Nick Biesterfeld Songs are one of those things that can hold meaning for many different people, but it sounds like he's saying he's made a few mistakes with someone that he loves. But he's "only as bad as the maker who made me" Therefore for me it can be assumed that he's speaking about being only as guilty as God. He speaks about being innocent at one point but losing that with time, maybe due to past tragedies. "Needle for the user, the pain in your chest, the wicked man's rest" The only way he can feel okay is through the use of drugs, it's the only way he can finally get rest from the wickedness that either once consumed him or still does "The path in which I came" maybe taking wrong turns within life. To me the entire song lyrically speaks of a man who's turned from good and it's made him weaker and broken him with time, and with that it also broke his relationship.
Needle for the user, the pain in your chest Beggar and the chooser, the wicked man's rest I refer this section to some kind of drug consume. The needle is not just symbolic for the Needle in itself, but also represents that people decide to feel pain to make them feel better. The wicked man's rest seems to describe the feeling after the kick, the low in your Life. "I'm the beast and your the beast in me, the bitterness, the jealousy, the part of you that never sleeps. This one is a bit tricky. I pick it up as a selfconversation between the consumer of the drugs and his inner emotions. 'I'm the beast' (Represents his outer appearance) 'your the beast in me' (talks about his emotions, as they seem to be in us) The bitterness, the jealousy What you see is what you get from this sentence. He seems to be disappointed about his life, jealous of others, who have a job, a family and money. I believe it can be extremly frustrating to see your life going down the drain when others get better and better. Well, could be a criticism of modern capitalism. The part of you that never sleeps Physicly seen, body parts that never sleep are the organics. However, Passenger is way to smart to not put the listener on a riddle-journey. What also never sleeps is love. I dont mean sexual desire/attraction, I mean real love. And whoever witnessed real love knows, that you will forever wear it in you. Wether its a good or bad feeling is irrelevant. But looking in a long term at the song and my previous interpretation its probably the feeling of losing grip in your life after a disappointing lovestory. Which line also catched my attention is: "Patch over holes in my weakened heart, which angels hold, and devils pull apart...." Its about the addiction question: Stop or carry on? Angels say stop, devils represent "carry on" This also combines with "retrace the footprints, off the path from which i came" as he wants to roll back the years to when he had control over Life. Thats what i could make out over this amazingly deep and catchy song BUT REMEMBER: Your personal interpretation is the right one. There are no wrong interpretations. What you think is what you hear. Out of a couple of lines in this song i could think of so many different ways to interpret them. And thats what makes Mike unique.
