I'm sure I've commented before about how amazing she was live 20 years ago(soul changing and mesmerising) but in just over a month I'm seeing them live again. I haven't left my house except for work in years. I saw they were coming to Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 and I was straight out of my comfort zone buying tickets to see them!

Suzy(sp?) I dig that you love Amy Lee. The biggest compliment I can give her is that she is the closest thing I have ever seen to Pat Benatar in her prime. It took a little more than 20 years, but Amy finally arrived as a worthy torchbearer to Pat’s crown of best frontwoman ever. It is really interesting to compare them. Both are small with dark hair (Neither is over 5’2”) and front entirely male bands (All male with the exception of themselves). Now Pat has the ridiculous high range, while Amy has that strong alto voice and also has the piano/keyboard ability. But the bottom line is, Pat will always be the Queen of rock, but, Amy is a more than worthy successor to that title. I’m glad they were separated by enough time that Amy gets her due.
This song, of course, was the first shot in a back and forth between Amy and Seether lead vocalist and guitarist Shaun Morgan. For a time, Amy and Shaun were together and this song was her response to their breakup. Amy was honest about that from the beginning. It took a few years, but Shaun finally admitted that Seether’s song Breakdown was his response to this song. Who won the battle? Who cares. They’re both killer songs.

I understand Amy is a classically trained pianist. As well as being completely gorgeous, and the worlds greatest female singer/songwriter/performer with the voice of an angel, there's nothing about her or her music left to adore. I'm completely hooked.

I just realized why that second verse has always sounded so bad-ass to me. It's because they connect the two little guitar parts from the first verse with another little stutter riff, so it sounds super freaking heavy when they come back to it after the little piano part.

What I didn’t say earlier is this relationship played out in a very public way. Amy did this song about her take on her relationship with Shaun Morgan (Lead vocalist/lead guitarist from Seether). It came out in 2006. Breakdown, by Seether from 2007 is Shaun Morgan’s take on the same relationship. I don’t know who to believe, but in relationships, rarely is it all one sides fault. That being said, I tend to side with Amy, but it t seems things worked out OK for both of them.

So it appears you don’t know the story behind this song. Amy wrote it about Shawn Morgan, lead singer and lead guitarist from Seether. Both Evanescence and Seether broke big about the same time (2001). Consequently, they did a lot of touring together back then. This led to a collaboration between Seether and Amy Lee on a remake of their song Broken, for The Punisher soundtrack. The song they did was Broken and it was huge. Anyway since Amy and Shawn began spending more time together, because of that song, they began seeing each other, but there ended up being problems. When they broke up they wrote songs which ripped on each other. Shawn wrote the Seether song Breakdown, which pictured Amy as a shallow self-centered person who tried to control their relationship and then berated him when problems arose. Amy’s song about Shawn was this one and I think it is pretty obvious that Amy inferred that Shawns sobriety issues caused their problems and their break up. I don’t know if there is a right or wrong side to do his story, but it is interesting that they chose to air their dirty laundry through their music. Now Shawn wouldn’t admit for awhile that his song was about Amy, but I think Amy explained Call Me When You’re Sober, when it first came out. All in all it is a very interesting story.

I actually think her original guitarist (On the cd Fallen) is better than Terry Balsamo (Who played for her on this cd (The Open Door). Actually, the previous guitarist, Ben Moody, left for a gig that was just as high profile. I was never a fan of Kelly Clarkson, but then I heard Behind These Hazel Eyes. I loved it. It combined Kelly’s voice with heavier music that was more guitar based. Then I checked out her first cd while wondering why that song was so much harder than Kelly’s other stuff. I found out that Ben Moody the guitarist who had just left Evanescence, wrote most of the music on that cd. Then it all made sense.
