Thanks for this video , I find it very helpful , I am re learning guitar after taking off for many years , so I think you can imagine my frustration ! But I wanted to ask you about pick hand movement , I have seen you play amazingly fast and moving at the wrist , I have also seen you play with your wrist locked and using your elbow , now I was not a shredder but when I played fast , I used my elbow for the movement ( forgot to say if I could play as fast as you do in this video , that would be fast enough for me ! ) so should I change my style to using my wrist ? This is what most players are saying to do ( except for troy Grady ) FYI - I only use alternate picking ( when playing fast ) can you help or advise me ? Thank you !

I encourage people to learn how to pick with their thumbs first. This is the slowest way of picking, but, I find it to be the most accurate. The video (I think you watched) where I demonstrate how I pick my fastest demonstrates the three stages of picking I do: thumb, wrist, elbow.
I do not make a conscious decision to change my picking mechanics at any given speed. My body just takes over and does what needs to be done to play at whatever speed I'm trying to hit.
The biggest thing is to make sure you are playing accurately. I wouldn't worry too much about all the possible little specifics involved just yet. Maybe if you've hit a wall and can't seem to get any better, then it's time to get your technique evaluated. However, if you consistently practice and play with accuracy, that will take care of most issues people run into all by itself.

Doing this exercise higher up most definitely makes it easier. If starting on the 5th fret creates to big of a stretch for you so you can't perform this, you can always move up higher on the fret board to reduce the stretch and make it easier to play.
I actually do use this approach in a lot of playing I do. This is especially helpful in performing good pull-offs. Training your fingers to have as little movement as possible increases your accuracy, and in turn, increases your speed.
That doesn't mean I always keep my fingers planted, but I will keep a finger or two down from time to time depending on the piece of music I'm playing.

Hi, first of all I really like your videos, very helpful, I was just wondering how do I use the major scale on power chords, it always sounds strange, it would be very helpful, thanks a lot, keep up the good work \m/

+Mahmoud Gabr Can you tell me what power chords you are using and what Major scale you are using? If you are using a C Major scale, you need to use the power chords that go along with it. My guess is that you are not playing in key. That would be when the Major scale would sound weird. I'll do a video on this. It will be up in about a week. In the meantime, the more info you can give me the better :)

+Mile High Shred frankly, I don't think about the notes (power chords) I just play wgat sounds nice as long as I keep my root note ex: (C) so when I use the c minor pentatonic scale sounds great but if I play a C major scale on the same riff it doesn't sound right, hope I've made myself clear :)

Mahmoud Gabr Thank you for the response. Yes, I understand what you mean. What is happening is you are not playing in the correct key. I would still need to hear exactly what chords are being used, but most likely you could be playing in the key of C minor, which is why a C minor pentatonic scale fits. A C Major scale would definitely clash. I'll do some chord examples to show why the two scales won't always work in the video I'll put together. It should be up Wednesday, but it might be a day or two late.

After months looking for solution, I found it !
I didn't know what to do... I'm stuck to a Symphony X solo that I can't play faster than 115 bpm. (original is 136bpm)
Now I know what I have to do to get over it!
    Thank you very much !

Btw, how would you apply this to economy picking: (alternate with directional changes like MIchael Angelo Batio combined with simple sweeps). I'm tackling this:
    www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/alcatrazz-too-young-to-die-too-drunk-to-tab-s24954t1
And none of the things I've found have helped me, including playing slow.
I can play it with legato but I want to pick all the way through. See bars 66 to 80.
    What I do:
    1st String Up-Down-Change Slanting
2nd and 3rd Strings: Up Up Down Down
    1st String: Down
    Repeat for another chord.
Getting the triplet feeling between picking and sweeping is what's holding me.
    Thanks!

Well, this is a first. After looking at and listening to the Songsterr file, and comparing it to the studio recorded song, I was inspired to just transcribe it myself.
Some of Songsterr is incorrect. Most of it sounds and looks right. I've got the guitar pro file and pdf ready to send to you, complete with the picking direction I'd use. Now, I used pull-offs in the transcription because it sounds like that's what Malmsteen is doing.
