  • If you want some insight into the Russian mindset, try the works of Svetlana Alexievich, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature last year. Her new book, Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets, has just been published in English. It is an exploration of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the psychological effects of that event on the people who witnessed it. She's been speaking to Gabriel Gatehouse.
Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

I think a lot of you have watched a short UA-cam clip and haven't read the 700 page book (Second hand time) she didn't write the book she edited it, the Russian people wrote the book and I defy any of you to pontificate about their lived experience. Why she is wonderful is because she took the time to listen when so many others didn't.

This woman is amazing! People seem to forget what Soviet Union was like, so she has to remind you.

Alekseievich's polyphonic work seems too monotonous when it's shown like a one sided anti Russia speech like in this video, it's almost an insult to the author's intention

I don't read it as anti Russian, I read it as pro humanity and anti Soviet, cult etc. Cults are cults wherever they are..... This book is about Humanity and our propensities to believe in a better world even when we are being lied to

I finished reading Chernobyl Prayer a week ago. Still not able to get over the "radiation burns on the brain". I re-read some of the stories everyday even though I'm already at the next book. Devastatingly beautiful. Especially the first and the last stories. Only regret -- I should have found Her book earlier. In complete awe...

this woman said so much rubbish during 3 minutes it's just amazing. Who was in camp, who believed, who pretended? Nobody cared nobody, people just lived , did see these children from USSR s life in in "camp" from this "movie"? I've been in UK several times, on the whole lived more than 5 years, it s all the same, poor ve got less money, rich s more, who is happy enjoy his life, who isn't don't, and all this so called"democracy" and verbal rubbish is just about money.

The divide between the rich and poor has increased in the UK since Margret Thatcher was prime minister the same can be said for America since Regan. The politicians have engineered the system so that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. But I don't think Russia is any different there are super rich people and many poor people living in Russia as well.

@@tomlinid Yes, that is very true... there is NO PERFECT country in the world... BUT, a fair or lets says a *fair-er* society is the one where the middle is largest and the extremes (extremely poor and extremely rich) are lowest... Not sure about how UK fairs in terms of the middle class and the extremes, but in US things are pretty damn shitty... and in Russia things are improving... even with all the fucking sanctions up the wazoo Russian people are still WAY BETTER off in general/on average than most people in US... in US people cant survive without a job and there are more slave-wage jobs that dont provide enough income simply to break-even and pay all the basic necessities...not to mention that everyone has debt up the ass...
Completely different story in Russia... there is 1 very important metric that can be looked at, and that is OWNER occupied housing... meaning people living RENT-FREE... Here is the data: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_home_ownership_rate
Why is this important??? Well i think everyone will agree that housing/living costs are a LOT cheaper when you live in house/apartment that you OWN, rather than RENT or paying a mortgage... its simple math...
I have friends in Russia and some other Eastern European countries where cost of living is NOT THAT HIGH if you own your place of living (house/apartment)... Food costs are also a LOT cheaper in Russia and Eastern Europe... plus if you live in a private house, EVERYONE has some level of homestead, either growing simple vegetables and staples like tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, leafy greens, etc... almost YEAR ROUND... what does that mean, well you simply NEED to spend a LOT LESS money on purchasing food since a LOT is produced by you...and you only spend on foods and produce you cant grow or choose not to grow...
Also, maintenance costs and energy costs are a LOT cheaper too... so that lowers your NEED to make more money... Anyway, long story short, many of my friends dont worry too much when they get laid off or fired or loose their employment income... WHY...simply because you dont need a lot of money to meet your basic living needs like shelter, food, etc... if you dont go out to fancy restaurants/clubs/gamble/or drink a LOT... you dont need a lot of money to afford all the necessities... Some of my friends can easily NOT work for 3-4 months and still pay all their bills... some have car loans or some other loans and they still can afford to be unemployed without much worry for 2 months at least... Another important thing to know is that with all the BS that the Western propaganda tells the world about how bad Russia is, they neglect to mention that Russians have a LOT more savings than Americans or Brits, as a % of their wages... What that means is that Russians are able to afford to pay their living expenses AND have money left over for fun/entertainment or to put away for some future expenses... In US its a completely different story, everyone has debt, either credit cards or loans or both... you simply CANT survive without a credit card...
      So, who is better off???

More Anti-Russian propaganda. That's why she got the Nobel Prize. This is all political. It has nothing to do with being a talented writer.

When you read the book you will understand that your comment is not correct. The complexity of Events, people and attitudes make her work with the inside perspective outstanding. Same goes for her book ww2 the war has no womanly face.
