  • Well-managed transactions are the heartbeat of YNAB. If transactions don't seem to import into your budget quickly enough, but you also don't trust yourself to enter transactions on your own, no fear! Take advantage of the best features of both by utilizing direct import while entering your own transactions.
    Note: Direct Import is currently available within the United States and parts of Canada. We are working toward expanding coverage throughout the world, and can't wait until everyone can utilize direct import!

      Manually entering my expenses and tracking my spending budget has revolutionized my life! I was proud of the bad of chips I bought yesterday. Budgets are a magical thing

    I manually enter out and about purchases and have recurring scheduled entries for my autopay. I keep track of the arrival days of the month for autopay items and schedule them for the first day in that range. I use direct import, but mostly for catching things like unexpected deposits and for any items I totally forget to put in. I reconcile my YNAB accounts against the bank periodically. I love YNAB: It totally changed our world!!

      Sounds like you've got a SYSTEM. Love it!! Thanks for sharing, Drew! I also get anxious if I don't reconcile every few days. Keeps the budget clean and assures me all the dollars I've budgeted with are for sure mine!

      You Need A Budget (YNAB) I do the same thing! I enter most new transactions, then let the sync catch what I missed... sometimes I’m too busy though and rely on the sync to “bring ‘em in”! I also use the recurring entries...but sometimes amounts change, the auto payment date shifts a little or I miss some. And I also reconcile every day or every few days now because I heard Jesse mention that on a podcast. That is so much better than waiting a month (or so! Yikes!) like I was doing before. So much easier to catch the ones that are missed, plus you can actually count on the balance being correct. (I like when the balance feature was added). I just stopped entering every single checking account transaction in my checkbook last week! I was using it to “reconcile” with ynab...but just realized that is so much extra work! You just have to reconcile often.
      Love your videos Hannah! And I have ALWAYS loved analogies!

    You can also set up fixed expenses on the same date to repeat monthly. This was a game changer for me. I don’t have to worry about entering my cable bill, car insurance, Netflix subscription, etc.

    I would add one game-changing tip...set up text alerts to your phone - anytime you spend >$1 on your credit or debit card (if you use these to earn points like I do!), you get a text alert! Then, you can make sure you've entered these transactions into your budget - it works GREAT!! When direct-import happens, they are always matched & you get that satisfying "match" icon! LOVE IT! Thank you Hannah, always, for your great videos.

    I’m in my 4th month of using YNAB. For me, manual entry is what I use for this reason: accountability. Entering each transaction is an answer to the question “where did my money go” and the more aware I am of the answer, the better I am getting at reducing impulse splurges. I expect I’ll move to the hybrid at some point though.

      Wow Joy, you nailed it on the head. I feel the same way. Entering yourself brings that awareness of how much we are TRULY spending. Whenever I rely on direct import I always end up going massively over budget.

    Direct import is not available for my country so the manual import is the way to go. By entering manual transaction I get to have a better grip on my spending ... Knowing that I will have to enter the transaction manually somewhat slows my spending.

      Carlos, that's the spirit! I definitely wish I had a reason that pushed me to enter myself before I finally decided to make the switch from direct import years into using YNAB. Entering yourself is definitely the highest-clarity, highest-awareness way to go! Definitely makes it harder to dish out mindless cash.

    I use unlinked accounts and manual transactions, which has been awesome for awareness and having the budget stay accurate, but I do use recurring transactions for any bills that come out monthly. Love this option because it does two things: turns the category orange until I’ve funded the upcoming transaction, and on the date the amount is leaving my account it pops up in my budget for me to approve the transaction and remind me it’s happening. I don’t have enter the house payment manually each month, but my accounts don’t have to be linked either.

    To expand on Brian's suggestion. I also use scheduled transactions for all automatic transactions (utilities, mortgage, subscriptions, etc). Another bonus to this technique - when you view that category in your budget the amount of any upcoming transactions is listed and shows you what scheduled transactions will pull from this category before the end of the month.

    I don't link my bank accounts. I like to manually enter all except the re-occurring transactions, which I set to repeat. Every few days I download the ofx file from the bank and import it, just to be certain nothing was missed and to reconcile my accounts. It takes all of five to ten minutes. Thanks for the walkthroughs Hannah; They're super useful.

    We don’t have direct import in Australia so I use a combination of scheduled transactions for fixed expenses and manual entry for daily stuff. I’m dreadful at entering the daily transactions at the point of purchase, but Carlos (in this thread) talks about triggering text messages for card swipes and then scrolling the text messages at the end of the day - I think that’s a great idea and is something I’m going to try

    #4 Scheduled transactions. I set all those "just happen" transactions as scheduled transactions to enter a day before they automatically hit my bank. This way, if there's ever a scheduled transaction entry and a downloaded entry that don't match, it's obvious to me because there's "two" transactions and that alerts me to A) figure out why they were different - did something change; and B) make sure my budget gets updated (which of course, if it's over YNAB will tell me, but not if it's under).

    I use the third method. Though I usually don't add the transaction until I get home and I'm on my computer, as I prefer the web site over the mobile app. I do sometimes use the app still though to record a random one.
    But my bank shows transactions as cleared immediately, so I don't need to wait a few days for it to show. But it does take a few days to transfer into ynab, so I still add it manually so I'm up to date on my budget. I even mark the items as cleared, even if they're "pending", since my bank shows them and takes the money as spent to it makes sense.
    I will say I love the cleared function on ynab though for checks. I wrote a $295 check for my dogs vet visit cause my roommate actually brought him in for me (since I was at work) and checks work best for that situation imo. The check hasn't cleared, but I still have it in ynab as uncleared and so I still know how much I ACTUALLY have to spend, instead of what my account THINKS I can spend lol.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  4 роки тому +1

      Katey, brilliant!! We sound really similar. I also prefer the site over the app; I like the space and breathability a computer offers versus a phone. And yes, lately I've been clearing transactions once they hit my bank! They I can reconcile earlier so I don't have to wait on those transactions to roll in. When DI imports the transactions after I've already reconciled, it'll still link with the reconciled transactions and my budget stays 100% accurate 👌🏼

    Method #3 since direct import started with YNAB!! Kept the receipts until I manually entered them at the end of the day. Now that YNAB is on your phone, I manually enter EVERY transaction for the day and feel REAL GOOD when that reconcile comes through in sync. Amazon is the only bane of this method.

    IFTT reads card/bank push notification on phone an write to a google sheet. in google sheet I have a regular expression that extracts the value and write text in 1 coll and value in another.
    zapier read google sheet for new lines, and with ynab integration get the new line and post to my ynab.
    so, I swap the card, and receive the notification from my bank, and it´s entered in ynab at same time.

    Don't know where to put this question. This is related to purchases via credit card (big purchases that will be broken down to several months).
    I know you can put a recurring entry and set it to monthly. However, the date you purchase the item will vary from the date of the monthly installment. So how do you go about entering the said transactions?
    Scenario:
    Here's what we have in our country. You can purchase a phone for (~$800) and take advantage of their "Buy Now Pay Later" promotion. You'll be charge installment for 12 months. AND 1st charge will happen 1/2 month(s) after your purchase month.

    One of my struggles is when I order a bunch of stuff on Amazon with split categories. I can take the transaction total and budget it YNAB, but a few days later when direct import happens, I end up with 2-3 Amazon transactions because Amazon separated my packages into different invoices and now I have to figure out how to redivide my original YNAB transaction into the separate Amazon invoices. I've started just relying on direct import to catch the broken up invoices and then I go back to Amazon and reconcile each one. I don't know an easier way to work with this in YNAB.

    • @uptbug
      @uptbug 4 роки тому

      You can match transactions. I do it all the time with my electric bill. Everyone month I have a scheduled transaction for it ($100). It is my best guess at the maximum of what my bill will be. Then when I do an import the actual electric bill transaction comes through (let's say for $86) I select both with the check box, go to the menu, and choose "match." YNAB automatically chooses the actual amount ($86) when merging (matching) the two.
      I like to have the scheduled transaction because it makes auto bugeting easier. Also, after the real bill comes in and I match it to the scheduled transaction I get to move any extra ($14) to a different category and my electric bill category is a nice happy green even after moving the excess.

    I swear I didn't hear the word cash in the entire video. Don't you use cash anymore in the USA? Lucky you, that's the hardest account to keep up with; I have to make "adjustments" every 2 or 3 months on that one. And also we don't have direct import in Mexico so, bank accounts aren't easy either. Still I've been using ynab for 7+ years and has helped me a lot with my finances. It's like I use ynab in hard mode, yours is beginer mode. Maybe I should be making the videos huh? XD

      Lol! I don't think most people intentionally want hard mode, but it sounds like you probably could do the videos. Running a cash account is tough! I rarely use cash anymore because it's so easy to track everything else in YNAB.

      Felipe, you're not wrong! 😂 I'm not much of a cash user; more and more these days, cash is becoming harder to use/less available as a way to pay for products or services. When I do run into an inflow of cash, I usually leave it outside of the budget and use it for one specific thing (like buying car fuel, then reallocate my budgeted "car fuel" money somewhere else in the budget) or just count it as bonus fun money or as extra on-hand "miscellaneous" money. And hey, if you made a YNAB video, I'd be your first view! 😁

    So if I manual enter and then want to pay my credit card balance in full won’t I be “overpaying” the balance since many transactions may still be pending for them?

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  3 роки тому

      Hi Cressa! Technically, yes. When I pay my credit card, I usually put my account "in the negative" for a day because I'm overpaying my current balance. I believe most credit card companies will let you overpay, so long as you don't exceed your current + pending transaction total.
      If you'd prefer not to overpay, you can always edit your payment amount to match your current balance when you make a payment. You'll still have money set aside for those pending transactions in your Credit Card Payment category.
      Hope that helps! 🙂

    Help! I'm so overwhelmed with YNAB, but I want to love it and make it work for me. I have bi-weekly payments that I want to budget for but I can only figure out how to do a weekly recurring and that bugs me because it won't reconcile that way with direct import.

      there’s a repeat option for every other week that sounds like it’s what you’re looking for… unless you mean two times per week? if it’s two times per week, i think that just setting up two separate transactions, and making each repeat weekly would definitely be a good option.
      also i’ve found that the support team is really responsive on email and in the chat function on the app and they’d definitely be able to answer questions like this, definitely recommend using that feature :) good luck!

    • @YNABofficial

      Hi Melissa! When you get a paycheck, you can add a new transaction, categorize it to "Ready to Assign", and enter it as an inflow. That will add the money to your account and cause those dollars to show up in your Ready to Assign.
      Hope that helps! 🙂

    How does it handle cost of dining out if tip transaction doesn’t clear at same time as meal charge. ?

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Brian! It all depends on how the restaurant/business itself works. I used to go to a coffee shop every week that would register the tip as a separate transaction, so when I went there I'd have to enter my coffee purchase as a transaction and add the tip as another transaction. When they imported into my budget, I just approved the linked transactions and moved on!
      At most places, though, the transaction will pend at the bank for the purchase price, but when it clears the bank it will clear for the purchase price+tip in one transaction. In this case, I always manually enter one transaction at the time of purchase that includes the tip, and by the time it imports into my budget later, they link up seamlessly and I'm on my merry way!

      Diane! I'm sorry you're feeling a bit overwhelmed!! A few thoughts that came to mind when I read your comment:
      1. The more often we check in with our budget, the less we have to deal with at once. I usually take a peek at my budget everyday just to make sure things are categorized, categorized correctly, and that I didn't miss anything during the day. It's a little easier if you tie your daily check-in to an already existing habit-while you're brushing your teeth, waiting for the coffee to brew, waiting on the dog to find that perfect spot for their morning 💩 (mine always takes at least three minutes to find THE spot). This helps ease the overwhelming pouring in of transactions if you're only checking in every few weeks or so.
      2. Credit cards and loan payments often actually have two transactions associated with them-in inflow of money to the credit card or loan you're paying off, and an outflow of money from whatever account you're paying it from. For instance, if I'm paying off a $500 credit card bill, I do this with the money from my checking account, which means there should be two transactions happening here:
      1. I'll create (or import) a $500 *inflow* transaction into my credit card account, because I'm satisfying the negative $500 balance by bringing it back up to $0 with a $500 payment.
      2. I'll create (or import) a $500 *outflow* transaction from my checking account, because I spent $500 from my checking account to pay the $500 credit card bill.
      I hope this makes sense! If you're still having troubles or think something might be off, definitely write in to our customer support team!! They'll dive deep and help you figure out what's going on!!

    Hi, Hannah. Categorizing transactions is the hardest part of YNAB for me. When I try to categorize an inflow/payment, my linked credit card account does not show up on the list. What am I doing wrong?

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  Рік тому

      Hmmm... not sure I fully understand the situation, but I'll try my best based on what I think you're asking!
      When adding a transaction, we want to select the account the transaction was made through. So, if you buy lunch out with a friend using your credit card, start a new transaction, select "Account" and select your credit card, then finish entering all the other details (payee, category, memo, etc) and save! This will record the purchase as a credit card purchase to your credit card account.
      When categorizing transactions, we want to categorize it to the *spending category* it should come out of, no matter what account or payment method we're using. For example, if you go to lunch with a friend and pay with your *debit* card, you'll select your checking account for the account type and categorize the purchase to your "Dining Out" category (since you were dining out). And if you go to lunch with a friend and pay with your *credit* card, you'll select your credit card for the account type and, just like with the debit card, you'll still select "Dining Out" as the category, because regardless of which account or payment method you used, that's where the spending is occurring.
      If you have your credit card linked as a "Credit Card" account in YNAB, anytime you DO use your credit card for spending, make sure to select it as the "Account" when entering a transaction. What this does is take the money you spent at lunch with a friend OUT of your "Dining Out" and move it into your "Credit Card Payment" category so that you're ready and able to pay off your credit card in full when the due date comes around.
      If this process *isn't* happening for you when you categorize credit card purchases, it may mean you have accidentally been using a "Checking" account type for your credit card instead of the "Credit Card" account type. One way to check this is to see if you have a "Credit Card Payments" category at the top of your budget with your credit card account listed as a category within it. If you don't, then that may mean you originally set up your credit card account as some other account type, such as checking or savings, and need to switch it to be a credit card account.
      Let me know if this helped answer your question or sort things out at all! If not, I'd say to go ahead and write into our customer support team because they can give you more detailed help with your budget and figure out what may be going on here!

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  Рік тому +2

      YAAAY!! I'm so glad it was helpful!! 😅 Yes, when you add a credit card as a "credit card" account type, it was automatically make a "Credit Card Payment" category at the top of your budget that you *can't* delete unless you were to remove your credit card account entirely. Whenever you record spending on the credit card, it'll move the money from whatever spending category you select and drop it into your credit card payment category so you're ready to pay it in full when the bill arrives. It's SO handy and I've started using my credit card EXCLUSIVELY, and then using all my rewards points to buy new clothes that I didn't want to use my "Fun Money" category for 😂
      Sounds like we found the root of the problem! Hope this switch goes well, but if you run into any issues or need any further help, always feel free to reach out to our customer support team! They can walk you through step by step!!

      Alfred, I feel ya! It took me a long time to build the habit of entering transactions right away. Like, a LONG time. Years. What finally helped me was anytime I made a purchase with a physical receipt, I would wrap the receipt around my phone or tuck it in the phone case once they cashier handed it to me so I would remember to enter it once I got back to the car. Eventually I was doing that enough that it helped with remembering to enter online purchases. I also compared my budget with my bank account every few days as I was building the habit to see what I missed! Now I'm a lot better, but still not perfect. Heidi, your words were so encouraging!! CONGRATS on the savings!! That's incredible! Best of luck to you both!!

      I know what you mean Alfred, but you could just let the sync take care if importing your transactions..although yes it does take a day or so. I try to enter if I think about it...so I know my true balances..also sometimes the import will put in the wrong vendor so if I do it then it will link with correct info. Plus Amazon..I buy so buy so much and they are different categories so it makes it easier for me if I enter those “on the fly”. Problem is when Amazon split the shipment and charges partial amounts!
