Lesson learned for me is that I am willing to pay the few dollars extra and go directly to the manufacturers sight to ensure I'm not getting counterfeit. I have an Amazon Prime account but I only use it to buy things that are linked to official sellers who also stock genuine things on their own sight. Ray Ban put out a video on how to authenticate their sunglasses because the Eastern European countries became experts in counterfeiting their brand.

That is a counterfeit 692 vanguard. From a quick glance I would say the stamp is definitely a good tell. Other things I can tell from the video is the butt/guard are all wrong, I don't remember ever seeing black ones, also the hollow grind looks wrong, although I can't quite tell without measuring it.

A $100 knife for $20. You didn't get ripped off. You got a nice knife that you seem to enjoy for almost no money. It may not be a Buck, but it's still a useful knife. If the blade had snapped or the handle fell off, then you would have gotten ripped off. Since it's a user and not a collector knife, use it and enjoy it.

Not all of the Buck knives have the anvil logo on them. The price should've been the one and only sign that you were gonna get robbed. I've only ever seen Vanguards go for $65 and up. To be fair to the knife dealer, I've seen the Vanguards that aren't brass and cocobolo, and they look like this online, with only the BUCK name with their copyright symbol, so he wasn't wrong to assume, but if you told him the price, and the fact that you got it on Amazon, that should've given him pause to go grab a more experienced person working there.

"Counterfeit" may not be the exactly appropriate word. I ordered a Buck knife online, to replace one I'd lost for about half the retail price. It seemed to measure up in quality to the original in every way.
The factories in China where most things are made, are notorious for their "back-door" deals, where they may sell off a part of a production run without the permission of their client. It may in fact be the same knife, so is it really "counterfeit?"

No I haven't. After looking at your knife, it sure not a Mesa. I like yours more than a Mesa. I'll keep looking and will let you know if I find anything.

I suspect you did get your knife from eBay. In the video you mentioned that you may have gotten it off Amazon, and I wanted to mention that if you did get it from Amazon would would be able to see that in your order history. Your purchases are recorded there going back for several years and probably since the first one.

Stick with amazon or buck knives website. Amazon if selling will have got their stock from buck knives directly so make sure it ships from amazon and not someone else.

Well, it's a bit hard with Bucks newer knives to know if they are real because a lot of them are made in China anyway and they don't have the symbol for the year it's made unless it's their Premium line like the 119, 124, 110, 112. The classics. Then they have a Select Line which are mostly made in China and don't have the date code on them. Unless it's a classic model like their 119 or 124, I won't mess with their Chinese line, too overpriced. The Mini Iceman knife is $40 here in Canada. I could get a decent fixed blade, full tang knife for that price!!

I had a Buck Pilot 190 that was made in China and unfortunately that was one of my best knives I ever had. And yes they do have the year mark on it as well, at least my 190 did. It was made in 2006.... man I miss that knive.

    • @ricev7071
      @ricev7071 5 років тому +1

your right, they do have a date code on them. To each their own I suppose, I carry fixed blade knives more than anything now. they're just more reliable and can do more with them. If I do carry a folder, it would be my 110, it has stood the test of time. a man killed a bear with one and framed it.

You get what you pay for, heck a counterfeit may be better than a Buck. And why someone want to know when their budget knife was made? There is no lineage or matter when it was mass produced. I can see counterfeiting a knife of value but a budget Wal-mart special? I don’t know if the juice is worth the squeeze

    • @TheReTurnersFlips

jamison korando I was thinking the same thing. As much as I want to like Buck their quality has plummeted over recent years, even on their American made models. My genuine 110 went dull taking meat of a deer hide. They used to be kings of the Knife world but have since turned into just another budget friendly blah company. And technically since China's copyright laws don't match up to American they are alliwed to make knives like this and sell them. That's how branda like Ganzo get away with it.

There are a few BUCK knife's made in China under strict tolerances. I'm not saying I agree with it, but counterfeit, I think not. I have a Buck 853 Small Selkirk and it's made in China. It comes with the same warranty as a knife made in USA. AGAIN I"M NOT SAYING ITS NOT A GOOD THING. I'm just saying that it is not a counterfeit.

I have a "Buck" knife that I got for about $6 on ebay. I am totally sure that it is NOT a true Buck knife. I don't even think that the listing said "Buck" on it. But my Knife has "BUCK" stamped lengthwise on the side of the blade. It is a poorly designed knife with the possibility of cutting oneself with if you put your finger into the "finger cut-out" near the end of the blade. I sincerely hope that the folks of Buck USA had nothing to do with this knife.
Also, that "Buck" knife in the video... I have seen a bunch of similar knifes claiming to be "Buck" on eBay for about $7.
As a rule of thumb... If they only want $6 or $7 dollars for a knife (with free shipping) it probably is NOT a REAL Buck Knife.
(Oh... and if the are Quotation Marks around the word "BUCK" it is definitely fake)

So instead of buying a $100 knife for $20 you bought a $20 knife for $20...OK
Best to do your research before you buy and not afterward. I feel it is the buyers responsibility to know what they are buying, I never rely on the person selling me something to educate me on it.
I buy and sell a lot of knives , personally I’m not a big fan of buck knives but I do fool with.
You want to keep an eye out for the ones NOT marked USA since they date to before 1968 and are worth a premium.
The older sheath knives are rather distinctive and very uncommon
