I remember reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and this quote about balance of both free will and Fate/Destiny really resonated with me and it's very relevant to this discussion, here it is:
“Destiny, I feel is also a relationship-a play between grace and willful self-effort. Half of it you have no control over, half of it is absolutely in your hands and your actions will show measurable consequences. Man is neither entirely a puppet of the gods, nor is he entirely the captain of his own destiny; he’s a little of both. We gallop through our lives like circus performers balancing on two speeding side-by-side horses-one foot is on the horse called “fate” the other on the horse called “free will”. And the question you have to ask everyday is, Which horse is which? Which horse do I need to stop worrying about because it’s not under my control, and which do I need to steer with concentrated effort?”

*I used to strongly believe in Free Will and I found it super and empowering at one point in my life but now that I am past that phase* , I have found freedom in completely relinquishing the illusion that I have any little table at all. We are being lived by life all the time. We are being breathed. We are being given thoughts and desires and the impetus to think or feel certain me which browser option. So, can you ask if you have any free wheel? We are given all the inspiration and energy to do whatever it is that we do, and we only think you chose to do them but where did that thought energy come from? It couldn't have been generated from ourselves. Desires aren't self-generated. They come from beyond us.

I come from a background in ecology and paleontology (paleoecology, if anyone cares lol) and I often find myself walking a fine line between the two. I find the sheer luck of life coming into existence on Earth (in all of its incredible complexity from the biomolecular, all the way up to the biosphere), and the seeming meaninglessness of it all beautiful in itself. The idea that life was a happy accident with no predetermined future that "found a way" four billion years ago, and persisted through all of the insane changes and phases of our planets history, leading to us and the world around us, somehow gives life a sense meaning to me. However, in my personal life, I often find a lot of solace in the idea of destiny, or "things happening for a reason" and ultimately guiding/aligning me towards some kind of fate. So I guess my answer to this question is just that grunt noise Tim Allen makes on Home Improvement. Also, the idea of "cellular destiny" is fascinating and sounds kind of adjacent to epigenetics.

I can very much relate to having spiritual/serendipitous moments that make you feel connected to something bigger and I actually feel like i’m having one right now because I just went through a very life changing experience that has brought me closer to my spiritual side and has me questioning a lot of things. The day after said event happened, I opened up youtube and one of my favorite channels posted a video on intuition. Then the day after that (today), I open up youtube and saw that you just posted this. Someone’s dropping resources out here for me 😂

Congrats on the big life change! I'm feeling the same, it's a nice change from how I used to live. What was the video and channel on intuition you mentioned? That sounds like something that would help me on my journey 🙂

In the book by hypno-psychiatrist Dr. Michael Newton based off his studies of past life regression he explains that through his findings that people choose the life they will live before they incarnate and in that they choose the lessons they will learn. As you live your life you have a general direction you live but you may not end up following it or learning the lessons you chose before incarnating. And that you have soul contracts with people where you learns lessons without each other or just provide each other love or support. He also talks about soul mates - or otherwise a partner that you reincarnate with over different life times. So in a way there is both destiny and free will. You have the free will to choose the life you want - and you have the free will to live the destiny that you choose (or you choose to not follow your destiny). I could go on for hours about his books. They are so interesting and has turned into my own spiritual religion of a sort.

Kalyn's a psychic cz I was literally thinking about this rn, where should you just let it all go and go with the flow cz id it's destiny, nothing can stop it or do the decisions you make actually make as big of a difference as we think in the end

Oooooh I love this! My take on it (before watching) is that I believe in both existing and influencing us at the same time. I think some things happen to us (for us) as our destiny, our predetermined lessons, soul family (bffs), certain illnesses, traumas - there are certain things that happen in our lives that no matter what we do, we will still experience them because it was a part of our soul contract before incarnating AND you have a free will to choose what timeline you will take to get there (to the finish line) - you can make it better or worse for yourself. So basically this paradox that some things are a part of your destiny and others the part of the free will.
    6:07 I believe you , it’s a thing.

I studied philosophy so found this really interesting. I don't fully understand how having free will makes life meaningless though? What you said about kindness etc is what gibes life meaning. It's the way we use our free will in my opinion that teach us how to evolve and our souls capabilities and seeing the privilege we may have compared to others and wanting to help others. Perhaps those having less life chances gives more pre determinism to others life in a certain sense but in my opinion to break old patterns, generational sounds and over come hardships in this existence does come down to recognising and using our own free will but I feel we all have unique gifts and part of our growth or path is it using our own light and gifts to help embrace others so there is a lovely symbiosis of both...

I think we can somewhat choose our destiny, like there are different roles we have the option to fulfill and our choices let us steer which direction we go.

I'm thinking that everyone will believe what they will, myself included, but despite not believing the same as someone else...we should still agree to disagree. So, this conversation is a very good one. If someone believes what I don't or I believe what they don’t, it doesn’t truly matter unless we discover which is true. We as people aren't sure who has the right answer because we haven't reached an overall conclusion. Sorry to get philosophical about it unintentionally but I hope it makes sense.

I like to think about free will when it comes to the future, and destiny when it comes to the past. I believe “whatever’s meant to be will be” in some instances and simultaneously in the choice to live how you want. I think we live how we want mostly but that the universe guides us toward people, places, and opportunities. The guidances leads us to desires too. So I guess I also think it’s both !

Well let me use this for example. If you know your future, and you know that certain event will take place no matter what. It doesn't exclude free will. It means you made those decisions for a reason, it was your free will to make those decisions. Sure you could do something which deviates from that path, but the choice was made off who you are, the path was set because of who you are. Predetermined events aren't truly predetermined by its core.

I feel that there is a possibility that an individual can have ✨Multiple Destinies✨ and it's on the basis of his free will (his choices) that he ends up with a certain kind of life. So with every action or inaction you choose to have or not have a certain destiny.

I don't think these are mutually exclusive things. I believe that all of these thing work together. I think that Free will isn't absolute, but is limited by the choices you have made before. Fate is when the decision(s) you have made lead you to one outcome. Destiny is when the decisions of others cause a certain outcome to happen to you. It can vary in a lot of ways and most of the time is not set in stone. These are complex things that work together to create the reality we experience.

Not to turn the convo dark haha but for me personally, (and we all have our very own unique experiences and opinions), you would be hard-pressed to find me agreeing that “everything happens for a reason.
I’ve suffered so much trauma, the first major event being sexually abused by a much older brother as a young child. I’ve spent the last 20 or so years trying to heal from this and find meaning in it. My life is good now, im in a much better place. But I can’t find anything except pain and fear in experiences like those. I haven’t “learned an important lesson” from it. I’ve been in survival mode for most of my life because of it.
I totally respect anyone who believes in destiny too! I just can’t believe that me as a 9 year old girl was ~meant- to be sexually abused by a family member. Where’s the special/spiritual meaning in that? 😭
Totally open to hearing different points if view on this too, especially from others who may have had similar experience.
Love you so much Kalyn, thank you for bringing these convos to the table! Coffee talk listener for life 🥰

Exactly! I say the same thing. I knew my son before being a mom. I feel like our free will is the destiny. On the other hand I keep asking myself why there are tragedies. If there is any Power ( God etc. ) why do we have to suffer with tragedies such as earthquakes etc? Just why?

I already gave my opinion on this when you asked in the community section, so this is just a question. When you say you knew from a young age that you were destined to be a mum, did you ever question it? Did you ever wonder if you thought/felt that way because you grew up female? I'm not saying you're wrong (clearly you're meant to be a mum, you have a child) just that being female it's expected from an early age that we'll have babies, and I thought I was destined for that too until I took some time to actually think about it, and found that it's not for me. Would love your thoughts on this

I think the “life is meaningless” framed as a thought that is good to have is a bit dangerous.. I think it’s subconsciously having zero accountability for anything and not having to be responsible for things you do.
