I see it pretty often in USTA league/tournament matches as well as in my daughter's high school matches. A lot of it has to do with how the sport (and the rules) are taught. I learned that tennis is a lifetime sport that teaches you many life lessons including honesty and integrity. I was taught that unless you are 100% sure that the ball is 100% out then you have to give your opponent the benefit of any doubt and play the ball as "in." Unfortunately, many people learn the game differently. The first time someone cheats me, I ask them "are you sure." Sometimes they're not and you can clarify the rule for them. I've had one or two people change their calls in these cases. The second time it happens, I ask "are you sure?" and if they say "yes" I ask: "you do realize that when a ball hits the line it's in, right?" This question has yet to work for me, but at least it lets them know I know what they're up to. The real cheaters often have a "go to" response generally falling into one of two camps: camp one will proceed to tell you "it was way out," while camp two show you with a little pinch of their fingers "just a little bit." At which point, my favorite line is "I'll hit it more in for you next time."
At this point, everyone can see by how much I've written how much this bugs me :) One problem is some of these guys are super fast, so hitting it "more in" just shrinks the court even more. Another problem is if the ball they call out was a clean winner then their call is effectively a two point switch (one less point for you, one more point for them). But for me the worst is game/set/match point. This is where the bad call has the most impact and where the craftiest cheaters really shine. They might even play out balls when they're up 40-love, but rip a nice deep return anywhere near the baseline on break point, and it's out. All day. Every day. And twice on Sundays.
Tennis is hard. I'm 55 now and still struggle with this stuff, but all I can say is nowadays I try to think of everything as "practice" and so when I get hooked, I remind myself "enjoy your practice, enjoy your practice." (and hit it more in next time :)

    1) start calling his shots that are clearly in (1 m inside or more) as OUT in a very calm way
    2) at each overhead opportunity aim for the head or balls of the opponent (don´t try to win the point)
    3) during changeover take from your bag a huge knife out and start polishing it while talking quietly to it (but in a way he can hear it) "...here we go again..."
    4) during changeover fake a call on your phone while saying:"...I´m afraid I´m going to break the probation period again..."
    5) occasionally talk to yourself so he can hear it:"...God...give me strength not to kill again..."
    Feel free to add 😁

I was a hardcore paintball player in high school and I remember facing a group of four cheaters who wore white paint jumpsuits at my local indoor field. The problem was that we were only allowed to use paintballs filled with white paint so these guys would wipe anytime you shot them and stay in the match. These guys were connected in a local gang and the indoor field was in the middle of the hood so the referees were too timid to demand they take off the white jumpsuits and play legit. My friend and I decided instead of getting frustrated to aim for the face masks as they can't wipe that and then we tore apart those cheaters round for round. I played with a phantom vsc which would be like the equivalent of a control racket and had fun countering their cheating through legit play.

I grew up knowing that tennis was one of the few "gentlemen sports" that existed. It was called that for a reason. I do my best to teach that to my girls. Besides, if you think a couple cheated calls cost you the match, then they were probably better than you anyways. Letting them get in your head means you lost the mental battle as well.

There is a difference between cheating and bad calls. As a roaming umpire for three years for official junior level tennis matches in Quebec, Canada, I have witnessed many bad calls (usually fast balls "painting" the lines) but I don't recall even one blatant cheating. But I,ve heard stories of COACHES telling their students to "cheat" at least one ball during a match. I don't believe kids to be natural cheaters but it would not surprise me at all that some of them get pressured to cheat either by their coaches or even their parents.

    • @germanslice

I was taught to call serves that miss past the lines as FAULT. And to call all the other shots that miss the lines by raising up the hand and signalling the OUT.
Then once you raise up the hand and call the ball out they cannot dispute the call if they had failed to call it and just stayed silent making n call then you get the right tomake the call for them.
And that stops all the hours of endless arguments overwhether the ball was in or out.
Because if the guy down the other end of the court fails to make the call of out and says silent, (makes no call on it) then the ball is in whether it was in or he saw it land out with his own eyes matters not, what matters is that the call is made and if its not made he forfiets the right to the other guy instead to make the call and he gets to decide if the ball is good or not, not the guy who had failed to make the call..
In tennis the calls must be audibly made along with using the hand signal. You can't just look with your eyes and say nothing when you see it land out and then later on try to argue line calls about it you can't do that.
You can't argue the point if you fail to make the line call and just stay silent. So you can't call for a let if you fail to make the call. The other guy gets the right to make the call for you if you don't do it yourself..

The reason juniors and college level players cheat so much is because they still think they might become a pro one day. As to cheating, I and my partner were cheated repeatedly at a senior Olympics regional. When the umpire was not there they kept calling our serves out. It was the last time I ever played senior Olympics. I will never play it again.

Agree with everything. Most importantly stay calm.Austrian League on clay many years. Most „cheaters“ were not even intentional, just wishful thinking. I negotiated for one time. Depending on the outcome, the second time I demanded a referee, as the home team has to have one ready for every match. End of problem. I was always open for a replay it it was really tricky. I feel that aside from crucial scores it is basically more important for most good players that their feel and eyes are good than winning or losing one point. Changes of course when money and ATP-points are on the line. The Challenge System really was a good invention for that.

So beside clay courts , your advise is to change your game style to be more passive (which may mean u lose) or call non existent court supervisors or if there was one they actually cant help u anyway cuz they cant watch multiple courts... Which the cheater knows.

Sorry, I disagree. Players should be good enough to play with more margin when needed, that doesn’t mean pushing or “changing your game style.” And against cheaters in the juniors this is going to be the best option most times, especially when officials aren’t consistently available. It may take more time to beat a cheater because you have to be more selective and patient, but it can be done.

Thanks for the video! It helps a lot to internalize that you can't do much when someone is cheating. But you're right about your perception in Germany. The game is very, very fair here and I experience that my opponent plays incorrectly in significantly less than 5% of all matches.

Recording a match could be a good weapon against cheaters. Of course, if it's a tournament, then it must be done through the tournament organizer. Besides, the frame speed must be high, as a format like 25p doesn't contain enough frames to determine precisely where a ball landed.
Recordings won't be a threat to the player during the match, but knowing that people can see your cheating afterwards, you may want to think twice before calling a ball out if it isn't out.

I play doubles in a rec league with mostly older players, and I'm continually surprised how few people know how to call lines. I try telling them the old remark "95% out is 100% in" but it doesn't seem to stick. No one is making money, but I feel that if a player at our low level hits a line particularly on a service, then they deserve the credit for that shot.
This past summer I was receiving in a doubles match, and usually the non-receiver calls the serves. First ball was on the outer service line, partner calls it out. I keep quiet. Second serve is in same place - partner calls it out and I say it's good and return it but opponents are confused. So, we call a let. Third serve is in the same place on the line, and we play the point till it ends. Afterwards, I ask my partner what they thought about those serves - they say the balls were all out. I tell partner they were all in and get angry glares the rest of the match.
Even in this "exercise" league, I've had plenty of partners that call out anything close to a line, instead of the other way around.

It is annoying in doubles when the player who has a good view of the ball hesitates, or even makes a call, and then this player’s partner, who is miles away and is looking across the line rather than down the line, calls the shot out. I believe that a sensible approach is if the player who is in a position to call the shot can’t decide then it should be called in.

From Germany: playing "Medenspiele" = team league tournaments. The umpire is the Captain of the guests team. He himself or any person he elects must enter the chair and act as umpire of the court, if one player strongly voted for getting a chairumpire. His duty starts after the last decision was made and one player is unhappy or feels cheated.
What we did in the past: we let a teammate watch closely and ask about if on the other side wrong calls were made or not. If yes - then we ask three times "you are sure, I saw the ball in" and if the cheating goes on stop claiming and try to get the overhand playing big targets well inside. If there will be a decisive ball (game/breakball or set e.g.) we call a ball "out" which is "in" by a meter or more. The other side will surely claim and maybe freak aut, maybe spectators and teammates will do so too.
BUT - the rule is I decide on my side and MY DECISION stands, even if the whole world is witnessing me cheating (and hopefully it does). Now the other guy will call for an umpire. He just lost a set or game and from the next point onwards there will be an umpire and everything is fine. And the guy on the other side is taught the lesson he deserves.

Best cheating is actually to say that a serve was good (while it was long), when you hit a risky return. You wait a split second if its a winner and then you go to next side. Almost no player will question his own serve or even on clay come to your side and check a mark.

I guess I don’t care that much. I don’t make a living at tennis….or bet on the outcome. I think some folks just have trouble calling the shot. I sometimes can’t call my own since I am focused on hitting the ball. I always give the opponent the call if I am not absolutely sure. I am too nice, if a ball is even close to the line I give my opponent the benefit of the doubt. When I play cheaters I bring them into the net and I will use lobs that bounce 3 to 4 inside the baseline, I will always throw in under hand serves, and use kick serves straight into their body. In the 40 plus years of myself playing tennis I only got into one fist fight on the court, a guy bounced the ball into my chest on the change over and I decked him straight away, and took him to the ground where I continued to fight him! The ref seen the entire thing go down and we both got disqualified, I was 19 years old at the time and I had enough of the guy trying to bully me because he was over 6’4 and a bigger guy. After the match he apologized to me and I did the same, we shook hands and I never seen him again! I don’t recommend fighting with anyone, but if someone is bullying you, you have to stand up for yourself! Great job on the video. I hate telling people I got into a fist fight over a tennis match, but people shouldn’t be bouncing balls into, I could have been injured and I could have had been hit the eye with the ball!

National Tour Open Tournaments sadly have an abundance of cheating. Its where I have experienced it the most. Not generally at the highest level do you witness this though there is a few exceptions but generally mid-high and certainly in critical matches in the middle level and nearly always with certain players from the lowest to middle level. I should generate a list of the cheaters that I have witnessed. Thankfully I have only experienced very few cheaters.
Juniors are the worst and a coach I know lost a match to a Junior cheater whose gutle$$ miniature sized 'father' did nothing to abate his childs 'behaviour'.
At the club and 'fixtures' level there is less of this but thats because no one puts much emphasis on non-tournament play
Clay resolves a lot of this but line call device would END IT ALL.

I have learned tennis in the cheating capital of the entire world.
First and foremost: if you advise players not to get emotional, then adapting to staying away from the lines is even worse.
My advice would be: don't adapt anything. Instead, question every single call to reassure the cheater that you are on the watch.
If he continues, then his next service game will be a break to love by double faults only, no matter where the ball actually lands.
Then you may ask him if he likes to continue on normal terms or if he likes to cheat on.

I have no problems cheating right back. These people only care about wins and losses and not about being better tennis players. They think winning more makes them better. The easiest way to get even is to cheat on break points: either on a close second serve as a double fault or to play defensively during a rally with lots of safe balls the cheater can't call out and extend the rally until you get a ball close enough to the line to call out and break their serve.

Most poor line calls happen inadvertently. Never encountered any systemic cheat ever

Have you ever played a tournament? More specifically a junior tournament that may count/help get a person into better school or league?

And wear a SwingVision one time and see how “inadvertently” wrong some of your friends calls really are. might not be intentional but it’s happening.

I play recreationally so noone is losing a fortune. But I use cameras and have seen everyone including myself call “out” on the balls that land inside the line, let alone clipping the line.
Cameras helped bring it to my attention that fast balls that look dodgy are 99% in.
As for tournaments with consequences - if parents regard that an important event then hire a few line judges or pay for an umpire to avoid such dodgy calls

"How to deal with cheaters"..... *Just don't!* Save yourself the stress! 😂
Tennis is a *game* . It's meant to be played *for fun/enjoyment* . If the person you're playing with has no integrity then don't waste your time

Portable line call technology would end all this for good. The technology exists but all this organisation$ leave it to each wolf to determine how much the other shall eat?!
Bizarre and you dont see this happen in other sports
