It gave him rules that he had to follow or there were consequences beyond the immediate. He just happened to be around Muslims at the time. If he was around Buddhists, he would have become a Buddhist, same goes for Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, etc. Atheism would have taught him accountability to himself, self reliance, appreciation for the only life we get but didn't have an exposure to it.
