What fun! And so unusual, since their tv appearances were so rare! Walter’s dressed like he’s teaching a class - which he is! Glad you’re feeling better, Nick!
I saw them in concert in New Zealand a few years back. Ended up seeing a few band members at a bar later doing a little impromptu performance. Freddie Washington was playing bass. What a legend. Unfortunately Donald wasn't there.
I just saw that two old Steely Dan performances from 1973 on the Midnight Special were recently released on UA-cam. 'Show Biz Kids' is so totally worth watching. Skunk Baxter was in great form and I don't think I've ever seen background singers have so much fun. It's 4:24 that you won't regret.
@@jessicalee7119 I envy you! I was 12 in 1973, a little too young for concerts, and by the time I was old enough they were no longer a touring band. Thankfully I got to see them a couple of times before Walter passed.
@@61hink ~ here's the fun part... they were the opening act for The Guess Who! lol. I love the Guess Who, but Steely Dan entered my soul that day! So glad you got to see them!! I saw them in Chicago the summer before Walter left us. It's a bittersweet memory.
Just last night I watched a video of Steely Dan's first television appearance, just five guys and two back-up singer ladies, with Walter Becker playing bass and Skunk Baxter on lead with Denny on rhythm guitar. Very interesting.
We were avid Letterman watchers back then, so I probably saw this when it aired, but I've since seen it several times on UA-cam. Incredible performance of one of my (many) favorite SD tunes. Especially great to see the late, great Mr. Becker movin' and groovin! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
There's a tribute band in New Zealand called Steely Fan. I saw them at a Jazz festival here, and they drew the biggest crowd of the weekend. They did the music justice with great vocals and musicians. I spoke with them after, and they were all from various bands and we're inspired by similar SD cover bands on UA-cam. Sadly, it was only a one off, but they said they'd be back next year with some different songs. Can't wait.
Thank You 💕 Thank You. I have been looking for some Steely Dan video and it's all blocked. I was playing this song in my kitchen just now and put in Josie on UA-cam and there You were you are a Saint.
The Two Against Nature live DVD is great. Highly recommended to have in your collection. Particularly amazing performances of Kid Charlamagne, Babylon Sister and Pretzel Logic.
I never realized how much Donald Fagen looks like Ray Charles when he plays and sings. Just put a dark pair of shades on him to complete the illusion! The mannerisms and the way he sways are almost identical.
It always amazed me that from the mid 70's to the early nineties they did not tour. There must have been huge pressure from there label to due so especially early on.
Very cool. Always love seeing SD. Check out The Dukes of September. Donald, MM and Boz Scaggs. I recently watched them do Kid Charlemagne, so good. Also I Keep Forgetting by Michael. So many other great songs. Very cool show. Also recently watched Donald get inducted into the jazz hall of fame, also very cool to watch him play with stand up base, drummer, guitar and a female singer. That's how I picture Donald if he were a performer in a New York jazz club in the 1950's lol. Great stuff Nick..
Always thrilled for Steely Dan. 😉👍 Thanks, Nick. You’ve read my mind - I was thinking of live Steely Dan requests. Glad you’re feeling better. Take care of yourself. Also, sending love and strength to deal with your family issue. Hope everyone is ok. 😽❤️

There’s an interview out there that Paul S did w Donald. I’ve never been able to watch it all the way through, because Paul won’t shut up. At least the part I’ve seen, Donald is lucky to get a word in.
Walter's face is so detached looking, it's like he's on auto pilot. Don't know if you saw it, but they just put up a Midnight Special performance from Steely Dan on UA-cam... Show Biz Kids. They kill it of course. Jeff Skunk Baxter was lead guitar instead of Derringer from the studio.
He always had that look while playing but he was actually the most loquacious one. Once Walter started talking, he would engage the audience for a good 5 minutes.

You can also see Will Lee (show band bassist who’s also worked with SD as percussionist) dashing in from the left to hit some asynchronies near the end. Very glad camera DOESNT show Schafer, who is a horrible stage hog esp when SD is around. (His “directing”during SDs Hall of Fame songs is intolerable.)
Nick, thanks for doing this clip today. If you and Lex want to get into live Steely Day, then you must tee up Pete Gizzi's clip from their 2000 show in (I think) the Sony studios in NYC, where they played "Cousin Dupree".ua-cam.com/video/Ua3-V0zg7BY/v-deo.html. The Dan are a difficult act to fully enjoy live, because they don't translate well to large venues. Walter Becker cracks me up! His stage presence is like an engineer or a librarian while he kills it on the guitar!

I had the good fortune and pleasure of shaking Walter's hand twice, 1974 and 2003, he was quite a character, funny and gracious. I did wash my hand.
