Sunflowers are beast, so they do pretty good again the weeds. We used them to start conditioning the new ground we opened up, and would use them as a cover crop to start fighting weeds on new area. We were starting as seedlings for 2 weeks, but I want to do more direct seeding this year. 6 inch spacing

Love love love growing and selling the doubles! My customers lover them too. Investing in a seeder this year, because last year I had them planted at different depths which caused different bloom times. Also... it was a pain planting 200 sunflowers by hand. 😅

That sucks that you are fighting with squirrels about them. We only have birds get into them after they are finished, and sometimes mice go for the seeds as seedlings
Serina if you enjoy the green sunburst when it blooms for it's "architecture"- you would really enjoy the HULK Aster. It's probably one of my favourite "ugly" flowers, it adds such a nice filler touch to a bouquet! I'm going to check out Sunflower Selection- it's great that they deliver to Canada. I'm a home grower and I agree about the Starburst Greenburst! I've been growing them a few years and kind of just happened into them. Thanks for the info here. I'm going to try the ProCut White Lite too and I'll think about succession growing for the ProCuts. I think I still have some Gold Lite from last year but had no idea what I was doing in terms of timing. Thanks!
I bought some dwarf sunflowers from them last summer. My granddaughters loved them. I let them plant them in big pots on their deck . They want more seeds this year.
I have some dwarfs from them someone gave me to try. I think I'm going to plant them out along the front. It will be fun to see what they look like too

I wondered what sunfield look like in full bloom, and i agree, they are very unusual, proportion is like its a giant head with relatively small petals just opening up. Looks very fresh. Orange/bright yellow grew on me this year,, i totally blame Serina! In all-yellow bouquets they really shine :) but my favourite are white! And havent Steve sent you some of his doubles? I thiught he did...
This year I'm doing "white night" and just like you I'm starting out with those and then as the season goes on I'm transitioning to a yellow sunflower called Jua Maya hybrid. This is also pollenless and is supposed to develop in 45 days!

I tried a bunch of varieties of sf for my flower farm last year, & I agree, the procuts are awesome! My favorite was White Lite, White Nite, & Plum. I'm going to be growing a lot of the procuts I grew last year, againthis year, & trialing a few new ones, like red, horizon, & orange DMR, & also trialing a few of the Sunrich series that "Sunflower Steve" suggests! & Then Sunfill purple & green. I am with you on the Sunfill blooms! I don't think that your were ugly, I thought they looked interesting! But I have seen some peoples sunfill blooms, & they were a little hideous! Lol.
I talked about this a bit, but it was rambling so I cut it from the video. But I think the reason why I was happy with my sunfills is because they weren't too big. Only about the size of a palm, because I grew with 6 inch spacing. I think they would look ugly if they were spaced out and had this massive disk. But if they were really big buds, then they would look even more like artichokes before blooming

Serina, have you tried the terracotta from SS? I purchased this year and am eager to see how they will be for fall bouquets! My favorite last year was the starburst lemon eclair.
The terracotta was so good! Maybe my favorite colour, such a perfect brown. But they were sold out when I ordered, so next year. I grew all the Starburst last year and liked them all.
I grew white nite last year and had no bug issues, but I don't have any bug issues on my white dahlias either. I would look at your other flower bug issues and use that as a guide.
I left them this year. I was using a lot of the sunflowers to condition new growing spaces that have lots of weeds. So I left the bottoms in the ground, and added some cover crop. I'll pull any stump left come March, but most of the roots will have rotted out over the winter
Strip most leaves, into a bucket of fresh water, then into a cool room for 12-24 hours. I will most likely pick the sunflowers every day or 2 next year, and then use my walk in cooler for them. There is lots that I just let bloom last year, because I planted more then I needed, so I just picked what was ready when I needed them and left the open ones to enjoy

Love sunflowers I didn’t manage to grow one full term they were eaten by slugs ,uk weather didn’t help so this year I’m determined to grow them 🤞

Do you have bug problems with the white nite? I found that to be the most favorite for bugs and I had to harvest them early at bud stage

My main pest is grasshoppers, and they eat everything. So I didn't notice anything worse on the whites
The cucumber beetles really tear up my sunflowers, especially the lighter ones.

Do plant sunflowers in the ground or in trays
I start some indoors before last frost and then direct sow when it's warmer to extend my very short season 🌻
I was doing seedlings last year, but will do more direct seed this year. Early ones I start in trays

Yup. I dont with sunflowers though, because they fight the weeds pretty good

What's your conditioning process for sunflowers?
Strip most leaves, into a bucket of fresh water, then into a cool room for 12-24 hours. I will most likely pick the sunflowers every day or 2 next year, and then use my walk in cooler for them. There is lots that I just let bloom last year, because I planted more then I needed, so I just picked what was ready when I needed them and left the open ones to enjoy

As far as I know sunflowers face east 24/7 and that is what they did in my gardens.

Sunflowers will turn to follow the sun a little when they are immature, but they all move pretty similar

How do you deal with deer pressure?
We don't have much. We are surrounded by orchards, and it causes more damage when they kill trees, so they prefer doing that, because they are evil
How long is your sunflower bed?
Bigger than my whole growing space aka my tiny yard lmao
Our beds are 50 feet long, and 4 feet wide (18 path, 30 growing)
Why wouldn't you save the seeds?
No pollen
I don't seed save because it's complicated to do ot properly, and my time is limited

Lol, its 30 minutes of sunflower selections, so you're best to check out some of the summer harvest vlogs, till we have some new ones in April. Cause till then, there will be lots of seed obsessing, lol
Wondering if sunflowers require staking?
I wouldn't grow them if they did. They can blow over in crazy storms, but will also stabilize each other if there is a patch

Seems odd to take the time to watch and/or comment on a video about sunflowers then…
Very strange then that you chose to watch 23minutes of a video clearly stating it is about Sunflowers. Next time, when a title states it is about something you dislike, it would be a good idea to skip it so you have more time for stuff you enjoy. You will discover your mental state to be much healthier and happier.
