Sybil becoming a nurse was the single most useful thing anyone of the Crawley family ever did with their lives. All the other ladies sat around being pretty and bored and the men spent all day running Downton into financial ruin. Edith at least was looking for something to do, like writing, and Mathew was decent enough at managing his wealth. But their main cause in all their lives seemed to be to get the girls married and have an heir born, a task they gloriously failed at for a decade. Mary only started to take interest in anything but herself after her husband's death. Sybil was such a lovely spirit.
God, their love story was the best thing I'd followed on Downton... The way their relationship progressed, I was certain they'd be together forever. And then... damn... I still watch the series mainly for Tom but it still feels so empty without Sybil... and I can feel how lonely he feels without her too. They'll forever be my favorite couple from any television series.
+IInTheSkyWithDiamond I agree completely. I feel like in the later series the writers payed no attention to his character other than to provide a catalyst for Edith and Marys' actions.
"What did you think, you'd marry the chauffeur and we'd all come to tea?" "Actually yes. And while we're on that subject I might move to Dublin with him and have his baby. Cool?"
I think Sybil isn't so much rebellious as ahead of her time; she understands her situation regarding her family's position, she just doesn't agree with it completely. That's why I think she was so hesitant at first about Branson: she was torn between doing what she wanted and doing what was expected of her. It's not about whether they actually love each other(they do!) but how hard it is for her to leave everything she's ever known behind for a different life entirely.
Exactly! If not for WW1 Sybil wouldn't have dared to leave with him, but working as a nurse showed her that there was something more to life than just the role of a wife and a mother. She learned her value as a person, her inner strength and she saw that her job made her feel fulfilled and useful in ways the role her family had planned for her did not. She couldn't go back to her meaningless life from before the war, not even for the love of her family.
they're so imformal with each other......doesn't stand when she comes in, granbs waist, asking him whats wrong, flirting, for all the branson haters, they obviously love each other and are more comfortable with each other than any other couple on the show.
Exactly!!And I love that they are informal and dont even try to act 'properly'.And Branson isnt isnt scared to be informal with her because he knows for a fact she would never give him away. They are informal, yet respectful. For example when they ran away,Sybil slept in a double bed by herself while Tom slept on a chair beside her with a coat as covers💟
I think that she really loves him. Maybe the excitement and rebellion is something that might have made him an attractive suitor, but I think that she realized that she loved him otherwise she wouldn't have left her family which she loved so dearly.
And her standing there looking at all the splendour of her family and being disappointed her family seeing him as just a chauffeur and considering that maybe it isn’t much too lose
Branson's presented from early on as impulsive in a lot of ways; it's very consistent with his character. And Sybil likely wouldn't have gone for him before the war, but the loss of so many rich young men in WWI did a lot to break down those social boundaries in real life. It's not the show being unrealistic. Sybil talks about how every boy she danced with was dying on the continent; this was accurate - there's a reason they call it the "Lost Generation."
I do not known why but I always found he was extremely pushy. Like when he says "you're too scared to admit it but you're in love with me", when she gave no real sign of her affection imho... I never quite understood their relationship. Not as much as Mary/Matthew or Edith/Gregson.
@@Alagueesia She is always seeking him out. I notice most times they interact, Brandon is working and Sybil is the one seeking him out. Otherwise they wouldn't interact much at all. I think he is very prideful, that's his main flaw - but honestly, by today's standards, he is the only one who sees the Crawleys and the social system they represent for what they truly are.
Oh give him a break.... when he said that, he was only trying to understand how she felt about him. He confessed his feelings first, she turned him down and could have let him go. but the second he said he would leave downton forever, she begged him to stay. You can reject someone then beg them to stay, it confuses them. If he was pushy, then why does she spend every moment thinking about him. About how alike they are, his touch (from 11:40) and the things he says. She just needed to admit it to herself. I loved these two together and you two being so negative about it won’t ruin that for me.
ETA (because I ran out of room): This is also probably the reason that Mary felt she had to settle for Sir Richard (initially, before he blackmailed her), rather than find a nicer, cuter dude of her own social class whom she could keep ignorant of her dalliance with Pamuk; there weren't many left. And the show has a lot of other brief inter-class flings in s2, like Robert and Jane and Edith and the farmer. WWI probably did more than any other event in the 20th century to change the social order.
just a reminder, although Sir Richard wasn't poor by any means, socially he wasn't of the same class as the Crawleys - he was "nouveau riche" and this shows in some of his social faux-pas moments (like when he calls Lady Rosamund "Lady Painswick" and has to be corrected)
Watching this video, I formed a new OTP: Branson/cars. but all joking aside, these two are my favorite couple. I would love it if you re-uploaded parts 1 and 3 on here.
Since Allen Leech is now a top-billed actor for the show, I hope that means we'll see more of Branson and Sybil in Season 3. For his and Sybil's sake, I hope he has calmed down a bit, and is grateful with the Crawley family for not putting up a bigger fight. I really want them to live happily and at peace with the fam. He should try to win their hearts. Then again, he IS Branson, so I highly doubt it :/ lol
I know! He's a cool character and I love their relationship but the bit where he explains her job as 'taking tea to Randy officers' felt like a kick to the chest. She worked really hard to be a good nurse and definitely did more than that. I think part of the reason he's rude is 'cos he just wants to be with her already and I guess sometimes when you love someone u push their buttons 'cos u want to help them in the direction u think is best. Also he's just a fiery young Irishman 😊
"You're too scared to admit it, but you're in love with me". That's one of the main reason I really do not like or understand their relationship. I mean, he is really forceful in his way of getting her. I wonder why I never see people talking about that in comments. Am I the only one to think he is not so respectful of her choices or her feelings, until she ultimately gives up ? She even tells Mary he's "awfully full of himself". I do not know why she likes him treating her like she doesn't know best.
I guess i was thinking the same way first when i watched the show but then i remembered that all this event are in four years. They cant see eachother a lot and i think the writers only showed this moments because they were spread over 4 years. Tom stayed all war just for her it s quite long. Then from the moment they were together i loved their relationship so much they were so cute together !
It's not how I see that. She never told him that she doesn't want him or love him. She never told him to leave. When he wanted to leave, she stopped him. All he wanted was for her to make a choice and she couldn't give him a straight answer for years.
To quote a comment further up "I think that she really loves him. Maybe the excitement and rebellion is something that might have made him an attractive suitor, but I think she realized that she loved him otherwise she wouldn't have left her family which she loved so dearly"
So Branson's stalking pays big dividends as he's now in line to be king of the castle... I guess that is where the writers are headed. Makes perfect sense.
We always see this kind of stories with women, marrying rich guys then becoming princesses, it was so refreshing seeing this with a guy for a change. A poor but moral and hard working guy marrying a rich lady and he becoming the "prince", they lost her daughter but won a son.

@SocialAndPolitical I COMPLETELY agree. It is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Sybil and Branson is seriously my favourite plot line of this show.

Sorry, gotta disagree; this relationship *makes* the show for me, much more so than Mary and Matthew
She wanted to kiss him, but then changed her mind midway there.

Nearly finished making Season 1 (Part 1) of their story! Should be uploaded by tonight. :-) Check it out if you can

is it possible to get the other parts reuploaded?
No Sybil, she's dead =( Why????!!!!!!

I'm sorry...
any chance you cold reupload #3

She does

do u mean the moment at 11:58 ? I was wondering what that was about...
why is only part 3 available for me to watch but part 1 and 2 says not available in my country? can you fix this ilestpossible??
what is branson trying to do at 4:50?
Pour soup over some important military man
Such build up!
Don't hate Robert, it's not his fault. He thought it was the best for Sybil, he was as worried as the others!
8:48 No what? Yes what? What's under the lid???
Was it me, or was Cora quite rude to Tom after he said that he thinks Sybil enjoyed the work? The angry look on her face.
It would have been improper for him to talk of her that way. Really demonstrates the bullshit class gaps of the time.
Yes
I think Mary should just zip it. With her dead lover and all..
Where can I find the rest of these?
Part 1 was removed :(
