I am back in Nottingham!
After my last visit, it was clear that I missed the centre of the city. So I returned, this time with a local who said he would show me round.
It was great to return with someone who knew details about the place, who wasn't afraid to shy away from the problems that there are. There are a lot of boarded up shops and empty units. You cannot deny that. But it was also great to see the busy parts of the city.
Huge thanks to Rob for inviting me back.
Until Next Time,
W.T
#city #shopping #abandoned #notts #nottingham
Thanks so much for accepting my invite and coming back for a second look! I hope I didn't get any of my history wrong. Sorry to people who know better, if I did. It's been a long time (clearly) since GCSE History for me. Seeing you recognised on more than one occasion was a real buzz, this series clearly means a lot to people. And the best thing about UA-cam is that it's interactive and a comment like the one I left can inspire a second visit. I expect you will be getting a lot of invites in future! If you want to come back some day and do a 'cheapest houses in Nottingham' that might also be a good one and I'd be happy to help. Cheers, Rob @ForestFanTV
Yeah proper appreciate the invite and being able to give the city a fair look round 👍
@@wanderingturnip Great video, David. Delighted to meet you at the Olde Trip. Rob's parents
You Should be a tour guide, you're great.
Great video David, glad you gave Nottingham another look over, well done Rob for the tour guide, it's nice to see someone who is obviously passionate about their heritage and where they live, beautiful church 😊 it's amazing what a bit of tlc and sandblasting can do 😂 I love stained glass so the news that a video about it is going to be on made my day! Thanks David and Rob 👍💜
you did a great job showing the beauty of our city and explaining some of the history!! cheapest houses in Nottingham sounds like a fascinating topic, let me know if you want to do that with me sometime!
Boss idea to revisit with a local. I can imagine you're gonna have a lot of fans asking to do this in the future.
Rob seems like an absolute top bloke. What a source of knowledge too.
Love that you met at the left lion! Such a Nottingham thing.
His name is Agamemnon, after the Greek King of Mycenae in the Trojan war, and the right lion is called Menelaus after his brother, the King of Sparta and the husband of Helen of Troy.
Fantastic video as always.
Ah fellow man of culture I see.👍
I'm so glad someone else knows this classical Greek factoid about our Lions 🦁
Ah this is brilliant. I didn't know this about our lions! Thank you for teaching me :)
Its a great pity that they both appear so dirty. I remember the days when they were pristine and we had a Council House that was the envy of the country. Nottingham then lived up to the Title "Queen of the Midlands" Born and bred in The Old Meadows and still here .
One of the places you could have visited 15 mins walk out the city is greens windmill. 217 year old building with so much history.
@@royhardy407 I taught for a year at Trent Bridge School in the Meadows. I ran a cycling club and exhausted the boys so much that they did not have the energy to cause any trouble. I also taught at Lowdham Grange borstal institution.
A very eloquent and interesting co-host with you this week - thoroughly enjoyed it !
Don't go using word like eloqent! Kidding. :) Aint milk, brilliant!
Plenty more handsome men like that here too :)
First, I was so pleased to see you travelling to Nottingham my home town. IMO, your initial trip showed a true picture it just wasn’t complete. Nottingham is struggling and the high street near Broadmarsh is effectively dead. You clearly depicted that in the initial video. What was missing was Victoria Centre and Old Square Market both things you captured today that show there’s still a little life left on the high street. Top marks for coming back giving a complete picture. Keep up the great work.
Giving a visitors perspective and then a second with a local works, because not everyone visits somewhere with someone who knows everything so first impressions count. But coming back with a local gives a second side to the report, love this. Keep this coming
You need to visit Derby to see how wonderful Nottingham is 😁
Hahahahahahahahahaha
So true, I grew up in Nottingham and now live in Derby, for my sins...most of the time I go out I hop over to Nottingham anyway!
Grew up in Derbyshire, and Derby was 'the city' we went to. As an adult, I always think Derby squandered every opportunity to be another Nottingham/York. A flat, historic city, surrounded by gods country on all sides.
It has the bones for it. It's already a transport hub, basically every train ever goes through Derby station - but all for naught, because its all charity shops, barbers and shitty chain bars.
Living in Nottingham, I can go to 10 bars and not have been in a single chain pub/green king etc. In derby, that might be impossible.
I don't know what the Derby city council are smoking but it's some bad shit for the last 30 years.
Then the racists.... My god. Went there with some friends, never before seen the abuse they got for being 'foreigners'.
Born in Derby and moved to Nottingham when I was 10. Best move we ever made! I still work in Derby and it still has a place in my heart but compared to Nottingham...
Nottingham looks like a very beautiful city.
Always wonderful to see a Trader say they watch you, and say how amazing you are and what you do on your channel. Truly inspiring
Having moved to Nottingham some time ago I have noticed a curious phenomenon, there is a small but vocal minority who will take every opportunity to criticise the substantial student population, yet it is precisely the fact that the city has two universities that keeps the culture alive. I speak as someone who moved from the home counties and am constantly shocked by the decline of my hometown in concert with the high average age and the unaffordable property!
What a lovely return exploration, and what a generous and informative guide you had showing you around. Brought back some very happy memories of my Uni days (Trent Polytechnic), can’t believe it was 45 years ago. I was a little Yorkshire punk girl, fronting a Derby band, so we played a few gigs in and around the Nottingham area. My last time in Nottingham was to watch my son’s band headlining Rock City, which was crazy considering I’d also performed there as a student. I very much appreciate you documenting such important social history and heritage. Fantastic work. Well done 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💜
What band were you in, if you don't mind my asking? Might've seen you play live....
I love the love you show my home city of Nottingham... And I love the love they've shown you when you visit. Great video. 👍🏻
Rob did a brilliant job and his knowledge is immense. He is right that Nottingham only includes the inner cities and not the surrounding Boroughs which is part of Greater Nottingham - 2 of the boroughs Gedling and Rushcliffe are some of the best places to live in the UK. Nottingham city centre in the 80s and 90s was thriving and booming. Seeing Broadmarsh and Lister Gate these days really saddened me but still have the Old Market Square, Hockley, Lace Market and Victoria Centre around. The city definitely has a thriving student population as well.
Great video. Ex Nottm lad here. I'm retired and living in Lincs now, left in 1979 to join the UK forces. I still like to go back occasionally. Was gutted when I found that Broad Marsh Centre was all closed down, but still love the Vicky Centre and the Market Square part. I drive to the park and ride, then catch the tram in when I spend the day there, I love to ride those trams and chat to all the local people on them, always find them friendly.
What a great job your guest made of showing the other side of Nottingham, great places and hard working people 👍
Big respect for coming back. So glad you got to see what the city has to offer!
I think you did Job here showing Nottingham. I'm Nottingham born and bred and worked in the City for centre for 20 years, at some of the locations you visited. Nottingham has its issue but these are not unique to the City, it really is a beautiful place, with wonderful people. Thanks to Rob for showing you around!
You're always welcome to come back to Nottingham and thank you for giving our city a fair crack.
Nottingham's famous outlaw truly is the stuff of legend. An international icon of English folklore whose name is known all around the world. A charismatic and defiant defender of the poor, Robin Hood continues to inspire and entertain new generations to this day.
But its not really celebrated properly other than a statue so tourists have nothing to really see
@earlbee3196 he still has family members employed at the local council building - goes by the name of robin bastards!
@@muckle8lol 🙂
@@JoolsUK got it. thanks.
Nottingham Council never did anything to bring Tourists in..(Brian Clough Did !! ). All the Hollywood Films of Robin Hood....and Nothing in Nottingham about him...A Legend as he and Promoted Worldwide....would bring in Millions of much needed cash..
Good thing you whent back! As a Norwegian, I have been to Nottingham and didn't quite agree on the previous episode. Had a great time there, and comming over this summer! See ye all at the Olde Trip!
I hope you have a great time on your next trip to Blighty. As I am sure you realise there is great deal to see and so much history and variety in what is a relatively tiny island that has had a big impact on the world.
@@neilboulton9813 Thanks! I'm over evry year and this time I'll bring the full force with wife and kids.
Very cool that you did a second take on a city.
Well done lad! You've done us proud.
Thank you for coming back, really pleased you got to see a different side to my city & I think Rob was a good guide. Good job guys
Thanks for coming back to set the record straight. I was born in Notts and have had three periods working away but always cams back have no intention of wandering again. Granted due to council incompetence things could be much better in town, but I still think that Notts has kept it's spirit and will rise again!
Lived in Nottingham most of my life. Never knew why Upper Parliament Street and Standard Hill were called that. Educational as well as entertaining.
You absolute legend, that was amazing! When I saw the first Nottingham video I was horrified at what it had become, used to go there all the time but haven't been for years. It's a huge relief to now know that it's still very much alive.❤
Loved watching this and thankful to Rob …for the return invitation …he was a good tour guide with good knowledge of Nottm which has been my home town all my life..almost into my 7th decade and seen a lot of change ..not all for the good …one of my nearest towns outside of Nottm is the birthplace of D.H.Lawrence in Eastwood …used to be a thriving shopping high street …not anymore lots of shops closed !!! The death knell of the high street is certainly being rung out !!!
As an ex-owner of a UK record store back in the 90s - its a tricky biz. For one its a luxury purchase and two, rent/rates were always a major expense.
I had the urge to comment on the original video until I saw the video of you revisiting! Nottingham is a fantastic city, with tonnes of history, independence and a great nightlife - you definitely missed most of the city in your first video. Thank you for revisiting and a massive shoutout to Rob for showing you around! He did a great job. Nottingham is small but mighty and the best thing about it is our people!
Well Done David, and Well Done Rob! This is an exemplary video on several levels; fairness and balance, massive positivity, superb local knowledge, and most importantly avoidance of that Great British obsession:- the Blame Game. Change is to be expected. Don't waste energy on "shoulda, woulda, coulda"; let's adapt, take it in our stride and MOVE ON UP!
Great job mate really enjoyed the video on my proud and glorious city.
Absolute legend he's from Forest Fan TV, he's a legend!!!
Awesome collaboration and revisit to Nottingham…Rob was proper knowledgeable of his City…really come across well….Praise and Props to the Wandering Turnip…
Really great! Rob was a fantastic guide. Loved it!
Brilliant tour and insights, Rob! Great, balanced video! 👍
Respect to you for going back and of course, for the people of Nottingham. I studied there for 3 years and enjoyed the city centre back in 2006-2010.
You know, when I watch your videos I never skip, I just end up watching the whole thing - they are really engaging. I then spend a ton of time pausing and googling various things that have been mentioned in the video
Thanks for revisiting Nottm, I left the Rushcliffe borough to live in rural Cheshire about 15 years ago. My wife and I last revisited Nottingham 2022 post pandemic . One night in the city, the other out past Bingham I remember the late 1980's and 1990's were very good times, lots of party's, listening to grunge type music, chilling out at the Heineken festival. Going to the Rock n Reggae, The Angel, Navigation, Firkin and the Irish club (occasionally), gigs at Rock City and Marcus Garvey.. Meeting friends at the Fellows after work. It seemed a great place to be, back then. I used to go to a variety of record shops, Selecta Disk, Robs and Ned's who seem to suddenly disappear. Shopping in Hockley, getting my second hand clothes, avoiding getting my haircut. It has changed a lot, I can see less people were in the City. The Salutation was busy, but noted the streets seemed lot quieter. Even though we would never live there again, it still has a place in my heart.
Love this! It's always brilliant to see a proper walk through Nottingham, and to even learn a bit more about my home town
I was just about to comment that you’d missed the very centre.. and then saw this new video. Glad you returned to have a fair crack at it. The lions and the square are in the main centre.
Thanks for coming back. I even learnt something about the city which has been home for a long time! Great work.
Rob is amazing could listen to him all day
I live in Nottingham and you have seen more of the city than I have !
The guy that gave you the tour is a brilliant guide....and I've now learnt more about my "adopted" city...Thank you! ♥️
Thanks for that Linda, you're most welcome.
Great to see what positive feedback you’re getting David
Great video and what a lovely guy, it’s great to see people with such passion and knowledge about the history of their area
You’re a great chap David. Thank you for your second visit to Nottingham. Big thanks to Rob aswell for his insight. Nice to see some positives. Not all in life is doom n gloom. I love that so many people are recognising you and what you do. Good luck mate 👍
Well filmed and narrated. As a Notts resident I particularly enjoyed both recent vids on our city, and look forward to browsing through some more content.
That Pitcher and Piano has the only holy spirit i care about :)
Studied in U of N during 2003-2006, watching your video brings back so much memories. Cheers for do this!
As an entertainer i worked in Nottingham (the home of the late great Ray Gosling) many times and enjoyed my visits there. Like so many of the places you visit ~ i performed in and enjoyed ~like yourself , the industrial archeaelogy; canals, buildings, railways and people that i saw & also entertained. Now after 40 years i now live in a warm European country ~ where i moved before Brexit ~ after i realised that i would never be able to afford my own property. I realised too that the entitled Establishment´ (in a ´carefully stage managed democracy´) that have run the UK for generations ~ for their own benefit ~ render the UK population virtually powerless. I also sadly realised that the same population were the ones who bought the hype of the likes of Amazon that resulted in the hollowed out High Streets across the Uk ...many of whom you have visited. Keep up the good work ...whilst you are able & want to . Good wishes old butty!
Well said ..I hate Amazon and it's owner..I don't use Amazon..I prefer Shops .and I buy from shops who Pay Tax here..I also hate what that lot in Westminster have done ..they should be in Jail...not voting for them..
Quality review & you got to see the better parts of Nottingham. He may get banter from the lads on FFTV but Rob from is a very good spokesperson for the city 👏
that was a really excellent episode! Kudos to Rob aka Arctic Fox for reaching out and inviting you down. Nottingham actually looked pretty good to me (compared to your usual content, that is!)
Some history on Guild Hall briefly...
Your guide mentioned the Council House is no longer where the Council are based, they still are, but of course the Council is huge and that building is actually small inside in terms of office space. So only the Coroners, Registrars & Full Council meetings are held there now. The rest of the staff moved into offices behind, in what is called the Exchange Buildings (behind Council House near the shopping arcade) and The Guild Hall. Then the Council purchased Loxley House from Capital One on Station Street and staff moved into there, from Guild Hall, Exchange Buildings and various other much smaller sites. :) Source: I work at NCC
I am mega appreciative that you came back for another visit and accepted Rob's gracious offer to guide you around our City. A lot of people talk down regarding it, but I personally love our City.
Born and raised in Nottingham, but moved 20 years ago to the US. Virgin Megastore was awesome, nice shout out to it.. Never knew why Parliament street or Standard Hill got those names so I learned something new :). I think one of the issues, even with the stores open is that named brands are leaving, and those are the people who can afford the rent on these places. independent business can't afford high rents. and students can't really afford to support them.
Awesome video Mr. Turnip, I think it's so important to document the state of things in the country - if it's negative sometimes, then that's just how it is!
I thought I might have been biased on the last vid with it being my local City, but travelling around the UK as much as I do I'm pretty sure I was fair in saying Nottingham isn't anywhere as bad as some places. Yet, anyway! Thanks for coming back and showing more of it.
I am in Budapest right now and they are rebuilding their amazing old buildings. It can be done!
I've learnt so much about the city I was born in and have lived in all my life (47 years)
Thank you for coming back to my beloved home town. It is in face a busy lively town centre yet still has it's struggles that a lot of people don't notice. It takes a lot to build a lot here and those who have done it struggle hard. Thank you for your support.
Another great video. Thank you turnip 😊
It’s 26 mins long and was posted 2 mins ago🤷🏻♂️
Look I’m taking the compliment either way 😂😂
@@wanderingturnip maybe watched it on x16 speed, it is a great video so far😂
Great video. Thank you for coming back to Nottingham. I haven't seen the footage from your first visit to comment here. Thank you to our local tour guide, Rob who has so much local historical and economic knowledge. It was fantastic to see the Madhouse Nut Centre market stall is still open. I can remember going to this stall when I was a child. I am however upset that familiar stalls with a long trading history in the Victoria Centre Market have been forced to close. In contrast to some of the other videos on your channel I have seen, Nottingham city centre is doing well. Lots of new buildings such as the new incredible library. Although, as Rob pointed out it not good to hear that trade has been affected by the closure of the Broadmarsh centre. I personally don't like walking through that area anymore. Going back to the point about parking charges, as a local business owner and office worker. I don't go into the city very often anymore. The business owners featured in this footage are brilliant representatives of the city. I am very proud of my Nottingham roots. Thank you again for showcasing our amazing city. 💚
The best thing about nottingham is its many charming historic pubs as well as its craft brewing scene.
right, but why are councils like Nottingham on a self destruct course of deprivation, high rents, rates and taxation? Why? Why expect small business to pay sky high rates, rents and other disincentives? surly better to create the conditions for trade rather than make it impossible? It makes no sense. I now believe it is being done by design... How people can sit back and just watch this is beyond my comprehension.. The UK seems to be becoming an administrative district for the world somehow, with the destruction of innovation, small business and trade and communities and reduced to third world status... CRIMINAL!!!
Brilliant! A nostalgic video jorney for me and educational too, well done Robert😃
I did my undergrad at the Uni of Nottingham. Truth be told, at the very start, I didn’t like Nottingham at all. In those three years though, it grew on me considerably. It was especially noticeable towards the end of my time there that it was on the up with lots of new shops opening up around the place. Even some of the local towns around Nottingham such as Beeston have seen quite a bit of investment in recent years with a new cinema opening up there and all sorts of other stuff. Nottingham is truly is a terrific place and I miss it dearly.
Lovely comment 👌
Thank you, Sir and Rob, too for this fascinating video. I don't come from Nottingham (live in Germany, originally from Scotland), but I have been a fan of Forest for more than 45 years.
The last time I was in Nottingham was 1998, so it was great through your vlog to see again how beautiful the city centre is.
Keep up the great work you do ❤!
I was recommended your first trip to Nottm thanks to the UA-cam algorithm, followed it up with the return visit. Rob did my home city proud, instant Subscribe from me 😊
Just wanted to say how happy I am to see the legendary Gary Prail and his great new record/clothes shop FAC1968 featuring in your video on Nottingham. I encourage anyone in Nottingham to check it out as you will get a warm welcome and there's something for everyone in there. It's no understatement to say that Gary has supplied some of the best DJs around with music for decades. His previous amazing shop Funky Monkey was hugely influential on the scene in Nottingham and beyond. I clearly remember him encouraging me to start making records back in 2004, suggesting things to rework and remix when I was just starting out as a producer. He also connected me with distributors when I started pressing up records and let me have the records delivered directly to his shop so they could be collected by the distributor. He used to let me test my fledgling productions on the shop sound system on the CD player - which was often a rite of passage if someone 'big' like Charles Webster walked through the door and they were suddenly listening to your dodgy demo! As someone who's had a 20 year + career making records (some of which did ok) - I honestly credit Gary hugely in helping me get started - without his support and encouragement, I would have found it even more challenging (it's not the easiest thing to do successfully believe it or not). So yeah just wanted to give Gary a huge shout out for being kind and generous - I'm sure I'm not the only one with memories of this. We need more Garys in the world - people who recognise and respect other peoples dreams and want to help them - this is in short supply! Danny Berman (Red Rack'em)
Another great video mate, love it
What a great guide. If only you could find a local like that for everywhere you visit.
Nottingham has seen justice after this video. Concise and comprehensive summary of Nottingham. Well done Rob for making people aware that Nottingham still has a lot going for it.
Having a local raised your content!
Well done Rob! Saw the original and came back here through FFTV! You've done the city proud! Family are from nearby but I've never lived in Nottingham myself (but support forest) and it looks great through your eyes. Would happily live there myself one day!
Rob what a wealth of knowledge.nottingham is great.xxx🐝🐝🐝
Thanks for both videos. They’re a great illustration of the tale of two halves playing out in Nottingham. I live on the outskirts and rarely venture into the city, so I guess I’m a contributing factor in the retail decline we’ve seen there. Bringing life back to such spaces in a way that will last, given how we all work, shop and live these days, is one hell of a conundrum.
Really great episode. So much history and beauty in that town.
Brilliant ! Cities particularly in the North have taken a lot of knocks in recent years ,so anything people like you can do to premote them is great. You got exactly the right man to show you around Nottingham !
Thank you for doing this video with Rob! You Reds 🔴⚪️🌳 ❤️ Love Nottingham ❤
I’m an Environmental Biology student at the University of Nottingham. Accommodation is DEFINITELY the highest costing thing I need to worry about here. Especially if you want Halls, the price has shot up the last couple of years and yeah the fact the city is dependent on us is quite noticeable.
Great job! I love living in Nottingham. Socio-economic issues are ongoing and perhaps unavoidable, but the people power and community spirit make the city special. One quick note on Debenham's, which went into liquidation in 2021. But as a longtime city resident I learned a lot. Thanks Rob for hosting. 😊
I watched this video as I live in the superb of Nottingham and am disabled. I very rarely get into the city centre now as I can't walk far. I loved the way you came over and have subscribed so I can go back and watch your other vlogs.😊 happy to help you towards your future goals ❤
Buying records was a great experience. From going into the little room to listen to an album before buying. And leaving with work of art. Now you get an online app. Just a different era.
because you went back I subbed
I miss home! Been stranded ‘up north’ in Lancashire for the better part of 50 yrs. Apart from going back to uni there and enjoying 5yrs back in the place I was born! Only my Aunt still lives there now!
Marvellous video, David. You are indeed always positive and I am always recommending your channel to all friends and acquaintances. Keep up the good work - you are doing a fantastic job. Thoroughly enjoyed Nottingham.
Loved your vlog touring around Nottingham.Rob was great lots of information really interesting I have learned a lot . You aren’t negative at all.Keep up the good work.
You Have Rob as a tour guide to take you round our City. Robs a Forest Legend.
Cheers Warren!
thanks for doing our great city justice! and kudos to Rob #NFFC
what a class vid 10/10. loved the local tour guide.
I've lived in Nottingham for many years, thanks for coming back ❤️
Very nice to revisit. The gentleman was super informative.
I am liking this new style of format. Keep doing a first look like you do then a tour with a local to see the bits you would miss if you didn't know the area. Keep up your great work.
As a Nottingham resident, I think you did a fair evaluation of this great city. I moved here about 6/7 years ago after living in Brighton for a long time and never looked back. Your passion comes across for the evolution of cities and the new urban decay is unfortunately part of that. Keep it the good work mate!
Lived in Nottingham all my life it’s a beautiful city with very friendly people who are always willing to help you. It shame that the city centre as been ruined by our incompetence city council who only care about their pockets.
Good on you for coming back, great to see some small businesses doing ok as the council don't make it easy for them. Rob seems like a great bloke and very knowledgeable
Keep making the vids :)
I’m so glad you returned 🎉Nottingham really is a decent city, yes there are bordered up places but the history and the people are great. The night life was always fab, there’s great places to eat. I just wish the beautiful old buildings like the old court building wasn’t just left to rot away. The lace market is lovely too. You have my tick of approval 🎉
Viccy Centre (as some if us locals call it) does mean a lot to me, especially the market, as my Gran used to take me there (a VERY long time ago) when I was young and would buy me some comics and sweets from a couple of the stalls that used to be there. Happy times, lovely memories!! Also spent a lot of my time (and money) in Page 45 up until I stopped collecting comics about 5 ish years ago.....
Your hair at the cooling tower bit lol. Glad you got a good tour of Nottingham is not on its death bed only because it's beautiful has history, and loads of students
Hugely entertaining to see you tour my student city. The format for this video is gold. Would love to see you do more videos like this where you get a tour with a local talking about the causes of the abandoned shops and deprivation. It's so inspiring to see the independent businesses you visit thriving so we get the full picture.
Yeah that’s my plan for future episodes 👍
Well...I love the old buildings. Very well kept! Look beautyfull.
Just came across your channel, probably because of the Nottingham area, Showing warts and all you are the High Street Champion. Well Done
