Reminds me of years back, 80's & 90's when I used to net shrimp and spots recreationally. It was amazing the amount of bycatch we caught. One has to wonder what our fishery would be like if the inland side of netting would be eliminated. I understand those who for them it's a livelihood but also know the damage a trawl does to our coastal areas. We enjoy the food but complain about the process. Like you said Eric, the rock and the hard place.

I personally think that the way slot reds have rebounded in the sound - it would be one of the top fisheries in the world. It already is as far as mature drum go but I think it would compound and be untouchable in just my lifetime.

Man I had such a good time and I’d totally do it on the side if it was an option around here.

@@ericwilliamsfishing There is a guy that does this out of Mann's Harbor as well. There is a market for it for sure.

hey i was wondering how much you made on your “almost stole my rod” video since it came out i’m thinking about making a fishing channel and trying to get a general idea of how much the rpm is

$15. So I’m about $10 away from breaking even. Lol.

It was a really nice change of pace for sure and also nice to just film and enhoy it rather than focus on three things at once. Haha

A day in the life of a commercial fisherman, hard work, not glamorous , but you’ll always eat good!!!

Cool video. Found it very interesting and a smart idea for watermen to make additional money doing charters. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
It was suprising to see Spanish being brought up in a trawl net like that.
Also, it's hard for me to believe people say it's the recreational fishermen making such a big impact on the flounder population after seeing a video like that.

It was a lot of fun and a very smart idea to make money in what is considered that hardest part of the year. I was surprised too but then again, my buddy nets them in the same sound when they run hard. We caught probably 25 flounder all together with two pulls of the net and 10 crab pots.

Great way to ruin the grassbeds on outerbanks and kill small fish. Wish they would outlaw trawling in inshore waters. Even fish you let go were damaged or eaten by birds.

I understand both perspectives. I don't make my living by it but 1000's of people do on OBX.

@@ericwilliamsfishing i compare commercial fishing to market hunting for ducks which is outlawed for many years. And a net is just like a punt gun. Not sustainable with growing populations so a change is needed same as migratory bird treaty was then. My IT job got outsourced to India so the excuse the commercial guys use that its all theyve ever done is their own problem. I adapted and got into another trade making more money. So can they.

@@ggw7948 thank you for your comment. I agree that nets impact fishing and I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place because I have a bunch of friends that make a living doing it.
