- This is another excerpt from a Reggae Strong interview conducted by our late Director, Stafford Ashani, with Joe Higgs, a legendary figure in Jamaican musical history. The interview was conducted near Canarse Pier, Brooklyn, NY, on July 15, 1990 (too close to the airport), and in this section, Joe describes his early days with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer and also gives a quick rundown of the precursors to reggae; ska and mento, and the musicians who should be credited for their roles in the music's development.
The full interview with Joe Higgs and numerous other reggae artists, represent a vital oral history of Jamaican culture. Most were shot (on analog video) between 1984-1994. I am currently in the process of digitizing, mastering and compiling these interviews for preservation and public consumption. If you are a lover of Jamaican musical/cultural history, please lend your support to this long-term project by becoming a Step Lively Video channel member, or making a small donation by clicking on "$Thanks", under this or any video. Your support will be greatly, deeply and heartically appreciated.
Rest in peace and love, Stafford Ashani and Joe Higgs.
