At Harbor Freight, found the "Central Forge 4 in. Scraper/Chopper With Wood Handle" that you are using.
Search of your terms yielded "no results". Hope this comment helps someone. If you ever did a product review of this tool it would be well received. Especially if you showed close up views of the tool and mentioned how it is a MUT (multi-use tool).
Saved money because bark spuds are $70 -80 USD by the time you purchase the tool and handle. Or saved time forging one.
Thank you for posting this video.

thanks for the update - good to know. I used my spud the other day to chip off some bark from a window frame I was making. Still useful.....

Now thats what I wanted to see. I did not know if that was possible on a pine tree. Thank you

Found you on the LHBA forum. I just started a small log cabin project in the woods. I'm peeling pine now. First day I used a draw knife. Back breaking. Yesterday I tried a modified spud kinda like the one your using. Found it works great. But I like how you're stripping one section and peeling of the entire bark. I'll have to try that next time. Thanks for sharing the technique!

I bought several of these spuds from Harbor freight for about $18. It's called a 'MUT' = multi use tool.

My local store has them. I'll pick up a few this weekend. Thanks.

bawhjth, Don't forget about that bark chips, they are the BEST weed control for gardens. They look good and last for years!

It'll take me years to clean up the mess- I have some spots where the chips are 4" deep over a 1600 square foot area. Thanks for the comment!

That’s like peeling a orange made it look easy

well, it is "easy" if you cut them and peel them at the right time of the year. 3 months after this video, I cut 4 more- and it took 3 days to peel each one- it was all I could do to get little chunks the size of biscuits. 85+ logs later, I can't decide what the secret ingredient is- might have something to do with when the sap is flowing (summer- easy to peel), as opposed to when it isn't flowing (winter- hard to peel).

Bark coming off really nicely....how long had it been since your logs were cut?

This particular log had only been on the racks for about a week. The 6 trees I cut in December were very hard to peel, even though I started within a week of felling them. I can only think that it has to do with the sap doesn't flow as well in the winter as it does in summer. The offset is that Skip recommends using winter cut trees due to the increased decay resistance. Bark beetles are a big help in the summer; just try to avoid letting them nest in the logs and getting powder post beetles at the same time. Powder post beetles create tiny pinholes, and can hatch 2 years later. Bark beetles are bigger and plug their nest holes with sawdust, and hatch a few weeks later. The borate mixture from class is the best treatment for these issues.

Ok - thanks. Just curious, generally speaking, where are you building? As I mentioned in a previous comment, I took the LHBA class a couple years ago. If you’re nearby, I would love to see your build in person...I am in Virginia. If you’d rather contact me offline, you can email me at doandbrew@gmail.com. ... by the way, I am Jayhawk Mike on the LHBA forums.

North Alabama. You might check with Ronnie on the forum- he's somewhere near you as well, and has built 50 or so of these. Nice to meet you, anyway, I'm 'mudflap' on the forum. Do you think you'll build with a telehandler or lifting poles?

Thanks for letting me know about Ronnie...I’ll look him up. I figured I’d use a telehandler, but it looks like the lifting logs are working great for you. Look forward to more of your videos and watching your progress!

What time of year was it felled? How long has it been on the ground?

    • @bawhjth
      @bawhjth  3 роки тому

I'm not sure - can't remember - looks like April. It had been on the ground for a week.
