      People hated this movie because it wasn't what they expected. People of a certain demographic heard Johnny Cash in the trailer and saw that it was a mob movie set in New Orleans and thought it would be right up their alley. Then they realize at the end that the gratuitous violence wasn't in the movie for the sake of violence but as a tool to critique the United States and capitalism. They felt duped that their own interests were used to make them confront the harsh reality they've continually refused to confront.

      Kobe blew a 3-1 lead. Collectively, we aren't genetically dumber. But there are a lot of people who are starting to believe that it is okay to accept simple answers and never strive for the truth because it "takes too much effort" This way of thinking is especially facilitated by social media and careless "meme" sharing without ever checking facts. It is a multitude of things really. We aren't the dumbest generation, but things can get dangerous if we don't fix the current habits in our culture.

    Great moment and scene, but I think people are forgetting the best part of it. It's not just the ending but where you hear the Line "this business is a business of relationships" & Pitt responds, "Yeah and everyone loved Markee." That shit right there tells you the entire movie. Everyone will SAY shit like "community" or "relationships" or love, but all that goes out the window when it comes to money. God bless the USA, right?

      I think people expected Scorsese, and maybe more glam, and that wasn’t 70’s Boston at all. I know the film wasn’t set in the rough and tumble seventies, but it’s source material was, and the story reflects that.
      I didn’t love it at first, but it has grown on me. One thing I thought was out of place was the slow motion killings, it didn’t jive with the gritty realism of the rest of the film, for me at least.
      McNairy and Mendelsohn killed it, both are real talents. Gandolfini was simultaneously terrifying and vulnerable and played it perfectly. And Sam Shepard, all he really needs to do is show up. Anyway as time goes on I think more people will come around to it.

      I managed a movie theater when this came out and I can attest to what you're saying. We had several people walk out in fits of rage because they didn't realize this movie, with it's mob characters and Johnny Cash song, was going to be a critique of America and capitalism. The only other movie that may have had more angry people leave while I worked there was The Wolf of Wallstreet.

      Maybe it's better seeing it twice. Before this scene, for me it just looked like an entertaining and thoroughly thought gangster film in the context of the 2008 financial crisis, with some interesting concepts like the "sensitive" hitman who can't kill people when they show their feelings right before death and beg for their lives, or the intelligent cinematography and shots that give the movie a special feel and makes the viewer feel inside the movie, but nothing more than that. But the last scene changes everything.

Explains why the neighbors and coworkers really don't care if each others are dead. Some people have a different perspective and that's because they welcome the person into a bedroom or have some benefits, that's all. It is where CEO and CTO make full use of a person and after that the person may as well be dead. This place is not about human. It is about benefits. Gratification, profits, money.

    ..Pitt didn't receive an Oscar, and the movie had low "ratings", for the same reason that this quote is the most powerful and truthful quote of the film. If you had a quarter to play an arcade game that you KNEW was fixed AGAINST the player.. you'd be an idiot to play; no matter how heroic or lucky you thought you'd be. Its the same game we play everyday people lol #America,theonlybusinesswith100%margin

      The movie had low ratings because the movie is not mainstream. It's not for the majority of the people. It is an american actor who rose up the letter of entertainment business (american 'invention'), is powerful and rich. He is mocking the american dream, the statues quo of the USA, society, economy,...

    I admire a writer named Christopher Hitchens. He was a smart guy who I agree with most of the time. He wrote a book about Thomas Jefferson. I find this scene to be a more honest assessment of Jefferson than anything in that book. What a great film- I must have watched at least five times on Netflix.

    "Now fuckin' pay me." His last statement about the U.S. makes sense to me.
    England, Italy, Iran, Ethiopia, etc. have cultures. The U.S. culture has always been making a living with very little government intervention. It's never been about preserving a certain language, customs etc. It's youth oriented and driven to go forward and not look at the past.

    • @hikingbird42
      @hikingbird42 9 років тому +6

      I feel the exact same way, I live in Canada and they want us to believe we have a culture yet all I see is our customs disappearing. Less family values and more about how our life our existence in this world is to work. I come from an italian background and i went to an italian school in an italian sector. I recently went to college and I'm astonished how the students have no moral/cultural background they forget who they are and change who they are constantly with a new trend, America is truly a sad place to live in, no community just selfsh intentions

    So true. Alexis De Tocqueville agreed and wrote that American Democracy and Capitalism both thrive from individualism. The idea that anyone can make it if they work hard and try their best (the Horatio Alger Myth) is what pushes people to create things like the telephone and the automobile and people are driven to vote due to the desire to secure their own interests. If you think you're getting any help, and you're not disabled or with children, think again. You're on your fucking own!
