Love "All Shook Down." Possibly my favorite Replacements album. I've been picking up the Replacements reissues lately and reliving my youth. Terrific band.
A lot of great stuff, Brian. I really like All Shook Down. A double live album from War on Drugs for under 25 bucks is a true steal! Of course, I always love hearing about your dad and ABBA.

Also with Richard and Linda Thompson - I have heard raves about this one forever and it somehow escaped my greedy hands and now it's on my radar once again I believe I will get one soon. Thanks for always taking the time to share with all of us.
Hey Rich - Yes, I can hear why you compared the Chameleons to the Cure. I never understood why the Chameleons weren't bigger. Oddly, I just watched the video for Swamp Thing. I had never seen it before. It kind of gives a new meaning to the song.
Nice recent finds! Fun Facts regarding Jesse Winchester, President Carter granted amnesty to those that evaded the draft during his term (1977-1980) in office, thus Winchester was finally able to tour in the US. Also, two members of his band, The Rhythm Aces (McDade and Davis) would go on to form the great band, The Amazing Rhythm Aces!
I've had a similar experience with Goodwill and charity shops. The "The War On Drugs" live set is excellent. There are a couple of ABBA singles that sell for much more than the others, which seems unreasonable. Some great finds, Brian.
Brian, I really dig that Jesse Winchester album, it sounds like it was recorded inside a quaint log cabin, in the middle of a snow storm in the Canadian Rockies. It also sounds like it was recorded in 1870, not 1970. Todd Rundgren was the sound engineer, he also produced songs for The Band. Richard and Linda's '' Shoot Out The Lights'' was recorded during their divorce proceedings in 1981, it's one of my favorite albums of that decade. Linda can't sing anymore, she has some sort of medical disorder. She just released a new album, on which she lets other people sing, hence, the title ''Proxy Music'. The album cover is a sly reworking of the album photo on the debut Roxy Music release.
I have seen that Proxy Music cover, but I didn't realize that Linda can no loner sing. That is sad. I have a copy of Shoot Out the Lights. It is awesome. You description of the Jesse Winchester album is accurate!
Yess Live Drugs!! Under the Pressure is a highlight, as is the extended Eyes to the Wind (big sax solo!) and of course, as a Zevon fan, they bust out accidentally like a martyr!
The second hype sticker is a “replacement” in case the other one falls off. The replacement is one of my favorite U.S. garage bands! J. Winchester is a fantastic writer with a fantastic voice! Great fin, Brian. Great to see JK still going! ✌🏽
“I didn’t know what was going on there. It kind of made me really irritated”…”It’s really kind of frustrating. I really kind of hate it. I guess there’s nothing else to do” 😂 Jesse Winchester is new to me. Sounds like my wheelhouse so will look him up. “You might wonder why I’ve never had it. I can’t explain it”…that’s seriously great news on the reissue of Script Of The Bridge. That’s a screaming deal on that War on Drugs Live album. I will be looking for that one. “I have to replace this inner sleeve, it’s quite awful”….I didn’t know you were a fan of John Cale. “I have the indie color exclusive”…”My dad was a giant fan of ABBA”…excellent video as always Brian. ✌️
Funny, I could have sworn that you had mentioned Jess Winchester before, but I suppose not. I guess I was confusing you with someone else. John Cale is back, and I will have to take up that series again! I have finally shown an ABBA record. I suppose it had to happen eventually. . .
Hi Brian - Not listened to Chameleons for ages, so must give them a spin. I really like that Richard and Linda Thompson album. I believe it was a Sufi community they joined. Cheers Dale
Yes, Sufi it is! Someone else mentioned that, and I just reread what I had read before the video. Apparently, he still considers himself to be muslim. I had no idea 🤔
Hey Brian, if I were to tell the story of my visits in the thrift stores we got over here, I'd make the same observation. I need more Wire records, well I recently got into this ''punk'' band, and even though I wouldn't say that it is my new rabbit hole, I really like what I have been able to explore so far. Never saw that Richard & Linda Thomson record, well I only know about their debut which I do not consider to be an essential one IMHO, but maybe I need to listen it again...Don't say it too loud, though I got Frida's Something's Going On LP in my collection and I find it pretty cool 😆 Thanks for sharing,
FVA - Wire continues to impress me, right up to their most recent releases. I've heard Something's Going On more than a few times, since my dad had a copy. I think it's probably a very good pop record. Phil Collins production I think ... ?
I really need to get some Chameleons records - big hole in my collection- no thrift stores in the U.K. - we have charity shops which are normally full of clothes ❤
Yes, get some Chameleons records! Everyone needs some in their collection 🙂 My hometown had an Opp Shop, which stood for the Opportunity Shop. I never went in because I didn't want anyone to think I didn't have any money. That sounds really strange now, but I was not alone in that thought.
I really like that Replacements album as well even though some core fans thought they were getting "too poppy." I only have it on CD, but it is one I play quite often. I have the same problems with thrift stores as it seems some people are getting the "heads up" when new stock arrives and the good ones are gone before most people see them. The bad part is those people are probably selling them on eBay or similar and aren't real collectors. I do have one War On Drugs album and do quite like it. Nice Richard & Linda Thompson record and Richard Thompson is probably my favorite guitarist. I guess another John Cale video is on the horizon. Cool pickups.
Hi Randy - I continue to enjoy the Replacements, but I am reminded that I have gaps in my collection. I need to fix that! Yes, more Cale in on the horizon. This new record will prompt me to get back to it 🙂
If you want, I know people in TO that can take care of those 2 guys… To be honest not many of these artists I really know but you know what? That’s why we follow each other, to learn and discover… Thanks 🎶✌🏼
Hey Brian. Nice Winchester record. I have have the Bearsville rerelease, which I’ve had since about 1974. Probably his finest. I’m more into the singer songwriter than you are, but his other records are all consistently good and are dirt cheap. The song Black Dog was covered by Babe Ruth on their album First Base and is pretty blistering. Speaking of John Cale, are there new installments coming on his discography? You are a good son for thinking of your dad. Cheers.
Hi Jack - I may keep my eyes open for Jesse Winchester, if the price is right. I am behind in the John Cale series, but more is coming for sure! I just have to do it 🙂
All Shook Down is a good record, but I agree with Paul - it should have been called a Paul Westerberg album. Cool that you have it on vinyl - I think I have all the Replacements albums on cassette. That Jesse Winchester gatefold album shows a real lack of effort on the jacket designer's part. Why make it a gatefold? On the other hand, the War On Drugs album cover is fantastic, as is the Wire cover. It's nice that you got the ABBA records back. I have a couple ABBA 45s - Waterloo and SOS. They are both big-hole records. lol Thanks for showing the records!
Hi randy - I wondered if I had missed the point on the Jesse Winchester album design. I thought, couldn't they have used different photos for the other panels? I agree: the War on Drugs cover is awesome!
Thrift store workers get a lot of cream and there's always lots of vinyl collectors so many so I rarely bother looking at the vinyl. I'm going to check out Swamp Thing as I'm hoping it's going to be swampy and nasty otherwise you'll find me listening to some ABBA 😊
Nice Wire record! I need to get some of their stuff in my collection sometime. What Thrift shops were you at? Nice that you have some ABBA to kick off your 7 inch single collection! ;)
I have a Salvation Army that is reasonably close to me, which is the one I was complaining about. The closest Value Village now individually prices records, which is odd, especially since the prices are always wrong. My 7" collection is growing 🙂
I always assumed that thrift store records usually lack inner sleeves because inner sleeves were not a standard inclusion in the '50s/'60s era that most of those records date from. Is that incorrect?
Hi Brian. I really rate The Replacements' 'All Shook Down'. I was going to say it's more a Paul Westerberg solo record by this point, but then you said that. I've not heard it for a few years, so I hope it isn't blighted by over-clinical 80's production. The whole 'limited edition' thing has become a record label scam. You can guarantee that the label will keep on reissuing 'All Shook Down' as long as there is an audience for it. You quite often get some record collector geek hanging around a thrift store all the time. Just as bad, you often get somebody who helps sort through donations and will either buy up the good stuff before it hits the shelves or put a price sticker on which is higher than you'd even pay in a secondhand record shop. Having said that, the Jesse Winchester album you found is very special! It's interesting that it's produced by Robbie Robertson, as Winchester looks like he should be in The Band; he's got the scruffy beard, gaunt look and thrift store suit. Richard and Linda Thompson became Sufi muslims. Richard Thompson was interviewed about three weeks ago for a BBC Radio 3 programme called 'Private Passions'. He mentioned that he is still a muslim. He was an incredibly engaging and intelligent interviewee, picking some of his favourite records.
I am confident that the Limited Edition statement refers only to the red vinyl version, so subsequent releases could be on endless streams of various colours. Oh well. Sufi! That's it. I had no idea that he is still a muslim. I guess it stuck with him. I might have to look that up to see what his favourite records are. Winchester does look like he should have been in the Band!
@@EmbryonicRobot Something else Richard Thompson mentioned on 'Private Passions' was that his first band whilst still at school included Hugh Cornwall. They remain close, and have talked for years of working together. It's available on BBC Sounds. I'm not sure if you have to be in the UK to listen to it.
That is really interesting; Richard and Hugh i the same band. I can't even imagine what a collaboration between the two would sound like. I'll see if BBC sounds is available 👍
@@EmbryonicRobot Yesterday I was reading an interview Richard Thompson did with The Guardian for his 70th birthday in 2019. The article says that Richard's first band (with Hugh Cornwall) at the age of 14 was called Emil & The Detectives. They were both pupils at William Ellis School near Hampstead Heath.
replacements are a cool band! I have a couple Jesse Winchester albums, didnt know he was a draft dodger, that use to bother me but i really dont care anymore.
A neighbour of mine was a draft dodger along with a former colleague. I got some interesting insights. Interesting times. I may have to seek out some more Jesse 🙂
Hi Brian, as already written I see the Thompsons got into islamic Sufi-ism some might actually consider it a cult. I caught Chameleons live about five years ago here before their revival of playing bigger venues gathered momentum which was cheaper and intimate gig. Because the church are probably my favourite band chameleons sound to my ears similar and certainly the introspective lyrics hit the same thoughts in my head at least. Shame neither band got bigger what they deserved.
Hi Martin - I did read a bit about Sufism, but I got bored and stopped. It is surprising that certain awesome bands never got the attention that they deserve. The Church and The Chameleons had everything going for them, it seemed to me, but only got moderate success. It's confounding. I have never seen the Chameleons. It would have been great to see them!
HP strong start with the Replacements, but I don't have that one. I have all of their records up until Pleased To Meet Me. Everybody knows that inner sleeves just slow down the process of getting that record on the table. All you need is a cover man. I don't get people who don't use download cards. You gotta have some music for when you're on the go too. Lost In The Dream was the last WOD record I got. There's a few bands from that period like the National & Spoon who all had a hot streak & then I just lost interest in them. I love Wire & all things punk as you know, but I'm always reluctant to buy live stuff because usually the punk live records of those times sound like absolute shit. Believe it or not I have that Richard & Linda Thompson record. Mainly because I'm deeply spiritual. The Cale...still being wonderfully weird into his old age. First impressions? I could never be as good a son as you are HP. I dreamed of setting all of my dad's Billy Joel records on fire many times. Maybe you can sell the promo for 2 cents. Cheers...Ben
Mike Carlson never uses d/l codes. WTF, I say! They are useful in the car on long trips. I think Spoon are still going strong and have not missed a beat. I see what you mean about The National. You are deeply spiritual? Maybe about music 🙂 Cale still has it, if you ask me. I really like his new one, but I have only hear it two to three times. I am sure you could buy some used Joel record and light them on fire just to satisfy that urge!
Collector edition, or special edition have become kind of a joke to me. To your point if they don’t even put a number on them how many are there? It’s insane. Brian, kink of sad you are so stingy with your download cards, taking them all for yourself. Share the music and love lol. I never use them, on my phone it is more of a greatest hits that I play. It’s all the stuff I really love. You found a lot of recent things
I agree with your comments about special editions: they are now meaningless. All they have to do is change the colour of the vinyl or add a track and it is different from the special or limited edition. Crazy. I am very selfish with my d/l codes!
Many thanks ✌️
Thanks for watching!
Awesome picj ups bro

@@EmbryonicRobot Sooo spiritual 😂
