  • Spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 of Stranger Things.
After Stranger Things made a surprise splash in 2016, expectations for season 2 of Netflix's ode to 80's cinema were high. Does the sequel live up to expectations?
In this video I review Stranger Things 2, going over what it does right and what it does wrong, while also drawing some parallels to the many similarities it has to James Cameron's 1986 classic Aliens.

Loved your review. Agree with everything you said. I could not agree more that the episode where Eleven hangs out with the punks and grows her powers was a massive blow to the excellent pacing that season 2 had going for it. That episode should have been edited down and added into several of the middle/end season episodes instead of being a stand alone.

Hey Brandon, now that season 3 has come and gone, I was interested to know what you thought about it? I'm assuming you're probably too busy right now to give it's own video like with 2 here, but I'd be fine with just a brief little rundown. 😀

Second season was entertaining and I binge-watched it. But it is still kind of pointless because it presented nothing really new.

Agree with everything said. I also think season 2 was not as good in subverting tropes like the first season with characters such as Billy and Kali that have really simplistic and thin characterizations and motivations.

The key problem with James Cameron's Aliens was the obvious one: it made the so-called xenomorph creature analogous to an ant or bee colony, stripping away the mystery of the creature and ultimately trivializing it, turning it into little more than a "bug" than can be easily disposed of with firearms. The first film was entitled Alien for a very good reason, after all. I'm glad that the Duffer Brothers wisely decided to refrain from exploring the upside down world any further in this season, allowing this world and its inhabitants to retain their ambiguity and power.
