    They did have a scheduled unveiling of a mural honoring Willie Mays which happened yesterday as well. I used to write for The Birmingham Times, the black newspaper rooted in that area, and it’s been great to see it look alive. I’ve taken my kids to tour The Negro League exhibits and to a couple of college “classic” type games over there and I don’t think they’ve EVER seen that type of crowd. I do want to get back over to see the renovations and, although I’d love to hear the medley Jon Batiste prepared to perform tonight, not sure I’ll make it. Hopefully it’ll be aired or streamed since it is a game 😊 (TMI 😅)

    Actually I don’t think Juneteenth should be a national holiday
    The ratification of the 14th amendment should be a holiday
    And July should be the month of remembrance for The African Diaspora, not February

    I wouldn't say reading was your guilty pleasure but a pleasant pleasure. ( Just sayin). Personally, l like what Dr Carr stated, it's what we do with it that should be of concern. it's should be a day of reflection of our past and the struggles. Although, make no mistake, we are still not free. Which means, until we have that freedom to follow our own passions, desires, and destiny. There will need some sort of restoration,(whatever that may be), to bring us back align with what and who we really are. Until then we will never be truly free.

    😢Seems like only the descendants of emancipated Texans give Juneteenth its proper honor. Sadly, the ‘national holiday’ is the butt of horrible ridicule by YT nationalists and Black MAGA. Also folks trying to make it summer Kwanzaa. 😢

      Let them ridicule what they want. What and how we decide to observe and commemorate is up to us and should be independent. Why do even we care wth they think?

      It is important for us to have a conversation about how we should celebrate. As I was telling someone, we were celebrating this day before it was "official"

      In my view, it's difficult to give Juneteenth the proper honor when so many of our young don't know much about it and truly don't know much of anything about their history in general and some don't want to know. Some of have a distorted view of time and believe we have had what "freedoms" we do for much longer than we have and that they are guaranteed to them without struggle or attention.

    Good show. It was so ironic yesterday, while I was listening to my favorite sports radio show. The white radio personalities were off, and the black ones worked. They dedicated the show to Willie Mays.

    Control of our own bodies, land, government and resources and the ability to defend them. More just form of government and laws. Laws that protect the environment because we go as the environment goes. Basic living wage and a maximum wage. No one person does a billion dollars worth of work. Land and resources belong to the people not four or five billionaires. Redistribution of the wealth that’s concentrated amongst a few people. Let me think on it some more…

    Grew up, currently live in TX and my opinion is certainly unpopular here, with all due respect to those who've kept the memory of Juneteenth alive, I've always felt that it is 1) a TX day, and 2) for commemoration, not celebration. There is something that doesn't settle well with me about celebrating late, state-sanctioned, faux liberation from the same government that made enslavement possible, and continues to make it possible under the Constitution. I also can't stomach the hypocrisy exhibited by putting a marker in the sand that this was finally the end of slavery and therefore should be nationalized, when we KNOW there were (and are) still legally enslaved black people in several states.

    • @karenl7786
      @karenl7786 3 місяці тому

      You certainly have excellent points. Brothers and sisters outside of Texas should commemorate in solidarity, in order to keep the true spirit. And the "national holiday" is bunk.

    The sadness is that in 2024 Galveston and most of Texas still needs a Juneteenth Awareness and Awakening! With Texas now having Voting Rights, why aren’t they utilizing it? You have the RIGHT To VOTE Now!🙄 If Colin Allred doesn’t overwhelmingly defeat the wimpy MAGA suck up Ted Cruz in November, it says a lot about the State’s citizens and how WS Fear is still a sickening political operative!😔

    Why couldn't it have been a federal holiday just for black americans? We always have to share ours. I dont like my bigoted nonblack coworkers getting the day off too. Part of true freedom to me means having things just for US without having to share it with them or being told it's racist or divisive.

  • @Yollie1978
    @Yollie1978 3 місяці тому

    Yes a time to rebuild and reflect. Unfortunately I do no agree, I believe this should be a national holiday, everyone does not have access to you all nor have the knowledge or education, or like Dr Carr referred to the elders to teach and learn from. This is a time to teach the truth about our history, if this was not a holiday folks who don't know the truth history would not have the opportunity to learn. I was at a very, very large Juneteenth celebration in my city and most of the young people didn't know why they were celebrating nor did they know the true history we were able give out information that included book marks with the truth, plus a lot of more information about black history for free. Although may not be popular this are opportunities to teach the truth while fellowshiping together. And if nothing non melanated get to be reminded of these misgivings yet another time if they learn nothing they will be reminded on Juneteenth of their wrongdoings to us.
