  • Are you going to geology field camp and are overwhelmed with the process of preparation? I was in the same boat, even though I had a list of the required and suggested items. I didn't know exactly what items would be best for me. I wanted to share the items that helped me the most in my experience. This also can apply to any time you're going to do field work as anyone who works in the field for their job or school - aka: geologist (obviously), environmental scientist, biologist, ecologist, etc... orrrrr you just like to go camping and are curious about some helpful items! Whichever one of these may or may not apply to you, I hope you get something out of this video and share it with anyone else who may benefit from it. I've shared links below to the items I mentioned in the video.
Preparing for field camp can be overwhelming and expensive, so I suggest:
    1. Start early by writing a list and buying the bigger items (or asking for them as gifts if you are lucky enough to have generous friends and family like I was)
    2. Bookmark the items you plan on buying and wait for sales to pop up. I got my hiking boots on sale for around $70, down from over $150. Another good reason to start early! There are also a few items you can afford to get a cheaper version of, like a water bladder (I borrowed mine from someone), hydroflask (get at Marshall's or another discounted store, or get a similar brand item), etc. You just have to get creative!
    3. APPLY TO SCHOLARSHIPS!!!! I received a scholarship that made it possible for me to buy a lot of my field camp gear and I am insanely grateful for that. I almost didn't apply to any because I thought I wouldn't get them. I was wrong and you probably are too, so apply apply apply! :)
And lastly, if your in person field camp was cancelled this year because of the pandemic, I'm super sorry about that and I hope you get to have the amazing field work experience soon!
P.S. In the video I talk about setting up the hammock around a tree(s). ONLY do this where you know you are permitted to do so. A lot of the time in certain protected natural areas you can't use hammocks on the trees because it'll damage them. So just be aware of the regulations where you're camping.

Thanks so much for making this video! I'm from Alaska and have grown up camping and all that, but I suspect field camp is a bit different than recreational camping. Either way, while I'm not sure exactly what I'll need for field camp at this time, you gave me a good start for some potential must haves like a fanny pack! (Fanny packs are fashion no-no's in AK unless you're pretending to be a tourist. I NEVER would have thought to buy one for field camp, but it makes SO much sense!)

Thank you very much for these advices. I will buy water bladders, inflatable pillow, lamp, and the hip pack.
    They would be really useful.
I get to know the nature by taking photos and seldom I camp.
I sometimes go the wetlands to do so.
I can recommend you rubber boots, which would be useful if the terrain is wet and muddy. Deeper mud can cover your hiking boots and even your legs. :)
Muckboots are well-known. I have Solognac for colder seasons and Aigle for spring and summer.
If you go to a muddier place or wetland, a stick is always useful. Not only to measure depth but it makes walking easier. :)

You all should add this to your list for sure:
    Plateau Design field pouch.
Rite in the Rain pencil, (qty 2).
6” Wescott Engineers’ Protractor (qty 2)

    Great Video!
I'm here in Colorado just starting my geology major. I am hoping of getting my masters in economic geology, then specialize in Lithium!
What are you doing with you career?
I also love the geology community, we all are a bit extra, and that's okay lmao.
FYI every knot in a line basically cuts the strength in half, so maybe learn something like a prusik knot. My idea ( I haven't tried this with any weight. Tie a prusik around your line on each side, then add a clip on each side of the line that is running through the prusik knots. All you would have to do is clip the line to the prusik knot, then pull it tight for both sides. Just an idea?

@@Geobeck Omg thanks for replying! :) I had a question, are leggings are a viable option for field camp?

    • @Geobeck
      @Geobeck  3 роки тому +1

@@Izzy-iu5ei hmm I guess it depends on the type of leggings or the climate of the area you’ll be doing field work in. I brought breathable athletic leggings to use as layers under my field pants on cooler days, but I mostly stuck with my field pants because of many reasons (cacti, sliding or falling or sitting on sharp rocks, breathability, and horse flies - the one day I wore leggings for field work I got sooo many horse fly bites because they can bite right through the leggings 😅). Also the pants have pockets a lot of the time which I found useful as well. I still suggest bringing leggings to use as layers or as something to wear on off-days, but wouldn’t suggest them as your main field work go-to!

Going to a field camp for two months in Utah , Idaho and Montana. Thanks for the video. Brunton compass will be my nightmare to figure out the strike and dip. Lost hobbits in Misty Mountains.

That’s amazing !! The traveling field camps are great options. You get to see a lot of different stuff which is amazing. Youll do great! If you’ve already taken a structural geology class before you go that is super helpful - but if not you’ll get the hang of taking strike and dips after the first few days. It can be really confusing at first but it just takes practice! Have a great time at field camp🤓

@@Geobeck Thank you Beck, I find geologists to be very optimistic people. I took a structure about a year ago. I know how to measure a strike and dip but I guess I am just scared of graduating and being unemployed lol. Thank you for the video again! Stay positive:)

Easy way is to learn the right hand rule. Once you’re 100% proficient at using the Brunton, put it in your backpack and just use the app Field Move Clino. It takes a strike / dip in like one second. You can Google the research to see it’s accuracy on new phones is as good as a Brunton. Just make sure your professors don’t see you using it on all your contacts to take measure your data. The best part is it records the GPS location of each measurement so it feels like million times better than the old way. Plus you can add photos of the contact. Just make sure to back up your data every night to paper/ online / another phone. ;) when you’re done you can export it as a Google Earth .KML and an Excel file spreadsheet.
