When Tommy says the back of his guitar is made of maple, that's not the same family of woods most Europeans/Americans would recognise as maple. We would classify Queensland Maple as an Acacia, sonically its closer to Koa than European maple.

Thank you! I was wondering about Queensland Maple, and how it might be different.

Donald Trump hey don’t put Australia 🇦🇺 Down ..... under 😂 .. burn !! If you lived here you’d love it and everyone wants see our weird mammals thank you !!! One even lays eggs ! Maton should do a platypus eggshell inlay with some echidna spines making the word maton on headstock !

Not s putdoen to say WLD Maple is not “ maple” but a different timber from a unique Aussie tree species. OZ has many “ different” timbers being utilised by Australian luthiers, producing beautiful looking and sounding instruments. 😊

@@pamelahay6242 I agree, another Aussie acacia - Australian Blackwood - sounds great and can come with a beautiful Koa like flame pattern. Custom Matons use some beautiful Aussie woods such as red gum for bindings and rosettes as well. Shame Matons are so pricey in the UK.

Yes, “Blackwood” is lovely. I had a old colonial beautiful drop sided rectory table made from Tasmanian Blackwood up until Feb 2021. Lost it in a catastrophic budhfire here in Western Australia, together with a 1982 Maton CW80 6 string ( QLD maple back, side, neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard; a highly regarded dreadnaught favoured by Country & Western players (CW). Lost 2,000 40 YO vynil & CD collection too. Werr not on Bushfire Alert until advised to Leave or Defend. 90 minutes warning under a blue sky with no smoke, no sirens,. Hard to believe it might actually happen. Tended as best to horses left behind then escaped as trees burst into flame on adjacent property. 56 homes in our valley over the next 2 hours.
Thankfully our horses survived. The Maton did not.

My first guitar at age 12 in 1967 was a Maton CW80/12 -- meaning a Country and Western 12 string. Big sound! Played folky stuff and sang in bistros for pocket money.
My second guitar at age 15 was a Maton Fyrebird, a solid body electric with a Bigsby tremolo arm. Pretty cool for a teenage boy to play pop and rock covers in mates' garages.

At 7.23 he comments about playing in australia as a young guy and having to make a big sound to get noticed. I think it's interesting that Keith Urban said exactly the same thing about his 'apprenticeship' as a young musician in Australia. Seems to be the way to go.....

The Queensland Maple Tommy mentioned is Flindersia brayleyana (there is only one tree by this name, the universal scientific name) and is a rainforest tree here in Australia where we have used many European common plant names to describe our flora...which, while understandable, has lead to endless confusion.

Since my twenties I've been an Eric Clapton fan so every time he came to Australia I'd be in the queue to get good seats. Then in the 1980s I got some great seats right up front and Tommy Emmanuel was opening for Clapton. Well Tommy was amazing, just him and his Maton the only effect I could hear was a bit of delay. He did the percussion thing on the top of his guitar and he was brilliant. Clapton was overshadowed by Tommy's playing as he will always be.

I wonder how many Matons he’s had. It seems like he goes through guitars faster than I go though strings. I get it - he’s tough on guitars but makes me wonder if Maton is built to last. For the price they want for them they better last, but seems like a gamble.
