His strategy was always this how to divert the attention of viewers on the beauty of sets and heroines so that script, dialogue and acting could be average. But in a lengthy show like webseries he got exposed
But acting was great! Better than Gangubai and Padmavat

I don't think he had done it intentionally as a tactic to cover up his limitations in the story. He might have worked over his script very well in his own right, but some viewers are finding it 'lacking in storyline' while others are just fine with it! Its a matter of the differences in perception of various minds!
Alamzeb ji ke expression were same for all scenes .Kuch to expression de deti ji.....
You know the show was great although slow till 4-5 episodes. I would be more interested in Manisha Koirala vs Sonakshi sinha battle rather than fight against British.
But that part made us aware of the sacrifices of Tawaifs in India's freedom struggle. Most of us didn't think Tawaifs had any role in the battle for independence before watching this series!

Tawaif is a complex character- she's an entertainer, a poetess, a dancer, a singer, a fashionist, an astute lady, a partner, a friend, a prudent advisor, a teacher of manners, a feminist, a social reformer, a manipulative vamp, a mistress and as we've seen a rebellious freedom fighter! So a character with such varied shades require a diverse plot, maybe that's a reason the plot is so full of other details!
Better to watch the different reviews of heeramandi rather than the actual movie, so entertaining and full of witty humour.

Some of them are criticising Heeramandi out of proportion. But thankfully some others are giving a pretty balance criticism as well.
The series is overall good, but its not advisable to see it in one stretch. Can be seen 2 episodes a day. Its a visual masterpiece though.

I am from Lahore, been there many times for food. The khotas were pretty but not very big. Even the heritage hawali is not that big.. and not that extra tbh
Kotha was not used for Prosti_ution in the hay days. It was like the modern day cultural center for ethics, values & teaching manners. having said that it was mainly dependent on the rulers who perceived it & yes during dark times Kotha was also used for paranormal activities as well ( pun intended)!

SLB's creation is amazing but it spoiled because of bad performance of Sharmin
I read an article saying only the first episode of heeramandi is directed by SLB, but now that article has been deleted. Maybe it was affecting USP of the show.
Right,even I read somewhere that the rest of the episodes were directed by assistant directors under hi guidance, they went overboard and failed to make it crisp

Its a good series overall. Its trending on 1st spot on Netflix since a week now & is topping the chart in other countries too and it achieved 7/10 on IMDb. Seems like a good performance!
Completely agreed with you i also forwarded that love story and yes nothing was connected small plots were there with loose ends. Also acting theatre wali thi!

Under which all regions under British rule were hallucinated as one ancient Bharat that never existed. lol. I liked the part of freedom struggle though. It highlights the contribution of Tawaifs in the India's struggle of independence, generally we remain so oblivious & unaware of their sacrifices. I feel its a good series overall!
I think people in India are finding it boring because it is repetitive at this point - we have seen this expression from SLB many times before. We have seen the narrative as well (Gangu Bai) and we have seen the sets and symmetry. This show would not have been “boring” had we not already been familiar with his work. It is well put together and executed, I think, as it has many layered characters and interesting interweaves. Some performances fell short - but some shone bright too (Manisha, Sonakshi) while everyone who wore contacts had this glazed, far away, vacant look that SLB seems obsessed with (he told Deepika once he hired her because she had this look in her eyes when they met - she had a cold then).
Even if we were not used to the grandeur could we have gotten used to the slow pace? GoT episodes used to be an hour more. Never had I said that “kya hi dekh rahe hain”! This show could have been a movie - then I may not have found it boring due to the run time and not cared about the script with the grandeur making up for the lack of story. 8 ghante dungi toh kuch toh Acha hona chahiye. I could not watch past episode 3.
First difference is gangu bai was not a tawaif but a prostitute..
As per these history tawaif were also good in singing classical dancing expressions poetry etc.. these were completely vanished after independence because they were dependent on nawabs and big zamindars only and they were banned after independence.and were converted into red light area... If u remember devdas movie.. chandramukhi was a tawaif and her haveli etc
@@sadafrafiq5006 I appreciate your opinion in this regard. And you quite correctly pointed out that in Gangubai it was a Veshya while here its a Tawaif. There's a world difference between these two! Additionally, Gangubai was based on Social Reform while Heeramandi is about Indian Freedom Struggle. That's quite different!
Tawaifs were primarily the entertainers (like Geisha of Japan). Trained in Hindustani Classical music, Kathak dance & Urdu poetry. They were known for their manners, children from elite families used to learn adab from them. Their relationships were as per their choices & preferences. Unfortunately, it all changed during British Raaj. Some people are working to preserve the songs & dances of Tawaifs in India (like Guru Manjari Chaturvedi).
I liked it very much, but some people are finding it boring mainly becoz of the slow pace (which gets faster in later episodes) not becoz we've seen a "similar" topic earlier.
Gangubai was a different character altogether. It was based on a Veshya & Social Reform while Heeramandi is about Tawaif & Indian Freedom Struggle. These two are not even superficially similar.
@@ArSh4infinity Yeah, maybe, but most importantly this series brought up a topic which most of us were totally unaware of- Tawaif's contribution in the Indian Freedom Movement. That's a huge point in favour of this series!

I totally disagree with you. Watched it today. I can say sometimes it feels that episode is slow but not that much ki neend aa jaye. It's a one time watch with a good story in properly connected episodes. Acting of every single actor and actress(except Shermin) is remarkable. Romance, history, hate, etc were in proper proportion. :)
I cant comment on series because i couldn't even complete episode 1. But subject line for a 200 crore show should have been different which appeals to family audience of India. I think SLB chose this subject just to showcase his skills of interiors and costumes

I didnt like Sanjay's neice Sharmin acting worst. Aditi rao is amazing actress, but her lipsing on songs were not good. All actors are good .Most are Jealous as India can make such lavish series..Manisha was very good not just thik thak. The show was real beauty and well shot.

I actually liked it, especially Satto-Phatto, Qudsia, Saima and Cartwright. They carried the show in addition to Sonakshi Sinha. Manisha Koirala too was good.

Every Bhansali effort is over the top and never reflects historical accuracy. Bajirao, others same story. Glamour overrides all else
Yeah, but his cinematic liberty gave us some of the most memorable songs like Dola Re & Pinga.
He made Lahore look like Lucknow in this series, since neither this kind of culture nor Urdu language had been native to Lahore, it was more like traditional Delhi or Lucknow. That made it look beautiful but historically incorrect!
But the series was overall good, touching a rarely discussed topic of Tawaif's contribution in India's freedom struggle.

I agree with you. The young heroine whose love story is shown, she has done very bad acting. their plot as very dragged. I fast forwarded their many scenes and somehow finished the series and felt no emotions for it.

Yaar auccha to tha webseries itna negative kyo bola ja rha , mana ki story thodi aur aucchi ho sakti thi , and alamzeb ke character k liye kisi aur ko lena chahiye tha but series itni buri nhi h over all kaafi auccha gaane bhi kaafi auccche h actresses me acting bhi aucchi ki h. Rahi baat length ki to har series ek baar me hi dekh liya jaye tabhi thode hi series aucchi kehlati h isme itni khubsurti h ki ise 3 se 4 din me hi dekhna chahiye. I think bhansali ji ko sare episode ek saath nhi upload karna chahiye tha. Personally mujhe to ye series aucchi lagi❤

cant relate i was hooked maybe not all very realistic rep of the twaifs and lahore in 1940s but i dont expect hardcore realism from mr. Bhansali i do except to make his work feels like dream with at int of melodrama and he served with that and most importantly after watching i m now more intrigue in ghazal and shariya like he always makes us aware of the beauty of our own traditional art form and may he keep doing so
