This song is actually a sequel to the song "Hot Rod Race" by Arkie Shibley which would be another great song for them to review. Note the opening line "Have heard the story of the hot rod race where the Ford and Mercury were setting the pace. That story's true I'm here to say 'cause I was driving that Model A".

"Little Nash Rambler" by the Playmates is probably the most humorous of the old car tunes. It progresses from a very slow pace to a very fast one, as a Caddy driver relates his annoyance/frustration at not being able to lose a Nash Rambler that was tailing him while repeatedly honking it's horn. The final line is guaranteed for a an old-fashioned horse 🐎 laugh.

@@orbuckeye896 I saw the Commander several times at the Dillo and quite honestly don't remember if any of them were being recorded. Funny (interesting, not funny) story, though. I moved from Austin to Salt Lake in 1976 (long story which I'd almost prefer to forget). Jim Franklin, the artist that did the cover and MC that introduced them on "Live From Deep In The Heart Of Texas" came to Utah in the late 70s to hang with ZZ Top in Moab, apparently they were building homes into a canyon down there and he and an old friend came and stayed with me for several days in SLC. I lived in a duplex and my neighbors had these two dogs that they kept chained in the backyard. Terrible way to treat a dog and they responded how just about anything would that was chained...they were angry. I warned Jim not to approach them because they were fine when you walked up to them, but would attack when you left. He said he had a "way" with dogs and paid no heed. And sure enough as he got up to leave them, one clamped onto his face and just about wouldn't let go. We had to take him to the emergency room for stitches. Definitely not funny.

Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen were regulars at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin Texas. I highly recommend that you look into the history of this venue. Everyone from Janis Joplin to Charlie Daniels played there. And most all the staff worked for free! Their only compensation was normally whatever Stew was cooking in the kitchen and free beer. There are so many amazing stories that came out of that place. And their list of performers is a veritable who's who of Rock & Roll, Soul, Folk, Country, and Blues.

When this song was written in the 1950's, the Grapevine was a road from Los Angeles North to Bakersfield, over the mountains. The Hwy was 99. It wound through the mountains like a Grapevines at the bottom of the hill. The highway was 3 lanes, a Northbound lane, and a Southbound lane, and a lane in the middle for passing from either direction. It was called the Suicide Lane. That is how the Cadi passed him. Overdrive is another gear usually used on cars in the 1950's. This song was from the 1970's. Like 1972 I believe.

This and "Beep Beep/Little Nash Rambler" were favorite songs of mine as a child of 6 or 7. I bet your girls would love them too.

As much as you like banjo, you will love Dueling Banjos by Roy Clark and Buck Trent.
