- Hi all. This is a video of me showing you my penny red collection which I won on an eBay auction. I’ve recently got into stamp collection and I don’t mind admitting that I’m no expert, but I’ve spent the last week getting don’t my research and learning a lot! I’ve started to sort my stamps and put them into separate collections.

If you can get hold of a copy of Vol 1 of Gibbons Specialized, it will really help your understanding of penny reds.
There was a series of books published by the Great Britain Philatelic Society entitled "Plating of the One Penny 1840-1864". Using the position of the individual check letters, it was possible to establish from which plate the stamp was printed.

I have a large collection of penny reds to catalogue and sort out onto pages. harder than the finished look so I know you put a lot of work into what you have done. good job

Question about the lettering of the stamps. If the top left stamp on the plate has letters AA in the top corners, what letters are on the bottom corners of the stamp?
For the "four corner letter" stamps:
Top left stamp on the plate has letters:
A A
A A
Bottom right stamp on the plate has letters:
L T
T L
The lower letters on each stamp show it's row and column position on the plate.
The upper letters on each stamp are the lower letters reversed.
12 stamps in each row (columns A through L) corresponded to 12 pennies in a shilling.
20 rows on each sheet (rows A through T) corresponded to 20 shillings in a pound.
So the 240 stamps on a sheet cost 1 pound.
When they did away with the stars and added the check letters at the top, I wonder why they reversed the order? No doubt they had very good reason(s) - it would just seem more natural to repeat the order of the lower two check letters I'd have thought...
