, what’s going wrong??
He enjoys his golf Tim. Not everyone’s goal is to get to scratch?
Come on James set your stall out and get him to single figures, his swing looks great. It could be a whole new series
R-80 graphite bubble shaft . Maybe someday I get fitted
What’s Mark’s swing speed, swinging stiffer shafts requires faster swing speeds...
Not enough lol
😂😂😂😂
So do blades.
I'd take the i210's, like Westy or Hatton. Actually, I did already.
you’re the best golf youtuber out there right now.. always with very useful content for low mid and high handicappers.. love the content!
Would love to see results on a video fitting a 20+ handicap player for irons? Someone who’s not brand new to golf but plays regularly?
Mark the midhandicapper is getting too good with that ball striking! 😂😂😂
Filming a fitting tomorrow at Mizuno for our beginner series :)
@@JamesRobinsonGolf look forward to seeing the beginner one. Subscribed for notifications thanks.
I watched TXG fit an 8 handicapper (I think) the other day - was really interesting because he wasn’t a pro with a robot swing!
isnt the weight to keep you from over swinging? Such as your pull shot James, to me it always looks like your over swinging.
You got a lesson from MC? would be interesting to see that too :)
No way no how would I hit your blades with X stiff steal shaft. My body would be hurting for 3-5 days. I would love to try them in soft step regular with Graphite shafts.
Raw, powerful speed James??
😉
I pratice with blades so shen i play my regulars so much easier
Let’s see a blind test and I did a Calloway fitting
Ok I am calling DIBS on Mark's Pings when he gets Mizuno irons
The shafts in the shorter irons could be managed but in anything above a 8 would be a unplayable
Too much for you, James. What is your swing speed? Lower end of XS, just.
@James you need to keep a micro fiber towel in that bag and polish up those irons. It's a travesty to see such beautiful clubs with all those finger prints and smears on them. :)
Fair point! Haha I was gutted when editing and they where smudged!
I’d take marks irons over james
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 well done Mark
Ouch! Blades and an X Shaft.
He's got a tidy swing for a 14 handicap James.
why do people care so much about x-stiff steel irons??
try a set of new graphites. that is the way forwards! they are lighter (which means faster) and just as stiff (if not stiffer with modern graphite tech) so really they are just better right ??!! at least for the majority of us...
plus they feel so much nicer to swing- but that is purely my opinion. in another generations time people will wonder why we we still using steel in 2019.
In the end, flex means nothing, its all about the weight and how you time it.
Seems to indicate that combination sets are probably the best way to go for a mid handicapper but why not combination shafts as well?
A proper fitting is the ONLY way to tell if you should game a certain setup..
So sorry Mark that your trusted teacher/friend made you suffer through hitting his telephone poles. I hope it was fun for you, because I would have given in.
Yes blind test
I'd use marks irons everyday, then James irons to lay next to me in bed and gaze at 😂
I think anyone that plays blades is just giving away shots.......because you will have a few bad shots per round. If you aren't on tour don't play blades unless you are playing me......I'll take your bad shots and that will help me gain the advantage.
Lot of fades for Mark.
It's been proven shafts make absolutely no difference. It's all about feel. And shaft manufacturers convincing you there shaft will make you play better
That puffa jacket makes you look like you've been on the pies.
No mate, the fact I’ve been on the pies makes me look like I’ve been on the pies 😂 thanks though
