I was able to fit an additional 4 minifigs from a smaller set I got some time around the lego movie. It had vintage space minifigs in yellow and pink, white as well, and I think Benny was in it as well. This set also made me realize I've had an og blackton minifig floating around in my collection.
My childhood was the era of Johnny Thunder and the adventures line , i want some of those sets remastered! The new Lego indy stuff is holding me over for now
Fantastic review. I believe the Lego designers deliberately made the Galactic Explorer II bigger not only to fit in more fun detail, play features, and display space for the minifigures but also to be proportionate with adult hands to capture the same feeling of handling the Galactic Explorer I when fans were kids back in the day.
I had the vintage model, I have the new modern version. It was a blast putting the ship together. It’s a perfect nod to vintage LEGO fun and imagination. They REALLY knocked it out of the park with this set. ❤
@@Paul_1971 likewise i had this set, and still do (mostly) i think in pieces in a giant box now mixed in with lego our kids grew up which is not the worst of fates for them. Something i noticed as a huge lego collector, is that this set uses no stickers whatsoever just like they used to back in those days where everything was printed. Almost all sets these days use stickers, even the big expensive ones!
My love for Space Lego as a kid was limited to staring at the pictures in Christmas catalogs and weekly newspaper ads, unfortunately. I had some cheap knock-off Lego sets that were fun to make ships with, though. The ships had to be fairly small, otherwise they'd fall apart. I longed for proper Legos, since I knew based on the one tiny Lego set I got from an Aunt for Christmas that they would actually hold together.
As someone too young to have been there for classic space, but grew up admiring the builds and open ended play i adore this set, it captures everything i would want in a space theme today and i bought this set, which i only ever do when i support what lego is doing, and im glad i did, it really is a fantastic piece
Just bought assembled this yesterday and I love it. Every little detail of it is so cool, but I think my favorite out all of them has to be the control panel tile that shows a screen resembling the game Asteroids. Such a fitting and amusing detail. On top of that, the designer also created two alternate ship designs with instructions that you can get online or through the Builder app. For $100, this is probably one of the most bang-for-your-buck sets that I’ve seen in a while.
So glad you've talked about this Michael, your original Lego pace video is one of my favorites of yours, and I think this may be the best spaceship Lego has ever made
This was a fun build, not hard at all, but just relaxing and enjoyable to put together. I love her lines and how well she fits in the Classic Space Universe. It's a perfect set, and well worth it's price.
Excellent video and look at this cool Lego Set. Like you said, they kept the original dna and it's improved/upgraded where needed. In this case, bigger is def better with this new set. Thanks for making this video. Nothing takes me back as much as the Classic Lego theme.
I almost crapped a brick! I did'nt know they put the lab in the back! Those sleeping quarders look great. If only they'd put the alternate builds on the back of the box like the older sets did. I miss that. Thanks for the great review! :) I've REALLY been wanting this. Thanks for the video. :)
I used to own the original (along with several other Classic Space sets until a lady frying chicken decided to shower while frying and burned our apartment building down). I loved it so much. I really like this design as well. I love the ingenious way the arrows are built into the aft of the vehicle. I do dislike the number of vertical supports for the rear fin, and only used four in mine. Fantastic ship though, and - as always - it's great to see Lego Michael.
Michael you are Scotty! “This LEGO vid is taking forever to create. It’s going to be at least another week.” 24hrs later…”Done! Ya welcome!” Great job sir. 👍👍
Fantastic set full of brilliant solutions and great sci-fi look! I am sure that another generations of LEGO enthusiasts will relate to it as another classic LEGO Space set!
Utterly amazing. Thanks so much for this. I had the original set when I was 8 and this looks incredible. Just like back then though, I doubt I can afford it!
Wow, such a nostalgic set. I only had the smaller spaceships LL918 and LL924. Only the rich kids had the LL,928. wow, it was such a joy to play outside in the neighborhood. Up to six or seven kids flying around their houses with their lego ships. Nowadays I see no kids any more. Are they sitting inside playing with their gameboyxyboxwii system. Thanks Michael for your lovely review. Keep up the good work.
I had the vintage one as a kid and it was one of my pride and joy pieces for a long time. Just placed an order for the new one after watching this. Won't have time to put it together for a while, but really excited to dig into it once I do.
I never was a big fan of lego, other than the speed champions sets, which I still buy, but this video has now made me buy this set, great video Michael.
In my opinion the raised moon base plate in old gray is the best thing LEGO did for the space theme. There is even a blue one with studs in the craters representing the ocean ground. The old manual books? Man, o man it was art on its own. & today? Today we have stickers! 🤭😂
About the point with the LL 928 marking. Benny's spaceship was marked LL 929 and treated as the spiritual successor to the Galaxy Explorer in the context of the Lego Movie. The use of the original number on this set feels like either a direct remake in the contemporary 'no lunar plates' Space line or it might be akin to the US Navy using certain ship names again after the original has been retired or otherwise taken out of service. CV-8 and CV-12 are both considered the USS Hornet in the same way that CV-6, CVN-65 and the CVN-80 are all the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier.
Very cool! And great video too. I definitely am blown away by the Explorer being at spiritual heart of this new one, but ageee that it's deserving (and needing) an ID number that reflects (in universe) that it's the next/newer model. In keeping with that, I gotta admit, it would've been nice if they could have included an original astronaut/spaceman but with a new high-level rank marking of some kind to give a feeling of one of the ones we had having risen in rank over these year.
Fantastic video as always! I randomly saw the mark 2 in my local Lego store and immediately bought it, no second thought. I have to mention, that the price on it is also quite ok, and not stupidly high like with a lot of other Lego stuff. Now I’m hoping for some classic Lego castle action….
Superb video of an awesome new set, I have this Mk2 waiting for me under the Xmas tree, and the original on display, so soon I'll have the two together side by side. Definitely my favourite Lego line and era.
i imagine those two mugs the robot has are filled with Soylent Green Tea, it is simply a delicious beverage that has all the vitamins and nutrients needed for each meal. Lego is definitely my absolute favorite toy line that i do not collect, i have had many Lego sets in the past and was always a huge fan of the Knights and the Pirates but i always end up reaching a point where i realize they are too expensive and take up too much room for me. i need ALL the room i can get for my extensive 3 3/4" collection. Lego sets and figures are awesome though.
You ought to check out the new space line. Not only are the sets cool to play with, they have a basic framework of a narrative, that you can figure out yourself, as you build, collect, and play. Additionally, the Space them chris-crosses multiple other lines. Chiefly City, Technix, and friends. The modular docking system works across all three lines, letting you play with all three, in a single atoryline of your choice. Other little details include the color coding of the space suits, based on what division the astronaut works for. Green for science, blue for operations/piloting, and yellow for engineering. Even the various, creatively designes little robots have color markings for what division they belong to. Definitely give them a look, even if it's just playing with someone else's collection.
Never had the chance to have it back in the 80's -was one of my top 3 dreamed toys- (impossible to buy in my country) but a close friend that went to U.S.A. bought one and I remember having a blast playing with the ship set together with him (thanks Adrian!!) Thanks so much for bring such detailed review that brings a lot of joy and the best of memories. The new one rocks but still love the lunar plates of the original one :) -sorry for my english- Love the channel \m/

You’re absolutely right about the Galaxy Explorer, being the flagship… As a kid, I was never really into Lego until I saw that particular set, and to me it was the first vehicle that looked like a viable, spacefaring craft in the context of imagination but also had that aesthetically pleasing classic spaceship look. I like this one has evoked that vibe albeit with a bit more of a streamlined appearance.
well, they did LL-929: that's Benny's spaceship. The "-B" thing however would have been kind of cool :-) I really love this set and the secondary build models are great too.
I don't know if anyone has already said or if you care but lego released alternate building instructions on their website for mark II's of 2 of the smaller classic space ships, the space cruiser and space transport. You do have to disassemble the explorer to do these, unless you buy 2 more haha
I have my 80s Space Diorama with the Vintage Galaxy Explorer, the Space Crusier and the Space Transport in it. I recently acquired the Neo Galaxy Explorer "Mark II" and It is amazing the way Lego Designers reimagined. Now, I need to buy two more sets, in order to create the Neo Versions of the other 2 Classic Spaships 😭
A very impressive reimagining of a classic. So tempted to get this but... Well, space isn't just the final frontier, it is a limiting factor for collectors like me. And I still need a place to sleep. The design and engineering of great LEGO sets like this always impresses. A great review and a very appreciated and appropriate set of Trek references.
I bought this set not long ago, but I haven't yet gotten round to building it. This is going to be the Boxing Day project for me. And another set will be bought in time - because of the additional builds. Oh yes, the additional builds.
That's hilarious: Even before clicking on the video, in my head, I was playing Scotty's anti-Excelsior line from 'Star Trek III: The Search For Spock'. Haha! Michael and I were on the same wavelength. :)
Great video. Great set. Though I had Legos, I found more fun out of using cardboard to make my Starships. Jut that didn't mean I did not like my Legos. The Space sets were always a favorite of mine, Great review.
Thanks Micheal. I loved the Star Trek allegory. I've had mine for months, and I also incorporated an old blue "Space Brick" with the logo I had into the rear cargo door. She now sots proudly next to my "original" LL918 Space Transport from 1978.
I found my original GE instructions yesterday but also look up the Cosmic fleet voyager …not sure but it might have been even bigger and it had a few cool features loved the angled bulkhead pieces
I paused this video halfway through to call my wife - who is doing last minute Christmas shopping - to tell her “I know what I want for Christmas”. Fingers crossed I’m getting this Galaxy Explorer! Thanks for this review.
i used my lego points for this, i got the feels from it. I remember opening the original Christmas morning which led to a childhood of lego kits for christmas and birthdays. Still happens 43 years later

I had some issues with building this set. The frame was monotonous to construct, and it wasn’t until bags five and six did I really start having fun with the build. It took me about seven hours, including snack breaks and the such, to complete the set. I was thinking about purchasing as many as I could instead of the UCS Star Destroyer, and then using the parts from those sets to build my own Mandator 1-class Battlecruiser (Republic At War) LEGO MOC since the main body silhouette reminds me of a Super Star Destroyer. I may be going against the cosmic wind with this thought , but I wonder if Lego will ever have a set based upon the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser.
The excelsior nod to Having BV go brick at the end , it was perfect
I was able to fit an additional 4 minifigs from a smaller set I got some time around the lego movie. It had vintage space minifigs in yellow and pink, white as well, and I think Benny was in it as well.

The LEGO Space and Castle sets were my favorites! . Thanks for this fantastic video to take me back to memory lane once again.

As Benny would say: "SPACESHIP! SPACESHIP! SPACESHIP!"
Great review! I’m headed out to go buy one right now!
Amazing!
Funny thing about mine is that I personally added Katana swords to the front in order to differentiate it from others who own this exact same set
