!! Graham Jackson got me into dumpster diving about a year ago when he visited me in California with a mutual friend. Since then I have been getting about 95% of the food I eat from dumpsters, and I eat better than I ever have before. If you've never been, go do it now!
OperationMaple I am definitely inspired! I think it is a nightmare how much food is wasted. What are the rules to dumpster diving at a grocery stores in Canada? Is it best to go after hours or any tips and tricks? I think you are a great group of guys! Way to get the right message out there!
Amanda Cindy Rose Thanks for reaching out!! I've added some links that were passed on from Graham to the description of the video. It should start you on the right track. All the best!!
PurpleGlobe sadly they lock up at lot of the dumpsters where i live and have security cameras ...one thing that really gets me is that they lock the dumpsters and there are several homeless people near the grocery store and dollar store.
To everbody: yeah, especially in Toronto I found dumpster diving to be VERY difficult because almost all of them were sealed trash compactors. I live in California now and I am lucky to have a few local, small grocery stores that don't lock up their dumspters, and that's what I'd suggest looking for in Canada or anywhere. Smaller, independent grocers typically can't afford the investment of a trash compactor or a lot of security. I also wouldn't be too deterred by video cameras, they're not going to look at them unless there is a crime committed. And if you're not 'breaking' anything to get in, you're not committing a crime.
I like your calm energy and how you don't bash these businesses, but explain why it makes sense from their perspective to throw food out. You've earned yourself a sub!
I actually see nothing wrong with this. I work in the bakery section of my grocery store, and the other day we had to throw out some boxed cookies that were "expired" by a few days. They literally just threw them in the trash. I think they should actually make it easier for people to claim these items, by maybe putting the food into brightly colored bags and setting them on the outside of the dumpster. People are starving everywhere, and someone could have eaten those cookies with no harm to their health. I've also seen them throw out an entire package of perfectly good eggs because ONE broke.
What about if an employee wants to take home some grocery items that were going to be tossed in the bin regardless?? Would the employee get in trouble?? They shouldn't. My Mother used to say it was a sin to waste food, and I do believe that. I have seen such abject poverty in other countries-literally starving babies-so when I see this kind of waste I feel ill!! I am going to start dumpster diving at the supermarket near me when the weather is warmer. I am going to try & convince my teenage son to go with me-wish me luck!! It is pretty high tech over there-I am sure they have cameras. If they come out & yell at us, there are some smaller grocery stores around. I wish there was a place I could go diving for mortgage payments-LOL!!
+Geny R. I'd say 99% of employees would be fired if they took anything home. Most grocery stores (especially Costco) will check employees bags and purses at the end of the shift and heaven help you if you took anything home. This is absolutely ridiculous considering most employees make minimum wage and would be helped considerably. It's gotten so out of hand in North America that it's absolutely ridiculous. Expired food doesn't surprise me it's when you see a huge dumpster full of food that's good until the end of the year or 2017 that blows my mind.
+Carol Bei I know my local Costco does donate food to food banks. There are frequently full carts and even racks full of food left out back for the food bank to pick up. I have only ever seen bakery items though...rolls, bread, even pies at times. I wonder if it is because these are made in house and there is no supplier to answer to. No employee freebies though.
comes down to liability my friends. Obviously people such as yourselves and I understand that there might be a small risk when ingesting the food we scavenge from the dumpster. Where on the one side, there absolutely no harm in giving this food away; the other side of the coin leaves companies in direct liability to be sued if someone were looking to purposely Sue said food store because they ingested a bad apple. If anyone is to blame it's your typical coffee too hot to drink soccer mom's who purposely ignore the warning on the cup, proceed to drink the overly hot coffee, and receive oral burns even with all the warning signs, then proceed to sue the place she got the coffee from. The lazy and stupid ruin it for the rest of us.
there is just as much liability when food is sold to the public. The difference is money. In most cases they can't be bothered to take the time to have it picked up.
This is crazy ! I'm spending like $150 / week on food when I live alone and I could just be taking this stuff for free ? . Are you kidding me ?!!!? I do martial arts and I eat a lot of food and the amount of money I spend on food in the recovery - phase of training is insane. I'm going to have to try this !
The funny thing is that the more black spots bananas have, the sweeter they are! They're the best for smoothies!! The light yellow and the green ones are not good, as they are not ripe enough.
I like how you explain things.. I am baffled that so much food is thrown away.. Just to share a little story a few years ago I had lost my job and I was struggling very much I did not care if I did not have food for me to eat but it broke my heart when I had to split slices of bread for my kids to eat and now knowing how these stores throw so much good food away had I known this back then I would have had not thought of it twice to go rescue some of this perfectly fine food that we could of so very much been thankful to have and eat. I am thankful now that I have learned to coupon and now I am even able to help others with my smart shopping I wish I could start Rescuing food to donate to people who really need it instead of it going to a landfill.. i live in the Usa.
You are a good person for doing this, got me thinking I will try this since I have the kids grown and just feeding myself. The money I save could be a vaca at the beach. Thanks guys.
I dumpster dive since I was 11 .I brought my best friend to show her how the stores throw away the food .I thought she was going to cry ! She wondered why but they do not donate it to people in need .You answered the question in your video. In my town there are kind people that donate their time and gas so that others can have food.Dumpster diving for me is so much fun .it helps my budget so much!
I've seen many a time, where people decide they don't want something and put it back on one of the random shelves. It could sit there like 12 hours or more before someone notices it and then gets thrown out. Then it sits there in the dumpster until you find it which could be days later (talking about meat and milk and other fresh items).
I prefer brown spots on bananas and if they get too bad, I freeze them as they make better banana bread than fresh. They're also better for you with brown spots. Trivia. :) Nice video!
i knew these products looked familiar and then I saw the 2 dollar off sticker, I work for the same company, when we can't sell we have no choice to chuck when the best before date comes along because you're right, no one purchases it
I work as a garbage man and after a little while on the job you really see how wasteful people really are. I've lost count of how many things that were perfectly fine get thrown out.
Well am planning to move to canada soon, hope to meet you and learn from you :) Food is food, and we shouldnt be wasting the precious bites, because many out there dont have enough for a meal as well.
I totally agree, there is way too much waste. Good on you for helping to reduce the amount that is going to our landfills. My only fear would be bacterial and mold growth on the food. I know if some foods are even partially defrosted bacterial growth can be a potential danger to some people. I think supermarkets are ensuring as much as possible that they can't be responsible for someone getting sick. That being said, I believe that we need to collectively change the way our supermarkets work and encourage them to donate excess food to organizations dedicated to helping homeless people, or those who just can't afford the cost of food. Thank you!
How do you prevent getting sick or food poisoning whilst doing this? I've gotten food poisoning a handful 5 times each year and that's without getting my food this way. I would be more than happy to eat this food but would just want to ensure that it has been cleaned.
We dumspter dive too.basically because we have a backyard chicken.our chicken loves to eat lettuce and all leafy veggies and fruits.so we pick in the groceries trash for them.its their special food as what my husband say.but we gi ve them regular chicken food of course.we also eat some of our finds if it is still in good condition especially those in sealed container.
What are the best stores to dumpster dive at for food? I notice that places like Wal Mart and Winn Dixie have the giant dumpsters that have the shoot that leads to inside the store so you can't access them really...
Where in Canada is this? Also, when would you say is the best time to go out and dumpster dive? I'd really like to get into it, but I just don't know where to start.

X Same deal at Costco. (unconscionable!!!) One bad piece of fruit or the packaging isn't 100% or they've run out of floor space and it's an instant trip to the compactor for landfill (sometimes cases full of food). (and you know the ridiculous prices they charge) Some stores just have a "no donate" policy and they throw imperfect items out.
Everything you are saying is true I am a dumpster diver and I see what is thrown away sad I work for a organic /natural food supermarket in Florida and alot is thrown away so if people can take the food from the dumpsters to eat it shouldn't be a promblem it will just whined up in a land fill I think that is where it goes there are alot of hungry children and families in the USA and all around the world and there is so much waste
So this is awesome and I'm all about this but I can't believe he took a bite of a dumpster peach he didn't wash first : o .... There's mold on the lid of the trash bin you just pulled it from.
I am on $726 per month social security check. I go dumpster diving cause of this fact and don't mind people knowing that is why I dumpster dive. I dumpster dive for my dogs, me and sometimes even my family, even though they do NOT like my diving cause of that 1 instance where the police stopped him just to harass my uncle, they did NOT even bring up dumpster diving. I keep dumpster diving and some days may find a good amount and some days don't find anything. I could ever live closer to the dumpsters, I would check them quite a few times throughout the day. They for awhile gave extra food stamps, even though the food stamps totaled the state minimum I am suppose to be getting in the 1st place $234, at the time I was getting $33, now I believe $68 is what I get until they go back down again and when I run out of food stamps and have no-more cash to use, I dumpster dive and when I need food again my uncle doesn't like going to town with me cause he knows I WILL check ever single dumpster I can when I am close to running out or have run out of food cause he did NOT want me to go to town, so I am Hoping to find food, I even find I rely on my own mother when I run out of food, she sometimes gives me cash when my dogs or me have nothing or very little, I know if something were to ever happen to her, I don't know and my uncles would move back to Illinois, I would have it very hard, much much harder than now, which I have done this before, I biked a total of 30 miles to and from, 15 miles to and 15 miles back, its gotten alot rougher cause of the heat. I could ever move to a town that had plenty of stores I would go dumpster diving alot. I wish mother would leave this town with me and hopefully live closer to transportation and businesses where it would be easier to go somewhere you needed to. THANK YOU! and GOD BLESS!
Those foods can still eat and cooked . It really hard to work to buy for that stuffs i wish i could be there so i can have that too or i can donate that to a lot of people that in hunger specially kids
Wow. The waste is unbelievable. These guys are young, but they are doing more to stem the waste big business participates in than most of us. Plus guys this age eat like Trojans-I'm sure they will go through all those pizzas and juice in no time flat.
Sort of ish. I'm on the east coast and dumpster diving is a grey area. If a sign says no trespassing then you could be charged with that. Typically all supermarket/shops are on private property. However, I dumpster dive every other day on the east coast and we haven't been stopped for it. Cops probably aren't going to care but if someone does call in and say you look suspicious they might have to remove you and if the owner of the property calls they could press charges but they probably won't. I have yet to venture to small business trash as I feel that they might be more apt to press charges. I stick with the big box chains. We were asked to leave at a strip mall last week but it was by security it wasn't a big deal we just left and probably won't go back.
or the Pizzas are Inferno Pizzas loaded with hot peppers and no one wants em , lol i found a bunch of those once , not bad if ya bother to take out the hot peppers
I don't see anything wrong doing dumpster diving, for me anything thrown inside a dumpster is free stuff for everybody who wants it recovered. I happen to pass by a Dunkin Donut one night, and they thrown bags of Bagels and boxes of donuts. I picked some of it, ate it and gave some to my friends in the Church. I'm still alive today luckily!
Mr do what you need to do in order to get corporate office owners look bad so that they can do better than that. You doing right and I will start back writing letters to corporate office staff and owners about what they do with food that can be given to hungry and needy people.
And you can still freeze some products in,cause the date on it doesnt really match ,its just the system. And ofcourse if you use your insticts, just smell at anny food, it sure works with me, if i goth a rare feeling about it, i just Dont eat it, even do the date is not expired, i trust my own guts, its sad that alot of people are from a mentality that its gros to go in the trash, they dont even care, dont have the awareness, lets hope we can reach out to so manny people ,it is ALL about education and human ecuality!!
Once found 1.5 kilos of perfectly edible chicken, four litres of milk and 800 grams of vacuum-packaged pork + some edible, a bit bumped veggies. Absurd. Unfortunately it is getting harder here to find those nice dumpsters.
In the U.S. 30% or more of our food is thrown out a year. Just think about the people that dont have a home or people who dont have lots of money could be doing a lot better if these were donated to a charity like churches or food pantries. And for the products that are not food like WORKING electronics or holiday decorations or anything like that could be donated to goodwill or the salvation army. Some people are wasteful. If people want to end world hunger then maybe do so e of these things. Might solve 1.) Make more jobs because the U.S. would save money on food and other products. 2.) Feed mpre of the population. Anyone ever think of that?!?

i went dumpster diving at aldi and i found some nice watermelons and a brand new clothes holder, dumpster diving is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
This is crazy ! I'm spending like $150 / week on food when I live alone and I could just be taking this stuff for free ? . Are you kidding me ?!!!? how did this work out for you?
Sorry what? $150/week and you live by yourself?? Where the hell are you shopping?

Great for banana bread too.

i just went out today and I found some good onions, peppers, peach, ginger, a brand new iron in its box, lots of tomatoes, apple, blue berries
You are a good person for doing this, got me thinking I will try this since I have the kids grown and just feeding myself. The money I save could be a vaca at the beach. Thanks guys.
Found 13 working 19 inch 720p tv/monitors my first week of diving, but even then the food is where it's at. Keep educating people my friend!
He's cute and inspiring
I dumpster dive since I was 11 .I brought my best friend to show her how the stores throw away the food .I thought she was going to cry ! You guys rock.... Love love love what your doing.
I've seen many a time, where people decide they don't want something and put it back on one of the random shelves. Then it sits there in the dumpster until you find it which could be days later (talking about meat and milk and other fresh items).
Smart divers avoid dairy and meat. But breads, veggies, etc are golden.
If nothing else I see a lot for the compost pile. Good video.
Im GOING to bed thinking about dumpster diving tomorrow.. lol
Hi. Are you guys still diving? Just came across your channel.
Great video/info..... and man, I WISH I had produce dumpsters like that near me!
I prefer brown spots on bananas and if they get too bad, I freeze them as they make better banana bread than fresh. They're also better for you with brown spots. Trivia. :) Nice video!
I love it how he is talking and the guys are grabbing food from behind him lol
Your voice is so soothing 😭 anyways I was thinking of dumpster diving to find food to give to the less fortunate
Great finds!! Love that you shared so much info; very beneficial!!
College students can now afford thanksgiving thanks to you!
Brought tears to my eyes. I love everything about this video and will be sharing it on FB. Thanx eh!
here in Philippines many people is hungry that's why I'm inspired to go there and be a dumpster diver
i knew these products looked familiar and then I saw the 2 dollar off sticker, I work for the same company, when we can't sell we have no choice to chuck when the best before date comes along because you're right, no one purchases it
The gentleman is very well spoken, explained it perfectly. Thank you.
If produce is in such abundance, they should probably drop the prices so the product moves faster. Idiots but that's a lot of food.
Yes an offer the unideal spotted fruit for a discount.
Lol but they wont becuae they like money and not the consumer.
I know someone who works at freshco and always hearing stories of how stuff needs to be thrown out and employees are not allowed to take any of it
Even thrift stores throw away picture frames, funiture, books, clothes and what ever didn't sell. Most of the time is because it was overpriced.
Bo za dużo produkują jeden przed drugim robią więcej ale robią jednorazówki bez wartosci
WOW ! ! ! Thank you so much for sharing ! You give me much to consider. I appreciate you for being brave---PD
What store is that? I haven't seen ant store that separately throws out the produce separately
m
How do you prevent getting sick or food poisoning whilst doing this? I've gotten food poisoning a handful 5 times each year and that's without getting my food this way. I would be more than happy to eat this food but would just want to ensure that it has been cleaned.
We dumspter dive too.basically because we have a backyard chicken.our chicken loves to eat lettuce and all leafy veggies and fruits.so we pick in the groceries trash for them.its their special food as what my husband say.but we gi
ve them regular chicken food of course.we also eat some of our finds if it is still in good condition especially those in sealed container.
What are the best stores to dumpster dive at for food? I notice that places like Wal Mart and Winn Dixie have the giant dumpsters that have the shoot that leads to inside the store so you can't access them really...
Wow man.. In my country dumpsters stink a lot and all the food in there is VERY descomposed!
Where in Canada is this? Also, when would you say is the best time to go out and dumpster dive? I'd really like to get into it, but I just don't know where to start.
The best time i find is 15 to 30 minutes after the store is closed but you can also do it before.
MrRacerhacker okay that's good too know.
But the best way is to explore.
MrRacerhacker oh I will. But I think this place is dead.
thanks this is an awesome video
Wooow! Dude, thanks for the video and information. I live right next to Wal-Mart and I think I will go do dumpster diving there and save lots of food.
Love your video! It was so informative and pleasent to watch! Thank you!
You guys are heroes
I have an issue with frozen stuff being thrown out so quickly after a fridge stops working, but I have gone to small stores where they literally refreeze stuff that is frozen and spoiled. It drives me nuts because this happens with some of the small Indian grocers I go to just to get a small taste of home and I have heard others complain about their bodegas and ethnic grocery stores doing the same.
I'm new to dumpster diving and I really want to start finding places to find thrown out food but all the grocery stores around my area have fenced in or locked dumpsters. Really is a shame.
I'm a big fan now!
At the Walmart I work at, we were told in orientation that food was donated and food that was left over from the deli was given to homeless shelters.
Wrong.
Every night I go in, they put all the leftover food from the deli all in a big bucket and take it to the trash.
X Same deal at Costco. (unconscionable!!!) (and you know the ridiculous prices they charge) Some stores just have a "no donate" policy and they throw imperfect items out.
+Carol Bei not anymore they recycle everything now. Even food waste is separated and handled by a third party.
Are you in the US or Canada? In the US they seem to have more sense and even sell returns as salvage.
What stores do u guys go to dumpster dive?
Everything you are saying is true I am a dumpster diver and I see what is thrown away sad I work for a organic /natural food supermarket in Florida and alot is thrown away so if people can take the food from the dumpsters to eat it shouldn't be a promblem it will just whined up in a land fill I think that is where it goes there are alot of hungry children and families in the USA and all around the world and there is so much waste
Thank you heros for what you do your appreciated
The first 1 minute of this video basically just described the society we all live in now these days LOL
Thank you for the information
Enlightening info guys, thanks.
I have filled my freezer & the freezer of must of my friends with chicken, pork & beef
thats awsome man glad to seei m not the only one who dose this
I'm willing to do this, but do you just go behind a store or what? Does the store care?
So this is awesome and I'm all about this but I can't believe he took a bite of a dumpster peach he didn't wash first : o .... There's mold on the lid of the trash bin you just pulled it from.
Mein Gott, ist das viel. Gut daß ihr das rettet👍
how do you find out when they put the stuff in dumpster
+Cindia Hudson go often and you will get stuff before trash day that's what we do !!!
Great Speaker!
this is where I'll go if I'm homeless
Great video. These groceries should still offer it to customers and employees.
what kind of store would you even do this at?
jesus, where did you go to find all this stuff. pls share spots

Hi my name is Teresa and I would like to know if you know or we could dumpster dive in Los Angeles California
living on ssi its hard to buy when you get so little.
and increasing minimum wage without increasing ssi means your money buys even less
im off ssi soon.
I have a feeling my ssi review is going badly too. Nothing has changed. But I got a bad feeling

I love this video and you're great Guys.
your voice is soothing
Do you have to have permission to go in their dumpsters? I never done dumpster diving before !
Fascinating!
at the very least, compost the food!!! great foods for composting!!!
thanks for helping with re-using food!
we humans are so wasteful....
You got to be very caution dumpster diving because especially around food because food may be expired. I recommend household
Are we allowed to do this legally?
That depends on local ordinances and even company policies. Be prepared to be thrown off the property.
Is this illegal? I'd like to do this
When I shop I look for the perfect fruit or veg not because it is perfect but because it is more likely to last longer at home so I have less waste
Love this!
Wow someone who talks sense well said
Those foods can still eat and cooked . It really hard to work to buy for that stuffs i wish i could be there so i can have that too or i can donate that to a lot of people that in hunger specially kids
Wow. The waste is unbelievable. These guys are young, but they are doing more to stem the waste big business participates in than most of us. Plus guys this age eat like Trojans-I'm sure they will go through all those pizzas and juice in no time flat.
why is this awesome can somebody explain to me
is it legal in California?
Sort of ish. I'm on the east coast and dumpster diving is a grey area. If a sign says no trespassing then you could be charged with that. Typically all supermarket/shops are on private property. However, I dumpster dive every other day on the east coast and we haven't been stopped for it. Cops probably aren't going to care but if someone does call in and say you look suspicious they might have to remove you and if the owner of the property calls they could press charges but they probably won't. I have yet to venture to small business trash as I feel that they might be more apt to press charges. I stick with the big box chains. We were asked to leave at a strip mall last week but it was by security it wasn't a big deal we just left and probably won't go back.
thanks for replying.
or the Pizzas are Inferno Pizzas loaded with hot peppers and no one wants em , lol i found a bunch of those once , not bad if ya bother to take out the hot peppers
I'm gonna try dumpster diving at my local aldi and Iceland lmao
there's aldi's in Iceland😂!?!?
I don't see anything wrong doing dumpster diving, for me anything thrown inside a dumpster is free stuff for everybody who wants it recovered. I happen to pass by a Dunkin Donut one night, and they thrown bags of Bagels and boxes of donuts. I picked some of it, ate it and gave some to my friends in the Church. I'm still alive today luckily!
First time watch your channel
My friend got kicked out of the store dumpster.
my turtles would LOVE that lettuce, and save me $$$$$$
Once found 1.5 kilos of perfectly edible chicken, four litres of milk and 800 grams of vacuum-packaged pork + some edible, a bit bumped veggies.
Might solve
1.) Make more jobs because the U.S. would save money on food and other products.
2.) Feed mpre of the population.
Anyone ever think of that?!?
100,000 pounds are thrown out a year in the U.S
Are you sure all of that food is clean
If you make a grocery list & stick to it, there won't be any waste, unless you change your eating habits.
